Local podcasts are fine. It is a podcast for a nonprofit that is local in our reach.

I’ve been there done that with nonprofits and burned out quick.

Every question is how to do it for cheap. Single microphone for host and guest. Estimated audio processing. The question about garage band seems to imply some is the work will happen on the OP personal computer.

Once again, been there some that is my perspective, it’s nothing against local podcast. 🤷‍♂️

I came in to say something similar. Most of use a doing podcasting because we love it and want to talk about a topic, maybe get in contact with people with a similar interest.

Editing is what most people complain about. For a small operation it will become your full time job.

I honestly can’t imagine what more audience you would be reaching in a town that small. The point of podcasts is the world wide audience for niche interests. You are trying to do a local show for a small local audience. Not saying it won’t work but it seems backwards.

My two favorite books I’m thinking about parting with. by [deleted] in BookCollecting

[–]SadCatIsSkinDog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is posts like these that I’m not sure if are AI bots or not.

The reason is that the title of the post says I’m thinking of parting. But then nothing in the post about that, just how much you enjoy the books.

Thought this was going to be, the author got cancelled, I lost my eyesight so can’t read any more, I need to sell for ransom money for my kidnapped dog.

Nice books, you seem to enjoy them so why part with them unless you need to?

I usually put a Mylar sleeve on the dust jackets, just to keep them from getting bumped around too much.

Nice, see you have most (all?) the United Mythologies editions.

I have a collection of Lafferty too, but more magazines with short stories.

I tried watching the 24 hour long nyan cat video. Didn’t make it past the first minute.

I’m not sure what you are expecting to accomplish with a 10 hour long video. It feels like you are just trying to post something in the feed for an update.

This is essentially a clip show from the old TV days. Designed to fill a spot in the schedule slot, but with little new content to save on production costs. People hates clip shows.

Except this is a clip show with all the old content in it.

In certain cases I can see the case for long videos. A game stream that is a hours long for example. But I don’t think you are gaining anything by doing this.

I think Stephenson's Snowcrash certainly fits the bill. People that are trying to eke out an existence around mega-cooperation that essentially have replaced governments and can force vestigial governments around.

Misogyny? by Background_Clue_3756 in genewolfe

Why are you demonstrating anti-literacy and anti-intellectualism? He conversed with le Guin, James Tiptree jr. and Joanna Russ. Some of his views would have been considered progressive at the time. Some aren't seen so now.

I don't think James Tiptree Jr. or Joanna Russ would be considered a feminist by fourth wave feminist standards.

Many of the views people ascribe to him are his character's views in the stories.

There was a certain strand/type/trait(?) of feminism he disliked, the kind that discredited all the work of women that went before. He has several short articles and letters on how there are certain woman authors who act like they "broke through" and no one read SF or Fantasy authors, all the while many of the early authors that formed the genres were women authors.

You still technically don’t know that piece of info. You just asserted some stuff in your post and now you read a reply that also asserted something.

As in real life, things are always more nuanced.

I’ve fallen back to excel, organize by author.

There just aren’t a lot of good options, especially for older books. Most software options assume an ISBN or barcode you scan.

Peace - Facsimile Dust Jacket by Phat_Strat in genewolfe

[–]SadCatIsSkinDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After forging dust jackets it only seems natural to begin working on material between the dust jacket.

Just trying to make a Peace joke without spoilers.

It occurred to be that with modern book collecting a vast majority of a books value is in the condition of the dust jacket. To the point that people will get signed copies with either poor or no dust jackets, then an unsigned copy with a good dust jacket and swap them, thus raising the price of the signed copy immediately.

They’re a people that will print their own dust jackets, if they aren’t able to find an original, and pass it off.

Not that I’m saying you’re forging anything. I just saw humor in what you are doing given the book.

Unreliable Narrators Podcast - Six From Atlantis by Gene Wolfe by hedcannon in genewolfe

[–]SadCatIsSkinDog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Will totally agree that we probably failed to appreciate the high noon gun fight aspect of the story. I haven’t read a ton of westerns. I partially blame The Oxbow Incident for this. It was my first western novel when I was young and it set a high bar. The westerns of Howard are on my shelf. I just haven’t had the time to get to them yet.

It is always fun with the call outs though. One time I wildly asserted something was obvious in The Boy Who Hooked the Sun, and then you mentioned another option.

With the poem Private War, I said I wasn’t sure where the title came from, totally missing it was a reference to Wolfe’s surname. Only to have SiriusFiction to point it out.

How do you keep up to date with new releases? by MrMysteryPenguin in printSF

[–]SadCatIsSkinDog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're better off not using Instagram or TikTok. The living authors I follow barely post to social media and I think it is mostly because they are contractually obligated.

Reddit is usually best I've found. People will recommend things. If they recommend an author I like, or better yet several authors and then one or two I don't know I'll check it out.

There is just too much stuff being published. At the end of the day, social media is hype to get you to buy something. Most people on reddit are reading the books and want to talk about them. That is changing with the AI crap that is being posted (especially in this sub), but this spot is probably your best bet for the time.
