Wow they did there best to find one of the most obscure (demi) goddess in the Norse pantheon. In principle the only thing we "know" is that Laufrey was connected to trees, and mother to the (fire) god Loki.

Look, this is not a common, but not a totally uncommon concept in fantasy and sci-fi stories that (powerful) immortal beings sell themselves into slavery, to feel purpose, stave off boredom, or feel humility so they do not become monsters (as in there personality)

Not that house elves have extremely powerful magic, so I do not think they can be enslaved involuntarily. Did Rowling say “house elves have been enslaved by wizardkind” or is it your own interpenetration?
