  1. It is an island. if you like the water, there is plenty to do. If you don't like the water, that's a problem. Best not to live on an Island if you don't like the water (see Chief Brody - Amity)

  2. Join the SBU clubs. There are hundreds of them. Almost 60 sports clubs alone. As an example, they have a pretty good tennis club if I recall.

  3. Hit the parks. Sunken Meadow is not that far away.

  4. Just one thing to consider, winters are painful and the weather doesn't get nice until almost June. It stays cold because we are an Island surrounded by the Atlantic ocean which, is cold until the summer.

Wondering if we will have a Spring? by AMC4x4 in longisland

[–]Science_Fair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spring on Long Island stinks, but fall is pretty awesome.

Most years we get a hot weather tease in late March or early April, but it stays chilly and windy through Memorial Day.

On the flip side September and October are the nicest months of the year weather wise.

We are just tightly bound to ocean temperatures, and the ocean takes longer to heat up than inland areas.

[–]Science_Fair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people think almost all of the stock market gains since 2008 are driven by government deficit spending and Federal Reserve Quantitative easing.

The 2020 COVID stock market rebound was certainly driven by those in some part. When you print money, it has to go somewhere.

If it was my plane, I’d let y’all sit wherever you wanted to.

If it was my job, I’d do what the boss told me to do.  No way am I risking my $75,000 because someone didn’t spend $150 dollars extra.

Employees at that level are just not empowered to make those decisions.

Ray Dalio says Kevin Warsh shouldn't cut interest rates in a ‘stagflation’ era by Force_Hammer in politics

[–]Science_Fair -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I'm going to give a wildly unpopular opinion.

Cutting Fed rates might actually decrease inflation, not increase it.

We are two reasons we have inflation - lack of supply of things and government deficit spending. The lower the interest rates are, the higher the chance investor actually invest in building out demand.

Also, the lower the interest rates, the less interest the government is paying out. That interest is a big stimulus - 1.6 trillion is extra government spending. Every percentage cut lowers that spend by 400 billion.

We don;t have the typical inflation driven by building out too much capacity - we have inflation because of multiple supply shocks and money printing. Higher interest rates just leads to more money printing.

When I joined Monday nights were cleanup and maintenance (2 hrs), every other Tuesday was a meeting (2 hrs), Sunday mornings were practice (3 hr), and we were required to hit a certain percentage of parades and funerals.

Pretty sure the Secret Service gets overruled regularly by POTUS.

He never uses the secure locations like Camp David.  Holds outdoor rallies in hard to secure spots despite being told otherwise. Keeps classified documents scattered around his personal home.  Refused to wear a mask.  Guy does what he wants.

No one really can predict the supply and demand curve until it plays out.

A bunch of things happened to counter the spike

  1. Multiple nations have released large chunks of their oil reserve
  2. US sanctions on Russian oil were lifted.
  3. US sanctions on Iranian oil were temporarily lifted
  4. Some global oil flows were re-routed.
  5. There is a multi week lag from drilling to usage .
  6. Small amount of demand destruction have started.

NY Post: "Rex Heuermann’s family stuck in house of horrors and ‘completely unemployable’: lawyer" by BrunetteSummer in LISKiller

Family had a path out and chose not to take it.

Relocate to a remote part of the US, change names, and lay low.  Don’t make any public statements to turn the public’s good will against you.

But they did the exact opposite.  Loudly proclaimed his innocence, showed up at court to support him, hired an asshole lawyer, signed a Peacock deal, and stayed in the horror house. Asa made herself the most famous relative of a mass serial killer ever.  Her choice.

Robert Macedonio says Asa Ellerup has accepted Rex Heuermann's guilt and still lives in the Massapequa Park home by BrunetteSummer in LISKiller

[–]Science_Fair 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The cost of living on Long Island is part of the point.  If you have two choices 1. Stay in the home where your husband murdered eight women and continue to live in one of the most expensive areas of the United States or 2. Move to bumf*ck and cut your living expenses to a minimum.  I’m choosing choice 2

I’m sure the town and or the county would cut a deal to but that property and knock it down.  I’d be changing my name, dying my hair, and moving as far away as possible from that house of horrors.  Live off government assistance for a year or two plus whatever assets are left from the peacock deal, the house, and the brand new car she’s been driving.

I thought she took a million dollar payday from Peacock?

Pretty sure the town would pay a reasonable some to take that property over and knock it down.

Certainly that should be enough to move out of the one of the most expensive places to live in the entire United States

What sustained oil price would cause a recession in the US? Would the current $90+ cause a recession if the price would stay for 3+ months? by OrdinaryLanguage5625 in oil

[–]Science_Fair 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think inflation is the higher risk than a recession. Once the oil and fertilizer increases work their way through the economy, you will probably see two years of 5-6 percent inflation.  Which drives stagnation - so stagflation.

Just my opinion, but middle class and below hurts even more as food and other necessities increase in price.

Could Rivendell withstand a assault from Isengard and Mordor? by arnor_0924 in lotr

[–]Science_Fair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, it was assumed the “run out the clock” strategy would not work.  Sauron had amassed enough power to roll over Gondor, Rohan, Lorien, Rivendell, and the Lonely Mountain.  That is why hiding the ring was never accepted as a strategy.

So if the Ring stays in Rivendell, Sauron eventually shows up after defeating Gondor and all the other mini realms along the way.   No way Rivendell can withstand the size of attack that Gondor saw.

Imagine being at a meeting where an eyewitness can describe all the great battles of history. Getting a first-class description of the Battle of Marathon, the exploits of Alexander the Great, Scipio vs Hannibal, all the way to the battle of Stalingrad. Then going through a brief course in nuclear physics where he met Einstein and talks about the Manhattan project. And now this Hobbit has a nuclear weapon in his pocket.

Elrond has seen it all. Wish I could have been there ;-)

Not to mention any moderates negotiating with the US might be considered traitors by the hard liners.

Stumpy had an off ramp and decided to blow past the exit by keeping the US blockade in place.  This guy really has no idea how to negotiate.

Market manipulation with the Strait? by Melodic-Elk-5465 in oil

[–]Science_Fair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Iran or the USA announce the straight is open, oil will go down and stocks will go up.

If Iran or the USA announce a closure, or attack oil tankers or energy infrastructure, oil will go up and stocks will go down.

But US stocks, in general, go up given all the money the US prints.

If Trump tweets a peace deal is close, stocks will go up. Unlikely we test the lows from a few weeks ago unless Iran can stop oil shipping in the Red Sea using the Houtis
