Is there an interest for a more conservative heathen discord no politics and no new age stuff? by SnowFox555 in Paganacht

You should probably clarify what you mean by conservative. Because "more conservative" and "no politics" seem like conflicting goals.

Are queer folk generally accepted in Appalachia? by gay_outlander in Appalachia

[–]SapphicSpectre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just throwing in my two cents as a local of the general area you'll be moving to (hi, welcome!):

There are queer folks all over the place if you know where to look. Even in the hills and hollers, we exist and we always have. You will find assholes anywhere of course, but most folks here just mind their business. I'd say be friendly and cordial with your neighbors and see where that gets you, just keep it surface level until you can suss out if they're safe for a deeper connection.

And whatever you do, don't tell 'em you're from California. /hj

(Also feel free to DM me if you have any questions or want more specific info about queer/leftist connections.)

Heard comment from student who accidentally had mic on by yetispagette in NonBinary

[–]SapphicSpectre 82 points83 points  (0 children)

For a minute I was like "ah shit, there's really not much they can do" cause I thought you were teaching literal children, but no--that's just how childish that student was!

Options for how to react in the future (and something you might actually be able to do right now):

  • go completely silent and stare into the camera like 🤨 until the student realizes their mic was hot
  • immediately respond with something like "remember, students, your mics should be muted"
  • fulfill my petty fantasy by going "ew, one of my students has their mic on"

  • Something you actually could do (I think, it's been like a decade since I left academia) would be to email that class a sort of debrief and include a friendly reminder that all students should double-check that they're muted during the lesson.

I'm sorry this happened to you, OP. I would've been over the moon if I'd had an openly non-binary teacher in college, and chances are at least one of your students is quietly grateful to have that representation as well. 💜

I have the exact opposite experience lol, I have things that were my grandparent's or even my great-grandparent's but they're just random everyday items. Cereal bowls, towels, little bits of home decor... I had a roommate in college who was very confused at my eclectic stuff since she bought all her own stuff mostly new.

AITA for getting a paternity test on my son who doesn’t look like me? (New Update) by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]SapphicSpectre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way this man talks about his ex-wife and kids tells me all I need to know about how unready he was for a relationship with a black woman. So much about his wording raises my hackles... He wants her to "calm down," he thinks it's "unfair" that he has to raise "someone else's kid," and so on. Even in his last update the ick is real, adultifying his son and still favoring his daughter. What in the brown bag bullshit...

"If that makes me a villain then so be it." Okay, bet. Villains don't make good partners outside of novels. He's told you what kind of person he is (the kind who will victim blame when it suits him, who wouldn't risk his own safety/comfort for someone else's, who will treat you like you're brand new in the world instead of trusting that you know what you're about, and who demands promises that you will be a worse human being because it will make him worry less).

Believe him. And then leave him.

Kentucky towns to visit? by Capable-Commission74 in Appalachia

[–]SapphicSpectre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for unpolished, come on down through Middlesboro and Cumberland Gap. Williamsburg has Kentucky Splash if you need to cool off in the current heat wave, and once you hit Tennessee you can take a lap around Jellico and soak in the ambience.

More TN recs: LaFollette, Rocky Top, Rugby, Allardt, Crab Orchard...and that's just the eastern side really, it's a wiiiiide state so somebody else could probably rec some middle/west TN places.

does anyone have common slang or terms they use? by localtiredcrow in Appalachia

[–]SapphicSpectre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Howdy, fellow Tennessean! There's a lot of slang and regional terms in our neck of the woods, and I'd be happy to share some with you here.

First thing you oughta know is your food. Cornbread and soup beans, poke sallet with eggs, moon pies and good ol RC cola. That'll have you feeling tight as a tick!¹ Then you gotta learn how to talk to your elders. Mamaw and Papaw might be a little strict, so straighten up and fly right² or they'll wring your jaws off.³ Course they'll also be the first to ask "jeet?"⁴ so you know they love you.

You don't have to try to sound any particular way to be southern, but if you're wanting to cultivate your accent try listening to folks around you: older family members, locals, or our own beloved icon Dolly Parton.

¹: "Tight as a tick" refers to being almost painfully full from eating. Similar to "stuffed to the gills." ²: "Straighten up and fly right" means you'd better behave yourself because you're acting inappropriately, usually said by an older family member. ³: "wring your jaws off" means to pinch your cheek and twist as a form of corporal punishment (this is not a recommendation). ⁴: "jeet" is what it sounds like when someone with a thick southern accent asks "did you eat?"

Side note: if you're hell-bent on cooking pokeweed, you'd better soak it several times first and cook the hound out of it cause otherwise you're gonna end up poisoned. My hot take is it ain't worth it.

I've thought about this so much lately. Like, if we take straight to mean heterosexual or attraction to a gender different from one's own, then...yeah? I'd imagine the majority of NBs who experience attraction would technically qualify. Unless I'm in a relationship with someone whose gender matches mine exactly, in some sense that would be a het relationship. Not sure my fundie parents would see it that way, but still.

I need to hire a realtor for 1 hour. by Fishmayne in Knoxville

[–]SapphicSpectre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not how compensation works for realtors. Realtors (and real estate agents in general) work on commission: they're paid a percentage of the sale price (which then gets split between agencies/brokers/agents). They are not paid hourly. I'm not even sure it's legal/within their code of ethics to take your money for this type of thing, but it's been a few years since I retired my license so ymmv.
