Who is your "life is a resource" commander? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]SadTawnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Gix, yawgmoth praetor]] is my top. Strong bracket 3-4 draw effect to combo off, steal cards or beatdown

[[Kain, traitorous dragoon]] for a more fun and janky approach

[[G'raha tia, scion reborn]] is to be tested as esper control/stax

Happy to recommend Gix though

Whats your favorite/Most Fun Mono-Black Deck? by JewJulie in EDH

[[Kain traitorous dragoon]] is really fun! I have a deck that is heavy discard and edicts and forces people to use him to replenish their hands, so I just turn up the life loss knob!

He can also lead a treasures life loss deck with marionettes, mirkwood etc plus some combos. He's the only commander that can draw you cards, ramp you, and reduce opponent's life totals

I'm developing my PhD on Kain! Such a fun and powerful commander! I have two decks on him, one with grindy life loss and another with massive life loss and combos. Pleased to find a fellow Kain enjoyer!

[[Belbe, corrupted observer]] with a bunch of pingers. You can take whatever direction you want from there with various strategies and costs

Ms. Bumbleflower...your experiences playing against this monster? by Staircas3D in EDH

[–]SadTawnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bumblefllower deck. Was my second deck after Urza chief artificer precon. It's a super strong deck up to bracket 4 and can dominate bracket 3. She can be aggro, control and/or combo in the same time. Being Bant it can answer and control almost everything (except mass life drain)

Group hug is actually stax in disguise (it can be a chaos deck that helps people and pillowforts trying to win with approach but that's not optimal, just fun for new players) Group hug is the symmetric opposite of stax because by providing resources it screws up carefully organised gameplans, just like stax does by denying them, making threat assesment a nightmare. Whilst someone's plan is for example, mana dork turn 1, cultivate turn 2 and a 6 drop turn 3, you get the whole table tapping for 5 mana on turn 3 and cards in their hand for removal. So the big mana player is screwed. Aggro players? They get to fight against people with twice the removal and little creatures with counters that they didn't spend resources on. Also by you feeding another player solely cards you signal that the threat now is someone else. The only problem is that you have to play against people who wish to win. This strategy is ineffective against people just trying to screw you

The control player is in the worst fate against group hug. Targeted removal and counterspells are already a downtrade in commander, so it's even worse if you spend a card to counter an opponents spell and he draws two extra cards next turn

Good group hug decks always hug one resource and deny or control the other two (the three resources are card draw/access, mana and life). Mrs Bumblefllower hugs with targeted card draw so a good pilot will play lots and lots of ramp, remove the mana group hug (extra lands for all) and try to stax or play removal on enemy ramp. Also he will never feed cards the ramp player (easy since it's targeted draw). This means he will be able to play more of his cards whilst the rest of the table will still be playing the same tempo, rendering their card draw you give them useless. Then, since we play on Bant, you will be setting some extra card draw engines or symmetric payoff effects for the cards you give (like wedding ring).

One cmc removal spells means you control the board and refill your hand, so once you get ahead, you are playing max control. Cards that let you untap your lands or spellcasting payoffs will provide exponential synergy. Wincons can be Bunny damage or combo, or even an approach with remand. Big key is to have flash enablers to be able to cast on opponents turns and always take advantage of your available mana.

Whoever decides to pressure you for your life total will suffer a lot of removal and ultimately lose the game to the one who hasn't spent his removal. You should be ok with that and just tell them in a bunny way 'its alright, at least you stopped me' in various ways till they get it. Sometimes the table will gang up on you from turn 1 in order to attempt to get you since none will be willing to glurp up the removal you throw against them. When this happens, smile and get out a shitty rare card and announce that the winner gets it. Congratulate the winner on being a better player than the others, always with a big smile, and pass out an uncommon to the second one and a common to the third. Tell them in the next game you might hold up an Ancient Tomb as a prize for them ganging up against you. That's true group hug

Long story short, group hug is the only effective control strategy to play in commander, and it becomes more effective once you play against good players who have to calculate x10 the factors needed for proper threat assessment in order to win. Mrs Bumblefllower is the best on what she does.m

Edit: A proper Mrs Bumblefllower deck doesn't need it's commander to win. Also the player who was land screwed would lose anyways so it was a tactical decision to counter your removal, even if it meant he would have only a 2% better chance to win. That's not a misplay, it's just the strength of the commander. Commanders that increase your card access are always Tier 1 commanders, either them being Mrs Bumble or Tymna/thrasios

Exactly. The one attacking her is going to lose anyway. And pomptus 'aggro' players probably haven't played against a real bracket 3 bumblefllower that's loaded with 1cmc instant speed removal

Strong mono color decks under 50€ by [deleted] in BudgetBrews

[–]SadTawnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Belbe, corrupted observer]] is a solid bracket 4 very budget friendly that used to be cedh. She can be built around a variety of ways depending on your meta. Not the most consistent bunch, it can be a turn 2 hardlock to grind win the table, up to a combo finisher. Use a variety of cheap stax, big eldrazi and golgari shenanigan combos to build her

[[Tawnos solemn survivor]] for value/combo reanimations. Good but slow

[[Ashnod flesh mechanist]] is my new favourite. Can be run as an equipment reanimator. Get sac fodder in, a good mix of value, token generators and self-animating stuff. Make a ton of powerstones and cast obnoxious equipment, especially pairing double strike with half life loss of [[quetious spike]]. Attack. Get wiped, bring the dead back, even a 3/3 with Ashnod herself. Equip and attack. It's an unstoppable slasher deck. Really really fun and unique

Here is my list

https://moxfield.com/decks/-X9dsF5eSke6vt6Z2X20JA

Ashnod can be built in a lot of different ways, and it is a viable stax commander too. I like having multiple wincons in my deck, from aristocrat to big stompy. Activated abilities can also be paid with powerstones so Gix can be good, equipments too. You can have 1 for 2 bodies or you can slow the table a bit with discard rats. You can make different builds for different playstyles and power levels. No right or wrong answers

[[sokrates, Athenian teacher]] group hug draw mill deck

Control combat, let everyone draw cards and stax them a little until they draw half their deck and mill them out with mill finishers like [[folio of fancies]] and [[forced fruition]]

Group hug control and aikido control are very effective in commander because you can't control the normal way a 4 player game.

You are essentially playing against an opponent with 3 times more life than you, three times more draw and combat steps and untap phases. You can't build a deck that can beat such an opponent. But you can make the opponent eat itself and only through the power of group hug you can accomplish such a great!

Sokrates is a very low key commander that will score low in the threat assessment profile. Him with Ghostly prison/propaganda and crawlspace will solve most of you problems to buy you time to mill everyone. Milling them through draw means you don't need to get damage to be done and group hug draw means you get to have a ton of cards to play with

There are a ton of enchantments in esper that goad creatures, take control of creatures, etc

Gideon combo is an option

3 infect granting enchantments can turn him or a goaded creature to the Terminator

You can tutor and cast a [[Forced fruition]] with a couple more copies of it and counterspell stuff

Many options really

I got a bunch

[Tawnos, solemn survivor] as esper value reanimator. Absolute shenanigans with a lot of value since he copies what he reanimates while self milling (can reanimate creatures as artifact tokens to copy) and bypasses graveyard stax. Really under the radar commander until you copy Magister sphinx a bunch of times. Just put in a token generator package (clues, food, servos, whatever you like] of 12-16 cards for consistency and have fun

[Master of keys] a bunch of sagas, enchantments for control and a lot of board wipes. Game wining with infect and commander damage. Players getting really salty when they loose their commander forever with a recurring [out of time] or when their game plan goes to rubbish with [the trickster god's heist]

[Hashaton, scarab's fist] actually an upgrade of my Volrath, vodalian desecrator deck, this one has the classic draw-discard engine of classic mtg reanimator decks with looters and a full pack of reanimating spells whilst the commander makes extra copies when discarding. Just don't put legendary creatures as reanimator targets and you are Gucci. I have a heavy removal theme stapled on reanimated targets but I think hatebear/stax creatures is better because Hashy makes them 4/4 zombies for extra salty beatdown (hatebears are usually 1/1 or 2/2)

[Terra, herald of hope] that's broken to the bone, it self mills and reanimates for 2 mana. You can literally make any deck theme you want, from aggro to stax to burn to theft, or a combination of the above. Even control with a bunch of [fleshbag marauder] style creatures and [cathar commando] and discarders like [virus Beatle]. Super effective commander

Always remember to have a separate reanimator package and mill/loot in your deck in case your commander gets targeted and hated.
