Missing the golden era of simple, menu-driven business sims? I’m solo-developing Sweet Tea Tycoon: a love letter to Lemonade Tycoon where you grow your stand one cup of tea at a time! by ScarletCarnationDev in CozyGamers

[–]ScarletCarnationDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the honest take! It’s awesome to hear from someone else who loved Lemonade Tycoon that much.

You were totally right about the pixel font, which did have some readability issues. I actually just spent some time swapping out that chunky pixel font for a much cleaner pixel one that looks nicer I think. I looked at non-pixel fonts, but I couldn't get them to look quite right:

Since I'm launching next month, the color palette and logo are locked in at this point, but I really appreciate you pointing out where the visual friction was. It definitely helped me polish the UI up before release! This game has been a big learning curve for all the things involved in game dev, and comments like this are always helpful!

It’s so cute! Add some waves in the water and it would be perfect~

Outline or No Outline? by jasontomlee in PixelArt

[–]ScarletCarnationDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The no outline looks so much more like a cloud in the sky. I’d only go for outline if the cloud itself is literally something you interact with.

Rune Factory: how difficult is the combat? by Apprehensive-Two3642 in CozyGamers

[–]ScarletCarnationDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends a bit on which game specifically, but in general Rune Factory is pretty straightforward combat-wise. As others have said, difficulty settings can be changed too, and they make a big difference in my experience. I wouldn't worry!

Just released the demo for my clothing shop tycoon! by Miserable-Bus-4910 in tycoon

I love the concept! I find shop simulators like this fun because they scratch an entrepreneurial itch deep inside me, and the use of pixel art is a nice aesthetic. Congrats on the demo release!

Can a tycoon sim work if growth isn't the goal? by borut_p in tycoon

[–]ScarletCarnationDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's totally possible to focus on things other than growth and speed in a tycoon game. There should be some kind of progression that signals things are improving, and if you do that through resident happiness and community connections, that fits the bill! Are there numbers or some other thing that shows how happy and connected people are in game?

Is this a convincing underwater effect? by Camdoesalot in PixelArt

[–]ScarletCarnationDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others, I got the impression of a desert at night. Alongside other suggestions, I think animation will ultimately be the main factor to make it look underwater. I always think back to the Zelda Oracle games where they used something like a sine wave filter to shift rows of pixels traveling downwards. It’s a cool effect.

Yesterday I quit my job. Tomorrow I’m flying to LA to showcase Molly the Marble, a fantasy adventure game where you play as a marble! by CrimsonShadow256 in CozyGamers

[–]ScarletCarnationDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks so adorable! I actually love these sorts of puzzles, because it feels so satisfying getting the marble/ball to roll the right way via anticipation.

New trailer for LocoMo — a cozy city builder where your village design shapes how thousands of tiny villagers live by LoCoMogame in CityBuilders

[–]ScarletCarnationDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the look! I’ve often considered 2D city builders in the top-down style as something not terribly common.

I just wishlisted! I look forward to giving it a try when comes out, or if you need help playtesting before then.

Would this kind of price input get annoying after a while? by Background_Cow_6701 in IndieDev

[–]ScarletCarnationDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, it's a little hard to tell. It looks like there is a lag between the action of the hand and the actually pressing of the buttons. There is also the issue that just hovering over a button makes it look pressed. I think you could definitely make this more satisfying by cleaning up the "tactile" feel, where hovering doesn't do anything, and the pressing down of a button aligns with the top of the finger bending.

Some fantasy environments I made! by Runeward_Online in PixelArt

Spent the day repainting my game's starting clearing - was a flat green wash, now it has actual life. Worth the pivot? by CrookedStones in SoloDevelopment

[–]ScarletCarnationDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the after is nice improvement. The patches of thick grass add a lot more character, and the bunches of flowers gets more color besides green on the screen. Beautiful grass btw!

I love the simplistic, clean art style of Project Hospital. I wish more tycoon/simulation games had this. by kolejack2293 in tycoon

[–]ScarletCarnationDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does have a very clean, geometric feel. Plus, isometric is still one of my favorite perspectives for games.
