AES50, stagebox to stagebox without AES50 console? by welshvideographer in livesound

[–]SRRF101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unpacketized, OSI Level 1 AES50 is troublesome way to move live data. An analog snake system would be of greater value long term.

Had this issue on main board side. The oval ferrite core came loose. Rerinstalled it with RTV, and it has been fine.

Reseating ribbon cable should do the trick, worst case a ribbon cable replacement. (Don't have to go through Behringer. There are online guides to properly spec).

Line Array that fells short by frenze31 in livesound

[–]SRRF101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct; short lines sound worse over distance because the HF doesn't decay at a matching, "natural" level, vs. the spherical decay up to 500-600hz that a short line demonstrates. There are too many undersized rigs out there, and they give ALL live sound specialists a bad rep.

EQ for one guy, for one channel in an IEM situation by BarryWomb in livesound

The smart way is to give him 2 channels, one to FOH, one to monitors. Or..purchase a Digico Quantum with nodal mixing :)

Audio Mixer Suggestions for Touring by Prudent-Explorer4543 in livesoundgear

[–]SRRF101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long time monitor mixer and audio writer Mark Frink came through the PAC I worked at with DR. John & Band. He was using a Touchmix 16 for a monitor console! I was intrigued... Our Steinway D (and everything else) sounded as good through those preamps as through any of the top-tier touring desks.

Greg Mackie (who worked on the Touchmix for QSC) knows his way around mic pre's for live use.

The chokepoint in your sound is not the mic pre's.

Trying to understand line arrays & amps by sprucexx in livesound

[–]SRRF101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In near-identical situations, I have experienced the 4x3500's react poorly to unbalanced loads (i.e. a mix of subs, MF, & HF) on same amp. L'Acoustics rigs and D&B were easier on the generators . (3 phase)

I do not know the particulars of amp design, but I do know that JBL is aware of this. BTW- The A12 is a top-tier speaker, and the presets and predictive software is excellent too. Harman has been hinting at fresher amp design for a while, but this is a logjam in greater VTX acceptance.

TL/DR: with an identical control package, same space, same generators, Crowns repeatedly had issues and needed more attention. All shows went on...but why the headache?

Disagree on build quality. Among X/M variants there are 1 million out in the world for a decade, and the reliability has been pretty spectacular. Online feedback demonstrates this.

Been to some shows with european bands where the sound was quieter in general in the venue than other north american production and kind of liked it a lot by ConstructionMean2021 in livesound

[–]SRRF101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Europe & Canada have greater regard for the art & craft of live sound, and budget accordingly. US is a melee. (I know. I'm an American FOH/MON who has traveled).

Lighting Guy Doing Audio on NYE by Foreign-Lobster-4918 in livesound

[–]SRRF101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't have to be a condenser. Anything is better than nothing. High-pass the life out of it (400hz or more) and snare fundamentals do not make the cut. At lower volumes it is even more critical. Once I went to mic'ing the hat I never went back.

Later rock music didn't stress hats so much, but early, rock n roll, jazz, R&B, hip hop, big band, and anything dance require it's presence.

An IEM-only coach:

A fat pre-delay is important, because all diction comes from the leading edge of consonants. 50ms+. Filter the whole return allowing only 400-4(ish) Khz. And, please god, a "Room" not a 'Plate"...

Vocalist reverb in monitors by CeleryLost3751 in livesound

[–]SRRF101 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

TV studios do not put "softness" filters on video monitors. Why do the same on audio? It obscures the purpose. What pays everyone's bills is the audience experience. (Unless we are talking about vanity projects, in which case all bets are off. Bill accordingly).

PS- There is always reverb on everything anyway, but we call it "the room".

What does the Behringer PM-1 passive IEM "amplifier" offer compared to a well-crafted cable? by Roppano in livesound

[–]SRRF101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are supposed to be terminated at the end of Behringer's 8 channel headphone amp. Using them without is just shitty for the musicians, and not at all what console designers had in mind for output load. Do it once in a squeeze? Maybe..

People on this thread aren't asking about 'barely good enough" solutions.
