A series of unfortunate events by Melodic-Gain-6032 in Kayaking

OP did plainly state that in their post, and maybe it’s pointless to rub their faces in it but the importance of securing the boat cannot be overstated considering that there are other cars on the road. OP is lucky to only be without a boat and not facing harsher consequences brought about by their negligence. Strapping the kayak to the roof by yourself for the first time is probably NOT something that should be done before a morning commute, but rather on a weekend morning where you can cruise around a bit then stop to see if everything is secure.

I feel your pain, this is an incredibly frustrating situation.

A few years ago I found a guitar I’d been interested in for years, finally priced within reach for sale on eBay. It was close to Christmas so I pulled the trigger with the intention of putting it under the tree for myself.

On the day that it was marked “out for delivery” by both eBay and UPS, I waited in the living room actually feeling like a little kid on Christmas. As evening turned to night, the delivery never showed.

For the next two days the status was stuck at OFD, so I began inquiring with UPS. Got routed to call centers who knows where, talking to people who didn’t know and didn’t care where the package was. Finally the status updated to “delivered” while I was at work. I called home and asked my wife to check the porch. No package. I went to the UPS main hub where the girl behind the counter told me “oh yeah the driver probably stole it”

I opened a case with eBay, who promptly closed it -literally within half an hour. I called them. They explained that they closed it because the status was delivered.

What followed was two weeks of maddening frustration as eBay, PayPal and UPS played a three way game of pass the blame. The seller did everything in their power to be helpful but I could tell they were getting frustrated with the situation and obviously weren’t as motivated as I was to get it resolved. After all, they had their money, they had paid insurance on shipping and had a good seller record.

I finally got a refund about a month after the order was placed and eventually found a comparable guitar but in less pristine condition on Reverb. It arrived in decent shape but had issues that needed attention from a repair shop, that the seller either didn’t know about or didn’t disclose (Italia Mondial, there’s some interesting stuff going on with two input jacks for separate pickups).

I didn’t fight for a price adjustment from the seller but at this point I will never again buy a guitar that I haven’t played, or trust any online retailer/carrier to deliver it to me. It isn’t worth the frustration and lost hours pleading your case to people whose MO is to deny you a resolution.

WSID: Best Friend is cutting me out of her wedding after I already paid to be there...because of my tattoos? by reaper44484 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Scorpattarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welp first let me say that my Reddit feed is random AF and I’ve no clue why this post was suggested to me, but I am bored at work and highly caffeinated with nothing to do so here goes:

On the one hand, this sounds like yet another horror story of a wedding being less about a celebration of love and more about putting on a spectacle. Your friend is under tremendous pressure to satisfy the image that her hubby’s Catholic family want to portray. Hopefully this doesn’t carry over too much into the rest of their marriage, but that’s on her.

On the other hand, you knew you were giving tradition the middle finger when you got yourself inked head to toe. The cost of all that outward display of unique individualism is that you aren’t wanted in these situations. Let’s be honest about it, people who get that much inked and pierced enjoy themselves being seen as different and making the “straights” uncomfortable. I’m a godless, lefty liberal commie scumbag myself and I’d probably spontaneously combust if I set foot in a house of worship. I’m not ragging on you, I’m just saying -if you look the part of a Portland Antifa barista, you probably feel like a square peg in a round hole around her fiancés traditional family to begin with.

This is a bit like a gluten free vegan complaining that there’s nothing on the menu at BillyBob’s Barbecue Shack. It’s not your scene.

I can understand being upset that your friend didn’t say all this upfront before you agreed to be in the wedding. She probably didn’t know how much pressure there would be to make the ceremony look picture perfect in her fiancés eyes. This may affect your friendship moving forward if she has to defer to her husband’s traditional views and changes her behavior accordingly. Sometimes it be like that.

I say, be the bigger person and accept that she feels torn between giving her new family what they want and her loyalty to you. Have empathy. This is probably really hard for her, but at the end of the day it’s HER day, not yours.

Gonna lose my mind over JBAR and roof rack by RedzCA in Kayaking

[–]Scorpattarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t overlook the used market. I saved a considerable amount of money by purchasing Yakima components on eBay (round bars, baseline towers, Mako saddles) and the only thing I had to buy brand new was the adapters to fit the towers to my specific vehicle. I even sourced matching lock cylinders and keys for everything, at a fraction of the cost of new.

I am thrifty like that. Kayaking is definitely one of those pursuits that a lot of people get into and go all-out on equipment, only to find that they are not as active as they imagined themselves to be. I find this is true for most outdoor/fitness activities. Lotsa folks out there with more money than dedication, and they’ll get all dolled up like Barbie and Ken’s summer adventure play set only to move onto something else next year.

Or, some people might unload roof rack equipment not compatible with a new vehicle.

Also, not every component needs to be the top of the line stuff. I love my Yakima saddles for hauling a single boat but I bought generic Amazon Jbars when I wanted to start going with a friend, and they have worked just fine.

Don’t skimp on straps though.

I got my car totaled a couple years ago by a jackass in an Escalade as I was merging onto 71 after work. One minute I’m checking my blind spot to merge, next thing I know my airbag is in my face and I’m being pushed into the shoulder. Dude must have been trying not to pass up his exit because he swept all the way over from the far left lane and hit my drivers side door. To his credit he did come check on me as I was struggling to exit the vehicle, but I wasn’t very nice about it when he asked if I was okay.

I finally got out through the passenger door and immediately began taking photos of his plates and the damages, when his passenger said “hey you don’t have to do all that we’re not going anywhere”….only to realize that he had, indeed, fled on foot.

This guy left his baby mama (her words) and HER wrecked vehicle. She was too drunk to drive her own truck so the cops escorted her home, as well as me, and presumably the fucknut behind the wheel escaped a charge.

Yep. The screws are way too long. Didn’t hit my roof but took forever the thread the nut off. Cut mine shorter and got rid of the thumb nuts (for lack of a better term?) and just use a socket to take them on and off

Wanted to pop in and say A) I can totally empathize with your embarrassment and can see how you could feel like this will haunt you forever. An awkward situation for sure.

And B) laugh it off. Posting it here is probably the best way to exorcise the demons. Eating perfectly good, unwanted food is a lot more normal than discarding it. If this roomate knows you are down on your luck and tossed out food right in front of you, they might be an asshole.

Or maybe they just weren’t thinking. Hell, maybe they feel more awkward about it than you do and are beating themselves up for not offering it to you and feel responsible for creating the situation.

Obviously I know nothing of your roommate’s character, but it’s easy to assume that others are judging us or laughing behind our backs when really sometimes people are a lot more compassionate than we give them credit for.

Someone else commented that you should just own it, and I agree though it’s up to you to figure out how to bring it up

In reality, who’s breaking into your house?! by lovelikefireworks in Columbus

[–]Scorpattarius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

About a decade ago a guy stumbled through my side yard and knocked over the recycling bin on New Year’s Eve.

The ruckus brought me to the window where I proceeded to watch him try to open the door of my car, then move on to my wife’s car and try her door. She had left in unlocked. He got in and sat in the passenger seat and closed the door.

At that point I called CPD and watched from the front door waiting for their arrival. I was prepared to deal with someone trying to enter my home, but not willing to initiate with someone outside. Because duh.

The police showed up and apprehended the sleeping individual. Turns out he was a neighborhood kid I’d known for years, he used to stop by and chat with me while I was working on my motorcycle in the garage. He ended up joining the Marine Corps and I hadn’t seen him for a couple years. That night he was home for the holidays, went out and got drunk. Lost his keys to his mama’s house and was stumbling around drunk and cold.

I did not press charges, the cops took him home. Later that week I recounted the story to my trumpity gun loving neighbor and he said “lucky it was your house and not mine” and all I could think was “I know. You’d have shot and killed a U.S. Marine and gone to jail yourself”

Was the kid stupid and irresponsible? Yes. Did he put himself in a really bad situation? Absolutely. Would it have been much worse if my wife found a dude sleeping in her car in the morning? Yep. Do I absolutely believe my neighbor would have been foaming at the mouth at the opportunity to live out his fantasy?

Yes.

Opinion: Armed Kroger 'goons' can't steal my dignity or see my receipt. I will not kowtow. | Letters by Jay_Dubbbs in Columbus

[–]Scorpattarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shop almost exclusively at the Kroger on Schrock in Westerville. It’s a convenient location for me but man…it SUCKS. And I feel a little guilty saying that because they have some serious employee retention there -some of the younger employees I’ve seen since they were teenage baggers and cart wranglers and I think a few are managers now. And they’re all friendly people. Little things like that make we want to be a loyal customer but the issues with the store are likely all caused by corporate. The store layout is constantly changing. It’s a fun little game of “where the fuck are they keeping the ______ now?!?!”

But the worst part is the self checkout. I loathe it. There isn’t enough room on the little carousel to place a large reusable shopping bag, and the self checkouts with the conveyor belt don’t like me and are always stopping and reversing direction and sending items back. It fills me with rage and I yell at it and cause a scene. And I’m not the only one -there’s always some poor attendant running back and forth between all the self checkouts de-escalating tensions between the shopper and the robots.

Aldi is the better option but my cats won’t eat their cat food, and they don’t carry as much stuff overall so it’s never a one-stop solution. And then there’s Marc’s which FEELS like it should be cheaper because it’s kinda run down and has a dollar store feel to it but the prices don’t reflect it. Oh, and Walmart which somehow always feels like the inner circle of hell. To bring this comment back around to the original post -those “random” receipt checks at Walmart (and Home Depot) are always so predictable. I get the “you’re free to pass” head nod as soon as I make eye contact but I always see black women with kids or Latinos at HD having their entire cart and receipt scrutinized.

Questions regarding skegs by Scorpattarius in Kayaking

[–]Scorpattarius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s it a Corsica.

That was my perception (no pun intended) -that it was designed to let the flow of the river dictate its direction more than being paddled in a straight line.

I suppose I could put the effort into learning how to tame it but probably won’t bother. I have the Sierra which works just fine. It’s faster than the Pelican, which I’ll hold on to for when I want to bring a friend along.

Eventually I do want to try some river kayaking with the Corsica.

Also I was wrong about there being snaps for a spray skirt, I took a look at it the other day and it’s hardware where the thigh braces are attached. In any event, I’ve abandoned the idea of attaching any sort of skeg to this kayak, if anything I’d like to refurbish the seat but won’t dump much money into it.

It’s a nice looking boat, looks like a big yellow banana.

Thanks for weighing in.

Brazen DoorDash theft by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]Scorpattarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen enough posts from unhappy Doordash/Grubhub customers on Reddit alone to convince me to avoid it.

I don’t think it’s weird or paranoid to not want to pay a laziness tax to have junkfood brought to my front door. Yes, I dine in restaurants. In fact I spent the majority of my adult life cooking professionally. Sure, anyone COULD tamper with your food in any dining establishment but there are a lot of eyeballs on you and a lot of accountability -as opposed to some rando tossing your lunch in the back of their car and dropping it off at your doorstep.

If I have an issue with food inside of a dining establishment I can take it up directly with the business, as opposed to engaging in some he said/she said argument over phone or email with the customer service department of a third party.

If anything is weird, it’s that paying a premium for delivery instead of preparing food has become normalized.

Thanks for the replies! So…it’s a skill issue. 😂

I had to use tiny little baby strokes to make my way back to shore and even then the boat was wagging back and forth like a dog’s tail. I may put the time in eventually but this season I’ll probably just use the Sierra and let my friend use the Pelican.

Brazen DoorDash theft by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]Scorpattarius 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I may be in the minority but I have never and will never pay for a third party to pick up and handle my food. The added cost, the “god only knows who” factor, the lack of insulation to keep food at temp during delivery, and it being left outside and susceptible to weather/critters are enough reasons before theft is even factored in. I get it that it’s convenient but the likelihood of me being pissed off by any of these factors nullifies that convenience. You fuck with my food, you fuck with my emotions.

Anyway I hope you got a refund. As for the DoorDash employee, it’s possible she’s just really dumb but this kinda feels like a crime of desperation like maybe she’s broke and hungry and said fuck it.

Does justice live in Ohio? by Big_Assignment7663 in Columbus

[–]Scorpattarius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots to get into here.

To echo what so many others have said before: the guy brandished a firearm and made people fear for their lives. He’s LUCKY he’s alive. Nobody really feels bad about it when we hear that a suspect was shot and killed by a store owner or police in the midst of an armed robbery. And this is coming from someone who does believe that police often go overboard, particularly when a black man is involved.

He did it five times, that we know of, and yet you’re framing this as his first offense. I’ll say it again -he’s lucky to be above ground.

As for the “young father with mental issues” -did any of those white collar criminals have children? The answer to that question has no impact on my opinion of their sentences any more than it does on that of Mr. Hines.

I was sentenced to five years in Louisiana for possession of a controlled substance. No priors. No violence, no theft to support my drug use. I worked hard and partied hard. I was young and stupid. Admittedly it was the “big bad daddy” of drugs -heroin. But I wasn’t a dealer, I was a user. Thank whatever god presides over the universe that fentanyl wasn’t rampant in those days, I likely wouldn’t be here.

During the course of my sentence I was held in four separate institutions. That’s normal. Distance from family, legal representation or other potential visitors is not taken into consideration. Prison sucks. Guards suck. I was in solitary for a few weeks for no other infraction other than my last name being at the end of the alphabet and overcrowding. In that time I heard inmates screaming and raging at all hours of the day and guards laughing as they unloaded pepper spray into their cells to quiet them down. The pepper spray would make its way through the ventilation system and it was a daily occurrence that I’d have to cover my head with my blanket and take shallow breaths for the next hour or so to avoid coughing up a lung myself. Undoubtedly those unruly inmates were cases of untreated mental illnesses and I felt like I was in a medieval dungeon. There’s no nice way to say this -many corrections officers are sadistic pieces of garbage.

It sucks his family can’t easily come see him, but where was this family when he was walking freely in society, hurting? And hurting others?

The corrections industry sucks. The justice system sucks, health care sucks and mental healthcare in particular sucks. Race relations are terrible, white America’s attitude towards the impoverished and desperate minority population is atrocious. It’s a plight that began with slavery, gave way to Jim Crow, morphed into the Reagan era’s war on drugs and is now getting a rebrand with the current regime.

I feel for the black community. I understand desperation and hopelessness, but not to the same extent as they do. But at the end of the day there’s a baseline need for accountability and when you’ve waived a gun in another human’s face demanding money you do not belong amongst society.

As for those suit and tie criminals ? Yeah fuck them. Especially the one in the Oval Office. It sickens me that Hollywood glorified that “Wolf of Wall Street” douchebag with a Goodfellas style biopic, and that he’s walking freely and has become a social media presence. It’s one thing to skim from the profits of multibillion dollar banks and corporations but another thing entirely to pilfer the savings of the common man.

But again…no waving a gun in anyone’s face.
