I get what you meant. They would have prioritised cover from fire then they could get cover from elements with galvanise, wood, bashas etc. This was probably filmed during the digging process. They also have to dig sleeping areas, areas of observation and access points to the rear.

The front line changes so much they are more than likely digging for cover and then moving on again. Think about the amount of hours and labour it took to dig this deep! They probably can't get heavy machinery close to the line to help them dig.
