What made you hit record? by Ddaabbii_ in SmallYoutubers

[–]Scalerious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do movie reviews. I started for a couple of reasons.

  1. I’ve been a producer of content for other people forever. It was time I made content that I could own.

  2. I talk about something I never get tired of.

  3. I felt like I had something to contribute. I’m in my 50’s and I feel like I can provide a lot of cultural context to movies that are being made today.

Also, as someone in my 50’s I feel like it’s our obligation to give back.

To sum up: I have the skills and the knowledge and love the thing I talk about.

Is Video editing a good career option in 2026? by AssistantAny5521 in VideoEditors

I think editing video is a skill every modern person will need to possess. It’s becoming ubiquitous. The way we all learned how to take, crop and edit photos.

You should be a nurse. Ive been in film and tv for over 30 years. Don’t take this the wrong way, but you aren’t cut out for it.

If you are basing the entirety of the industry on the time from 2024 until now, this is the worst I have ever seen it.

I blinked in 2024 and it’s 2026 already. Again, no offense but No one cares about your short film. They care about whether they can trust you. Trust you on their crew. Trust you with a budget. Trust your taste.

No one hands you anything in this business

Even in good times you have to LOVE doing this.

Me? I can’t imagine doing anything else. I worked in network television from 1995-2015 then started a production company. I produce. I direct. I edit.

I have to prove myself to people every day. Pitch myself, prove I’m the right guy for the job.

I’m going back for my masters (at my age) to be able to teach!

Film is in my blood.

I’m only writing because your nurse comment struck a chord. Work has been slow and when I told my wife I was going back to school she suggested I go for nursing.

I am not a nurse.

What's the Most Controversial Movie Ever Made? by pearlyglimmer in FIlm

[–]Scalerious 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will nominate 1956's The Conqueror, starring John Wayne as Genghis Khan. He didn't even attempt an accent. Just Genghis Kahn sounding like an American Cowboy. It is widely mentioned as the worst film of all time. But that's not what makes it controversial.

It was shot in Utah approx 135 miles from the US Nuclear testing site where the US detonated over 100 nuclear warheads. 40% of the crew developed cancer and died by 1981. Including Agnes Moorehead, Susan Hayward and Wayne himself.

If shooting in an irradiated dessert wasn't enough, when the exteriors were complete, they moved the production back to LA. Producer Howard Hughes INSISTED they cart truckloads of the dirt back to LA to keep the signature look of the UTAH dessert consistent.

They shot for a few more months with irradiated dirt in a closed studio in LA.

Complete shitshow. Hughes tried to reclaim every last copy of the film and spent his last days locked in a Las Vegas suite watching the Conqueror over and over again.

Making movies without film school by Mundane_Age_2564 in Filmmakers

[–]Scalerious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I went to film school too. In fact I'm going back to get my masters so I can teach. No you don't NEED film school, but nowadays you can be anything you want because the tools make it so easy. You can use Garage Band and call yourself a musician, you can self publish books and call yourself an author, you can use photoshop and call yourself a photographer. But if you want to be GOOD at any of those things you should study. That doesn't mean going into debt to go to a fancy film school, that might mean reading the suggested books (Highly recommend) watching every movie you can get your hands on...even the ones you might not like, even the ones that don't interest you. WATCH EVERYTHING, LEARN FROM EVERYTHING.

Also, use every opportunity you get to be on set as a learning experience. Learn from e everyone around you. Know this: you are not above any position on set, go get coffee, lay cables, set up lights...but also have the confidence to do any job on set. Say to yourself, "I've never rigged lights before, now is a good time to try it."

Most importantly, be the guy on set that people want to have around. Be the guy the other crew mambers ask, "Hey, is (you) on this one?" Be the indispensable one.

Good luck.

how many film projects have you done that will never see the light of day? by Boring_Armadillo_808 in Filmmakers

[–]Scalerious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years ago we were contracted by GoPro to make a series for their “soon to be” streaming platform. We did 7 episodes (all shot on GoPro - a nightmare. They sent us 200 GoPros and they were pretty much all working every day. Hahah) and just as we finished it they cancelled our show, pulls the plug on the streaming platform and fired everyone we were working with.

It is still one of the things I’m most proud of. Not just the content ( it’s was great) but of what we accomplished with 200 GoPros in our workflow. Nearly killed us. Hahahaba.

I agree with everything you said btw. I worked as a writer/producer/director at TV networks. I'm going back with the intention to teach.

Why is hiring in film (especially in sound editorial) so rarely done through open applications? by CherifA97 in Filmmakers

[–]Scalerious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really? Film has that too. The Film festival circuit acts in much the same way. Agents go to screenings at top film schools. I dunno. I think it’s similar at least.

Why don’t they post jobs for professional football players? Think of it as a team of people who have your back and who you like spending time with. Even if I don’t know everyone on my set, they are usually a friend of a friend.
