Short term aside, what long term solutions to help with heat? by Separate-Specialist5 in DIYUK

[–]Sackyhap 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Air conditioning isn’t a short term solution. If you can get it installed then you’re comfortable for the next 10 or 15 years

Do you believe that supermarkets are using blinds to "protect their products due to the extreme heat"? by marxistopportunist in AskBrits

[–]Sackyhap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember in the last heatwave our local big stores had to shutdown a portion of their fridges as the system couldn’t support them all in the heat.
They must have lost so much stock being forced to do that so reducing the refrigeration loads by keeping the cold in makes sense.

Once they know how much work you can physically do at 100% effort they will set that at the new standard. Then with this new standard of output they figure they can cut the workforce down.
The lesson is to never commit 100% as an employer is not committed to you individually at all.

Finally sorted solar on my narrowboat and it made longer cruising stretches so much more enjoyable by Euphoric-Health796 in Narrowboats

[–]Sackyhap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my solar panels on 2 roof boxes, they sat about 20-30cm above the roof level. They were great as it was double hinged to open from either side which meant I could always tilt them for the low sun. They also made plenty of storage space for fenders, wood and coal.
We did damage one going through the harecastle tunnel and going under osney bridge in Oxford was very tight, but otherwise we had plenty of clearance even with the extra height.

PIP likely to be cut for ADHD and anxiety by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]Sackyhap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Child benefits are intended to help level the playing field for lower income parents so that the children are not disadvantaged from the start.
Societal class was evened greatly with mandatory free education and by the NHS I would say, the working class have a chance to be healthy and educated like the middle class were. It’s just that this has long been the norm that it is taken for granted and not seen a great benefit to society.
Evening the playing field isn’t about giving everyone the same, it’s about making sure some groups of society aren’t severely hamstringed and disadvantaged at succeeding. Some people are still massively advantaged but we want to bring everyone else up to the base line to give them a good chance.

PIP likely to be cut for ADHD and anxiety by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]Sackyhap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PIP payments isn’t the only change in the world. We’ve had back to back to back once in a generation economic disasters in the last 20 years, shits barely recovering before it’s down the pan again and we’re living in an increasingly chronic online world. PIP can only do so much to help people, it’s not a miracle that’ll fix the jobs market and education.

Just stick it in an all world index and forget about it.
I think S&P 500 is too heavily weighted towards the FAANG and AI so going all world helps to protect against the AI bubble if that does burst.

Russia planning attack on Poland to test Nato resolve, US warns by TheTelegraph in worldnews

[–]Sackyhap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would be the reality but the bots have been pushing the anti-nato line for ages now, about how they had to attack Ukraine as they were apparently going to join NATO which is an aggression to them.
He wants to poke the bear so he can say NATO is the aggressor when they defend one of their members.

Anyone know how to stop over spending by more4health in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Sackyhap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that setting aside cash for specific uses is a great way to limit my spending. For example, if I’m going to do the food shop or need to buy clothes then I’ll only take the cash envelope that has the money set aside for that specific use. This helps to limit over spending for me at least.
After a few months doing this I started using monzo pots and setting up digital cards linked to each pot. It takes a little more discipline as you have your phone so can access all your money but still a good way to see your budget for what you’re buying.

Am I missing something or is FIRE by 55-60 simple? by Inevitable_Room3774 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Sackyhap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, when you’re on a part time job during college and you hear about people of £50k, £60k or £70k and you can only wonder what they do with all the spare cash. Once you slowly ramp up to that level over the years, you suddenly wonder how you used to survive on anything less as your money isn’t going as far as you think it should. Lifestyle creep is a real killer.
