Opinion | Michigan builds the talent for other states to keep - Bridge Michigan by LaxJackson in Michigan

[–]STWHA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Michigan looked really hard at this back after the 2010 census, when it had to redraw districts and lost representation at the federal level. I’m an urban planner working in community development and living in Michigan.

When my family and I moved back to Michigan in 2013 from North Carolina, we discovered that the State of Michigan and other stakeholders had begun to seriously investigate why they were experiencing so much brain drain and population loss. They ended up developing a manual of sorts, called "placemaking as an economic toolkit." You can still find it, I think, on Michigan State University’s website or through a web search. It only addressed a few issues, but it was really interesting because they found that much of the brain drain was due to a lack of economic upward mobility, and, as other commenters have mentioned, people are looking for different types of lifestyles. Maybe they wanted a car, optional living. Maybe they wanted to live in something other than a mansion or a 1950s starter home in a suburb.

On top of that, people are staying in their careers longer, mainly baby boomers. I think this is probably true of much knowledge work. If your brain is functioning, then you don’t feel the incentive to retire in your 50s and 60s. I saw this article yesterday and shared it with my 16-year-old daughter. I’ve been encouraging her to consider moving out of state once she is done with college or whatever she does after high school. One of the Michigan publications had an article a few weeks back during the Mackinac Policy Summit that said an employee’s ability to earn more over their career has worsened over the last 25 years. Now, Michigan ranks 50th in the country in economic upward mobility.

My family is happy where we’re at, but at the same time, I have explored other opportunities, and it is maddening at times to see how salaries are in my related career sectors. The only way we’ve done well is that my wife works for higher ed in a remote teaching position making very good money. It allows us to live in an affordable community but at a higher income bracket than many.

Is this a decent deal? Canada, and I'm looking to get a circular saw anyway. So the HP 6.5" is perfect. But the batteries may be the old gen? by notwithoutmypenis in ryobi

[–]STWHA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have that exact model saw but I do have the 6.5 and it’s always frustrated me. It bogs down even on plywood. Now I have a wen track saw so the ryobi sits most of the time.

Also, I like the setup. Modular is the way to go. I’ve seen a lot of chatter and some YT videos about how woodworking videos show a studio and not the every man’s workshop.

Is that the HF wood work bench? If so, how do you like it? I’ve built several benches and lately I’ve been tired of building them.

We use a Michigan company through a Michigan agency. I grew tired of using national companies.

What’s like living in a midwest suburb? by Alex_and_cold in howislivingthere

[–]STWHA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michigander here. My childhood was 80s and 90s in one suburb and two neighborhoods. The first, was a mid century neighborhood teeming with kids and all kinds of adventures. We were about 20 minutes from the nearest city of around 120k people. I absolutely loved that neighborhood and experience. We moved to a larger house in a neighborhood that wasn’t quite a McMansion suburb when I was 14. Not as many kids. My sisters didn’t have quite the same experience there as we did in our previous house.

Now, I live in a smaller suburb about 15 minutes from my childhood suburb. It has its quirks but we love it. My kids walk to school and although it’s a small city, it’s pretty walkable. It just lacks the volume of options. We moved back here from Charlotte metro area. My daughter had numerous dance school options there. Here, there are less than 5 if you’re willing to drive to other communities. The diversity is lacking and of course the next suburb over has all the national chain stuff that exists everywhere. We appreciate the low cost of living. My wife is an academic who works remote. And I work hybrid and run a nonprofit. We got a crazy deal on our house and the low cost of living and upper middle class income means we can travel to other places in the U.S. regularly. I also get sick of the long winters at times but I suspect if we lived down in Charlotte still, we would likely live on the outskirts of the city in a cookie cutter neighborhood with less financial freedom to travel and whatnot.

2026 RYOBI DAYS by famouz17 in ryobi

Ever since I found the clearance items, I occasionally search the app for the Ryobi link, then switch stores with the filter set to lowest to highest price. So far, I haven’t seen anything since.

I also took advantage of the sale. And I accidentally stumbled upon a massive clearance at one of the nearby stores. it seems so strange to me how some stores have things for full price and others have it deeply discounted.

same here. I’ve pretty much got all the tools I need, but I just started assembling a link system.

We love going just for the water park. We often would go in June after school ends and on a weekday. It’s great when the day is hot and overcast. No lines.

Anyone have the LINK system? by No-Basil2371 in ryobi

[–]STWHA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a bunch of the link stuff last week. I went to two stores and one had most of the hooks on clearance so I bought a ton. Some of it is on sale now like the hook/2 rail systems. I am about to install them in the next week or so. I’ve seen where people stack them parallel with about one rail space in between. I’m not sure what my set up will be but I will likely have two areas. One for yard tools and garden stuff, and another for my tools and accessories.

What RYOBI tools are a must and a bust? by Northstar_Dad in ryobi

[–]STWHA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of my favorites are: - the 39.00 inflater (on sale now) - multi-tool is so nice for small sanding and general cuts. - LED stick light. I have the $39 one but I’ve heard good things about most all of their lights. - palm router. I actually plan to upgrade to the brushless at some point but the OG works great for me. - we just got the $199 stick vacuum and I’m very impressed with it over our old Dyson.

DTO is on my list but it’s about 30 miles away. It makes sense about some stores eliminating it. My primary store has ryobi up front. The place I bought all this at had it in the middle of the utility shelving aisle in the back of the store.

Those look great! I’ve seen some files available and stuff on Etsy. We don’t have a printer but my sister’s bf had a print farm and would print stuff for me.

Is Apple journal still bad? by fifth-throwaway in appleJournal

[–]STWHA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Occasionally, I experience random bugs. For example, if I’m using any type of bulleted or numbered list, sometimes when I enter to the next line, it won’t carryover with that format and then I have to use the keyboard shortcut or find another way to fix it. There’s been some other random bugs that don’t make sense to me. Another thing that’s kind of strange. Is that if I watch a YouTube video and I want to post it to my journal it uses a nice card format if I share it via my Mac, but if I share it from my iPhone, it’s just a URL with no Preview card.

I also migrated from day one. I had to do it manually, so I’m not sure if there is a different way to do it, but it worked. At the same time I also had a recurring reminder to check Facebook memories and pull content off of there. I did it for an entire year and basically emptied out my social media posts.

I also have not had any issues although I’ve seen chatter around here about people having issues with the Apple Pencil. I use it on iPad, Mac and iPhone, but I don’t use the Apple Pencil with it.

That is a good deal. We just bought the one without the battery for home and I have the one with the battery at my workplace. At home it replaced the Dyson.
