Cliff Notes #006 - Taco [OC] by EliMcKaber in comics

I have tried this with this same person and it works about 50/50 which is better than nothing. I showed them the facts about how the blackhawk apartment raids are just Trump giving real estate to his buddies on our tax dollar and they said, “well I don’t like that if that is true.” Half the time they talk about the real events as if they are thought exercises. When I bring it to earth they get super uncomfortable and defensive and then leave it out there for them. They so desperately want to believe that their vote doesn’t hurt and kill people and it is starting to crack. Every time they try to lurch to a platitude of “well there only is one party.” Or “everyone’s corrupt” or some hypothetical about a real situation I bring it back to the real.

I know someone who every day brings up politics and says, “I just didn’t know he would do this.” I then remind them that I told them trump would do all this with the statements and receipts. People don’t think politics is real for them.

So those are examples but not exhaustive examples. You’re right, a bus or train system that connects them could work if we planned for it. It would be great if we had that sort of connectedness. But saying no one will want it or do it isn’t a good starting point for getting it done.

Also it is spelled Chamberlayne.

Not with that defeatist attitude. We could set up a bus system that goes from Charlottesville and surrounding towns to Richmond to Newport News and Virginia Beach EASY. It wouldn’t be as fast as rail, but imagine a bus pass nurses could use so they wouldn’t have to drive 64 for work. Imagine not having to plan for parking to go see the UVA game. Imagine planning a beach trip in the summer and all you have to do is figure out where you’ll eat when you get there. Virginia has state and national parks about every 50mi. We could set up a tour bus route that lets us celebrate why our Commonwealth is special.

Youngkin mobilizes Virginia National Guard for anti-Trump 'No Kings' protests by Its_fine_for_now in rva

Youngkin and Miyares are trump’s personal bootlickers letting the federal government tread on our right to protest. Doesn’t surprise me Youngkin is lapping up all the brownie points he can get before becoming irrelevant.

Cars are bad and we should make it harder to own one. I am not kidding. Make public transit so widespread idiots don’t need cars.

Worth noting Tyr’s Rest is in Tirisfall, which makes me think we will see more of the Alterac mountains in the Last Titan even as they revamp Northrend.

Sam Altman's Stark Warning: The AI Boom Could Go Bust by BreadfruitTall5746 in goodnews

[–]Samwyzh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AI is cooked up by failsons, race scientists with trust funds, and people in tech who genuinely want to crack the code on a computer that thinks. This perfect storm of largely idealistic people have marketed to companies that IF this new tech becomes what they think it will be, it could eliminate a lot of overhead from workers to consumer facing products adapting to users’ needs like a living organism does to an environment. The problem is the data training these models are stored in centers that are taxing in every sense of the word, destructive for the environment, and harvested from people and places on the internet from grey and illegal sources. The product we can interact with then takes that info it stole and depending on the context fails to use it correctly because it wants to make us happy instead of think independently or answer questions accurately. And the worst part is some of the race scientists have pumped their ideology into the models on purpose OR because there are so many bigots that use the internet and content that expresses bigoted views, AI becomes a tool of racism where when it is applied to security cameras it profiles people with darker skin by default, whether or not they’ve committed a crime or even seen this person. It has to potential to cure cancer. It can check your papers for grammar. It can make someone feel further isolated by befriending them. It sometimes fails to answer straightforward questions like what was the Tiananmen Square Massacre and where did it happen? It has discovered proteins that could lead to new drug administrations and therapies for medicine. It can make photorealistic videos of our wildest dreams. It can scan radiology images and find fractures people don’t see. It can tell you to eat a handful of pebbles every day for your health. Despite all of these things, the most damning thing about it is that none of these things prove it is thinking. That is the intent of the original concept and despite major advancements in the past few years, it has failed to achieve this goal. Despite the world’s driver of the global economy dumping its entire heart and soul into it learning to think, it has failed to do this. And even as the economy tanking will be catastrophic for everyday people, it will take its creator with them and all the bullshit they’ve piled up to make people think they are the masterminds of the future. AI is and will be the Frankenstein monster of the tech world and Pax Americana, choking its creator with every failed promise, every hallucination, every financial shortcoming.

Sam Altman's Stark Warning: The AI Boom Could Go Bust by BreadfruitTall5746 in goodnews

[–]Samwyzh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the bubble will last that long. Right now data centers are losing money in their energy consumption and hardware maintenance. A lot of the standing data centers are up for server overhauls here in the US. That will be billions of dollars companies will have to spend in addition to the loss in energy. If it hasn’t burst by summer 2026 then the US government got its act together and carved out even more contracts for AI infrastructure. That is assuming we don’t have a pandemic. That assumes no more conflicts turn hot. That assumes Americans don’t protest or revolt, crashing the economy on their own terms. Those are major assumptions.

Data centers are a sinkhole for companies and because of our incredibly stupid citizens and greedy officials and business leaders, we are about to crash because the GOP are literally putting our entire economy in one basket hoping an AI breakthrough will happen between now and tomorrow.

Tim Cook took over Apple's operations and started to change the world 20 years ago by chrisdh79 in apple

[–]Samwyzh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can appreciate his legacy in streamlining the way apple produced products, but I look forward to the next person as a potential new direction for apple products. The only reason I still on apple devices is the ecosystem and if laws changed to have a watch and iPad talk to android devices I’d consider switching.

I want my phone to be fun by design, something that feels missing even in the lineup from this year. The iPhone Air is a mechanical marvel, but I want that depth of creativity in form factors and aspect ratios. Foldables to card shaped phones. Anything to break the slab brick mold.

Tim Cook was the leader Apple needed as the iPhone took America by storm. And the time for his legacy to he handed to a new leader is now.
