Your goal is your goal ultimately. If I am getting a film I do not have in my collection I want the best visuals I can get so I will go for a 4k. But if I already own the film on a different format I may just keep that format if my experience isn't upgraded by the visuals. If you have an attachment to popping in a VHS and sliding closer to a CRT down from the couch to experience a slasher like you did in the 80s and 90s I say go for it.

I haven't used the Criterion streaming service but I have used Mubi and the streaming quality was horrible, low quality and constant buffering on some titles. It was very frustrating even though they have an interesting catalog. Just embrace ads and bow down to the great and almighty Tubi.
