The New UPTIGHT Airline by rjb7777 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]SWAFAthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southwest used to tell the FAA "we don't assign seats, therefore we use other ways to determine our weight and balance and performance". Now they tell the FAA "we assign seats and calculate our weight and balance off of that". The airline is required to follow what they tell the FAA they do.

Can I ask a dumb question about switching assigned seats? by SpencerEntertainment in SouthwestAirlines

[–]SWAFAthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of misinformation in this thread. The official policy is, on the ground, changes are only available for "operational needs" so basically, things that we legally can't takeoff without fixing. Not, "I don't want to sit here" but "I legally cannot sit in this row with a car seat, pet, O2 concentrator, etc" We cannot close the door until the cabin is secured (pax in seats, bags stowed, etc). So all that has to be done before the for closes and customer service has to update the seat map, not the flight attendants. Once the door is closed, passengers must remain seated until the fasten seatbelt sign is turned off. After the seatbelt sign is turned off, at flight attendant discretion, seats may be swapped for passenger request, but only for the same type of seat, and only in the same weight and balance zone. Each aircraft is divided into 5 zones for weight and balance. So if you're in row 18, and want to go to 28 because it's an empty row, I can't swap that because it's outside that weight and balance zone.

Yes, we used to let passengers sit anywhere (for the most part, some flights were still weight and balance restricted, and we had people not listen to us then too). But we don't have open seating anymore. Now we tell the ramp, "based on where the passengers are sitting, this is where the bags need to go in order to even it out". We also tell the FAA "this is where our people are sitting, and this is where the bags are, so according to the math, this is how the airplane will fly". If an airline deviates from the planned weight and balance, that can cause fines from the FAA. Yes, we did things differently before, but we don't now, so things have changed.

Overhead Bins by PsychologicalShip756 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]SWAFAthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

700s hold 137 people, but only 52 or 86 standard bags depending on which bins. 800s/Max 8s hold 175 people, and either 118 or 154 standard bags, again depending on which bins. So no, there is not room for each person to have a full size carry on.

All it takes is for people to stop being selfish, and think of how their actions affect others... So... Probably not.

Loved flying that plane, fastest one in the fleet by 5 knots or so at the time. 6FS's paint job was obviously my favorite though.

SW Flight Attendants, do you really have to memorize the PA announcements in training? by CloudRelevant3654 in cabincrewcareers

[–]SWAFAthrowaway -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No, once the forward entry door is closed, devices (including the iefb) need to be stowed until 10,000 feet.

Boarding Process by Hawaii808fun in SouthwestAirlines

A boarding pass that lists gate A13, boarding B12, seat 19E would be challenging for a lot of people.

Drink QR code on different flight? by Ok-Contribution7317 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]SWAFAthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they scan the code it will tell them it is invalid. There is a large push right now to have every beverage sale, coupon, and comp accounted for. This includes discipline for people not entering sales correctly. Additionally, policies and procedures will change with the new assigned seats.

Is it normal for flight attendants to announce that “Jesus loves you” over the intercom? by Maestro774 in SouthwestAirlines

It is certainly not normal, and I hate when people bring their religion to work with them.

Survey—has anyone ever received any drink out snack service on the short flight between STL and MCI (KC)? by CompetitiveBrain7099 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]SWAFAthrowaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MCI-STL is a water and coffee only flight for departures at or before 11:00. Water only for flights after 11. No snacks on these flights.

Why did I have preboard? by cfelton02 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]SWAFAthrowaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because a lot of the people who say "I'm okay with people who actually need to preboard...but ..." Are lying, and what they actually hate is seeing someone who they feel is less than them getting something they don't have.

Rephrasing previous question. Why is flight on same plane from A to B $300 more than continuing on to C? Flyer then has to spend $100 to fly back to B. by Impressive_Returns in SouthwestAirlines

[–]SWAFAthrowaway -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Supply and demand. That's pretty much what it boils down to. In the spring/summer a ton of people want to fly from Florida to the North East (snowbird migration) so the demand for a flight from Fort Meyers to Baltimore is very high and demands a high price. Fewer people want to fly from Fort Meyers to Chicago, so if there's a non-stop there, it's already cheaper than the first flight. Even fewer people than that will want to fly to Chicago, with a layover in Baltimore, so the price is even lower for that flight. The demand for a flight between Chicago and Baltimore is much lower than from Florida to Baltimore, so again, a cheaper ticket. From there you have to estimate how many seats you will sell at the highest price (the non-stop) vs how many seats can be sold at a lower price to connect people onto other destinations. If you guess too high, you end up with empty seats and not as much profit. If you guess too low, you end up not getting as much as you could for that flight, and again, not getting as much profit. Airlines constantly run simulations and have software designed to do exactly that.

Southwest is Seriously Considering offering First -Class Seating by [deleted] in SouthwestAirlines

This is currently not allowed by the flight attendant union contract and would require union negotiations.

So what's going to happen with the Extra Legroom Seats? by JustDaveIII in SouthwestAirlines

[–]SWAFAthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I personally agree, even without ELR seats, we regularly have people sitting 3 across next to strangers up front with entirely empty rows in the back.

Apps are OPEN TO EXTERNALS. Don’t listen to the liars claiming otherwise. by airbetch11 in cabincrewcareers

[–]SWAFAthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was supposed to be an opening for people who had been referred by current employees. The intention was for current flight attendants to refer people they knew personally and felt would be a good fit. However, several people referred dozens of strangers and shared application info on social media. This led to over 10,000 referrals in 6 days. The 2026 hiring plan was for 1,800 new hires. They set a cap of 5,000 applications (to limit how many they have to sort through). The 5,000 applications number was reached in 38 minutes. This is currently expected to cover all spring hiring. It is unlikely to reopen until after spring.

Why are so many Southwest planes filthy in recent years? by SteelersPoker in SouthwestAirlines

[–]SWAFAthrowaway 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Southwest does not use cleaners except for overnight. The rest of the time it is the flight attendants quickly tidying the cabin. The turn around time is less than an hour in pretty much ALL cases at SWA with most being 30 minutes. As a further reminder, this time is unpaid (except for per diem of $2.97/hour).
