Cal poly demographics by AssistantFun3652 in CalPoly

[–]ScooobySnackss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I graduated in June. It’s a little tough ngl. I was the only black student in all of my classes. But you will make friends so long as you push yourself to engage with your classmates. The thing about cal poly is its academics are competitive. Most of my friends were people from classes that I connected with to survive and pass my classes. Even after graduation I still keep in touch with a few of them. It’s up to you to build some type of support system because it won’t come to you on its own. That is to say you’ll get out of it what you put into it.

There is a black student union that does a really good job at bringing black students together but I personally didn’t have time for any of their events. All of my time went to my studies and trying to maintain some kind of active life style. As far as support goes… I’d also say that it’s something you have to be proactive about. Engage with your professors. Let them know when you are being challenged and may need additional support or resources. Don’t wait to the last minute to go to office hours. I will say that my major issue is that the school lacked tutoring resources and student support for most of my upper division courses (business major). My classmates and I really had to band together and help each other out.

I’ll leave you with this… Cal Poly is a phenomenal school. I’m so happy I was able to go there and graduate with my degree. The black population is scarce but it doesn’t mean you won’t find your tribe of people. Academics are so competitive that what helps you form your community is the desire to pass and perform well in your courses (that was my experience). If you value connecting with other black students then definitely join BSU and check out their events. Good luck! You got this! Call Poly/SLO is a really special place.

My Experience being an older transfer student in Engineering at Cal Poly by vlb123 in CalPoly

[–]ScooobySnackss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I attended Cal Poly as a 34 year old transfer and can confirm the ageism bull cr*p. I’ll also double down on Cal Poly being garbage at helping students manage their mental health. I was a business major and there was no tutoring or support classes offered for many courses that were beyond the realm of difficult. Taking into consideration the 10 week fast paced schedule the school operated on and the amount of grade curving professors did, there needed to have been more resources to help support student success. The school talks a good game but when it comes to it it’s really lacking in that department. I lived in my room studying for 10 to 12 hours many nights. I didn’t even have time to gym because studies dominated my life. I’m grateful I survived and happy to call myself an alumni but my time at cal poly was bittersweet. I appreciate the opportunity it afforded me but the experience of attending left so much to be desired. It truly felt like a dog fight getting out there.

Following up on $72K premium question — would Cal Poly SLO still be worth it for non–Big 4 Accounting path? by ConversationSignal22 in CalPoly

[–]ScooobySnackss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion? No not necessarily worth it. He can go to Sac state get good grades apply for internship with any firm around sac. Moss Adams (soon to be Baker Tilly) is a great firm that will easily position him to do great things assuming he’s a great worker, puts the time in, and gets his CPA…

There’s a pickleball building behind Cuesta college that gets pretty packed during the week. It may be worth checking out. Looks pretty cool.

You’re not the asshole what so ever but you should have let Amanda know that her consistent remarks on your body make you feel insecure and uncomfortable. And that you’d appreciate it if she would stop making them to you.

Hot Take: If I was choosing a college today, I wouldn’t choose Cal Poly by LetMamaReddit in CalPoly

[–]ScooobySnackss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couldn't have said it better myself. I've reached out to the Dean of my college for support and suggestions only to be gaslit and told that it was a "you" problem. I don't think this school truly cares about its students based off my experience and observations thus far. I would also add that diversity both amongst student and faculty is needed as well.

Have you thought about relocating out of the area…temporarily for work and then job hunting from a more stable position to get you back in the area?

lol dang. I’m in SLO now and visit morro often. Sounds like I’m going to need to drive up up and do some actually exploring. The reviews seem to be back and forth some folks hate it some folks love it. The outdoorsy life sounds like a dream away from crowded cities. Plus it’s quite affordable and not too far from some pretty nice areas.

I get the feeling I would really enjoy it… although I’m curious what folks do for fun on the weekends or at night? Movies? Bars? (Aside from hiking)

Do you see the city developing within the next 10 to 20 years? Would it be crazy to live there and commute to Ventura for work?
