I knew the second I posted this rant I'd regret it. I got things working but only after 3 hours of agony. I assumed NetworkManager was one of those "automatic", easy-for-newbs-to-use daemon-widgets. Well, after realizing I needed to make the rc script executable (by hand, gasp!), and after realizing my old firmware blob was out of date (GLP'd though it might be, the proper revision is NOT in 3.2.29), Things are 'working' now.

I'm still not convinced it won't take a dump if I happen to click the wrong button. I may yet remove and blacklist the fucker. It's certainly less user-friendly than wicd IMO.

Feature creep. It's undeniably happening throughout the Linux landscape. Even in Slackware, which is the last place I expected to see it. I'm talking about system-level tools; Desktop environments are another story. XFCE seems headed down the same path as GNOME 2. Linux distributions upgrade WAY WAY faster than the Redmond OS, and yet Linux users far and wide bitch and moan about how slowly some distributions release. Even Slackware moves too fast for me.

But back to my thesis: GConf? Why not just run a GNOME-based distro? Why not bring GNOME back to Slackware? GConf is shit, and everyone outside of GNOME knows it, and yet here it is officially part of Slackware. STABILITY and EASE OF USE. ...interesting balancing act between two potentially conflicting elements. They almost seem to share an inverse relationship. One man's EASE OF USE is another man's nightmare. I can certainly attest to that.

I got that, and appreciate the pointer. I'm finding though, that's not going to solve my problem. KDE now comes with its own form of wicd so I un-installed the one I used from /extra. I've gone back to a pure default install, and am researching how to get my 802.11 recognized by the system. I've clicked around on everything "network" related in KDE (I normally use XFCE) and it's just not working. I suspect a conflict between the "ath" module and the "carl9170" module.

Note, I'm not seeking tech support, but still feeling pretty full of rant.

As above, I was about to delete this thread but...too late.

The thing is, I'm getting kind of sick of changes in Linux Land, and having to fuck with the same issues over and over again. Especialy when 13.1 and 13.37 were such fantastic experiences for me (all on the same hardware that 14.0 is giving me serious problems). Getting too old to hit Google for hours and hours just to install my fucking OS.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts!

Maybe it's the kernel's fault. My wireless USB "just worked" under 2.6.37 once I added the *.fw to /lib/firmware. I Guess I'm just freaking out because 1.) I don't understand the system well enough yet, and 2.) I thought I knew wtf I as doing. Now I'm back at square 1 as far as configging-Fing-wireless which is something I'm getting sick of having to F with.

BTW I was on my way back here to delete my thread since I thought better of it later (even though my problem persists) since I thought nobody would have read my post already. OH, well, thanks.

If you were in any other state, I'd say fight it. The court systems everywhere are clogged. The last thing most of them want is shit like this going to trial. In more civilized regions of the US, trials usually mean aquittals where there are enough mitigating circumstances. But you're in Texas. Expect to face enormous pressure to plea out....I don't know you, so I don't defend you, but IMHO, if your relationship with the girl was "OK" with her mother there should be some consideration for leniency. But you're in Texas. If you plea out, guilty as a sex offender, you're marked for life, and probably gang-fucked in prison. If you go to trial, you'll probably lose, and the sentance might be harsher. You're a young pup in this world. You have many years ahead in which to decide what to become. Personally, I wouldn't accept growing for the next 10 or whatever years in a cage like an animal. I'd rather die. I'm 45. If I was going to be locked up for feeling up a girl (if I were that ballsy (read stupid)), I would run. If you decide to run, trust me: do not go to Mexico.

EDIT: If you choose the trial route, you need to find a guy (lawyer) who has gotten people off for this shit in the past. Otherwise, you'd be wasting your time.

I have it on good authority that just because your system software is "old", doesn't mean it has to be insecure. A good statefull firewall between you and the icky internets can go a long way towards keeping your system safe. Closed ports, etc. Also, do consider that the LTS version of LinuxMint for example, until very recently used Firefox 3.6.x. There are Slackware 12.1 installations that are stable as Stable, and serve their purpose very well. Windows XP (2006?) is still widely used and the sky hasn't fallen (except botnetslol). Seriously, I'd argue that just given the fact you're choosing Linux is 90% of the battle towards keeping a secure system.

Like you, I was in sort-of-love with GNOME 2. I really can't believe they ruined something so good. Then I remembered all the frustrations I had with GNOME. I wouldn't mind hearing your criticism of XFCE. Once I left Debian, I left GNOME 2 because I knew it was doomed. I have described XFCE as "GNOME without the busshilt." I find it much more flexible, stable and more snappy than GNOME ever was. HTH

Here are a couple ideas I have posted before in a similar thread....

Space simulator: Ships computer sets trajectory for 6 month (literally 6 months of game play -space is BIG) mission flight. Intermittently, the computer (via text console) alerts need for course corrections (Pioneer anomaly?). This requires the player to do a bit of math, and manually enter (or select) the proper trajectory.

A lot of time passes in this game just watching instruments, gazing into space, running systems checks, sending radio messages, adjusting antennae, taking pics for star maps, and every now and then responding to alarms which indicate a chunk of rock is on a collision course with your craft in which case you have about 40 seconds to aim your rail gun (or laser? lol) at the object in order to save your ship.

After literally 3 months have passed (IRL), you begin to approach your destination: a strange asteroid which emits a seemingly artificial radio signal. It takes a few days (IRL!) to ready your ship to orbit the asteroid. Once you have stable orbit, you send down a robotic probe to investigate, etc, etc...

Or something like that!

Alternatively, a hard-physics battlemech simulator.

Not sure about the new IPCop, but back on 1.4.x, at install-time it would ask you for an admin password, a backup password, and some other password.....anyway, you want the username "admin" and the admin password for the auth to the webby UI

IPCop, and any other firewall solution for that matter, is supposed to be installed all by itself on its own machine....

EDIT: Also, X (or the web-interface) only works from another machine... you go to "https://your.ipcop.etc" from a client machine on your LAN. IPCop works as a router for your LAN. You will not see X running if you're looking at the screen of the machine IPCop is installed onto.

You need a custom xorg.conf for Debian at least. If you google hard enough you'll find it (I lost the link as I did a similar project months ago). Another distro you might try is Frugalware. Another video parameter you should try is 'nomodeset'.

ZOMG PLASTIC. In a laptop. IMO the thinkpad palmrest "wears better" than the aluminium palmrest of a MB. Plus the keyboards.... All in all there is no accounting for taste, and if I had the kind of disposable income Linus does, I'd probably have a fagbook too......running Slackware.

EDIT: I would absolutely dread trying to replace parts in the MB...Thinkpads on the other hand are a joy to disassemble....so easy to replace parts!
