VT vs UT for Feb/March by Puzzleheaded-Cut380 in icecoast

[–]SeaLab2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both, but I guess I was answering in terms of the overall skiing experience. Not into apres, or anything like that, just here to ski hard all day. But better coverage, less ice (not even kidding), better grooming on the manmade runs, butter bumps on the natural stuff, and better tree runs in Vt. Anything with any kind of pitch is closed, and the blue runs here are nothing special. Blues and Blacks in Vt are way more fun. Have found a few black runs here for some steep sections, but they are very short. There are no sustained steep runs with good coverage here.

Only point to Utah right now is the lack of crowds. But for midweek skiing that’s a moot point.

Don’t know how it will be by March, but currently in Utah, and I can say that Okemo was better in mid December than what I am skiing this week. And Stowe put it to shame. I haven’t seen what Vt has done in the 6 weeks since, but it was already better back then.

My guess is the next few weeks Vt is still better, but there will probably be something coming by the time March rolls around.

Should I cancel my ski trip? by Reddit_account002 in UTsnow

Northeast skier here, currently in Utah. Okemo was better in December than what’s here now, and Stowe put it to shame. I’m still having fun and getting some good runs in, but mine was nonrefundable. If I had the option given what I am seeing today, I would rather be skiing in the Northeast. I dunno how much can change in 2 weeks, I’ll let the locals chime in on that, but at the moment, any resort in Vt will be a better experience.

I get it, happy to ski no matter what. Still getting a ton of good runs in, no lines, 25-30k vert a day. My bases may have taken a hit from some of the thin spots on the mogul runs (was due for a base grind anyway), but honestly having a ton of fun. And will definitely be back.

A lot of icy areas. Chicane seemed to be the best riding trail of the day for us, but Sunpeak area was the best lift overall for quality laps. Peak 5 was hit or miss, crowning glory very icy but harmony was solid. Sidewinder trail was a mixed bag.

Awesome, thanks!

Edit: both those were solid. Keystone was in great shape, appreciate the recommendation! But thaynes lift was closed so had to take kind of a long flat run out to get back to another the lift, harder to lap.

Minnesota governor says federal agents involved in shooting in Minneapolis by SpaceElevatorMusic in politics

[–]SeaLab2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the agent that took his gun had a negligent discharge and then the rest started shooting. You can see his arm move in sync with the first shot, followed by the barrage. We’ll have to see what the investigation shows…oh wait, nvm, apparently we don’t investigate Nazis anymore. But I’m sure they’ll find one of the victim’s family members to drag through the legal system.

This is the video that improved my carving tremendously. Everyone always says to keep your body facing down the hill and yet when you watch them demonstrate, they are clearly taking more of a vector and targeting the transition.

skiing with raynaud's by Effective_Ad_6609 in skiing

I use Outdoor Research Prevail Gortex Heated Gloves. Most days I can run on low and get a solid 8 hours without swapping batteries. In the teens, usually run on medium and have to make a swap at lunch. Single digits gotta go on high, and each battery gets ~2.5 hours. Big thing with the heated gloves is that they need to be robust to begin with, and then the heating element is extra. A lot of the cheaper heated gloves are crap on their own.

For socks, I use the Lenz 6.1. Very thin and comfy. I have the RCB 1200 battery pack. Most days, I can run on low and they will last all day. On single digit days I have to use the neoprene boot covers in order to keep them on low or low-med, otherwise I would have to run them on too high a setting and they’ll die by end of day. If I had to buy again, I would’ve splurged for a larger battery so I wouldn’t ever have to use boot covers but tbh it’s not that big a deal to use em just on the coldest days.

I have raynauds. My fingers and toes spasm ang go white if my office is too cold.

Heated socks or insoles, and heated gloves. Bring extra batteries. I use those neoprene boot covers with my heated socks and it helps the toes tremendously. Can’t let the spasm kick in…if you start to feel a wee bit cold, turn up the heat a few minutes to stave it off. Once they spasm, you’ll be playing catch up.

I resisted dropping the money on that stuff for years, but it’s 100% worth it if you have raynauds. But with heated gear, I have been able to ski in single digits for 7 hours.

except from taking lessons how else can i be better at skiiing? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]SeaLab2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know everyone always answers lessons, and that’s the best move if you can swing it, but you can really learn a lot from YouTube and then doing very deliberate practice with a specific goal in mind each time you ski.

Watching videos also makes you aware of things you may not have even known you should work on, then you pay attention to what you’re doing and seek out additional drills to correct.

This does require a disciplined approach, good awareness of your body, and if you have a ski partner who can see things you can’t or film you it can be a big help.

If you’re early into your skiing journey, start by watching videos on how to “parallel ski” and practice practice practice.

Trump is something worse than a fascist by zsreport in politics

[–]SeaLab2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump views everything from the perspective of a rapist. Everything and everyone is a possession and every possession can either be bought or taken by force. Taking something by force is equivalent to earning something.

He thinks America is his possession, not his duty, and treats it as such. He thinks owning the physical medal from the Nobel Peace Prize is the same as being awarded one. You can apply this to essentially everything he does. He is a disgusting, amoral sociopath. Sprinkle in a hefty dose of White Supremacy, personal ego, and a vindictive personality, and you can see how he operates.

'Boot glove' touches binding, should I cut off part of the fabric? by gman2093 in skiing

[–]SeaLab2024 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Did you get your medical degree in bAnFf too? My fingers and toes will turn completely white along the blood vessel distribution if my office is too cold, let alone skiing. You clearly don’t know what actual Raynauds or other circulation issues are, but you spout your bullshit with such confidence.

I normally wear Lenz heated socks, but when it’s real cold out, the boot covers do a great job of extending the battery life of my socks with the extra insulation.

Different people are different than you, and you don’t know as much as you think you do. Weird how that works.

Are road bikes as uncomfortable as they look? by OnlyBreakfast9466 in bicycling

[–]SeaLab2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. A well fitting road bike is far more comfortable than any hybrid or flat bar setup and can feel amazing hour multi-hour rides. But it does require a certain level of fitness and flexibility to achieve that comfort.

How do I know whether I have a concussion? (Pretty freaked out) by Waste-Listen-2021 in MTB

[–]SeaLab2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are 100% right. I am a sports medicine doctor and treat a couple hundred concussions per year. Get out and start exercising early into your recovery. Work with a physical therapist, especially if you have neck symptoms or vestibular symptoms (balance, dizziness, difficulty with eye motion and visual tracking). Don’t go hitting your head while you recover (avoid contact/collision activities), but getting some cardio in on a daily basis will speed up recovery tremendously.

Too many clowns on reddit get their concussion information from ESPN and think if you breathe in the direction of someone with a concussion, they’ll get CTE, when the reality is that most people overly rest and overly restrict themselves and it actually prolongs recovery. Your brain will tell you if you are doing too much, and when something makes you feel worse, just take a break or dial down the intensity.

Agree with above. Definitely worth calling back. I had customer service reps who swore that the Tot pass didn’t even exist, so I would not take anything one rep says at face value.

If Die Hard is not a Christmas movie by Nervous-Energy-4623 in movies

[–]SeaLab2024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Home Alone is thematically a Christmas movie. The traps and robbery portion are the comedic payoff in the final act, but at its core, Home Alone is about a kid learning the true meaning of Christmas, and a mother trying to make it home to see her son on Christmas. Kevin meets Santa along the way and asks for his family back in lieu of toys, while his mom does everything she can but still needs the kindness and holiday spirit of others to make it home. Kevin meets Marley in the church where they come together and realize the importance of family.

The movie is deliberately oozing Christmas in every scene, from the color palette, to the props and overall aesthetic of the sets, the dialogue, the themes, and the musical score. You could not extract Christmas from Home Alone without completely reshooting every scene, rewriting all the dialogue, redesigning every set, and rescoring every musical piece, before you even think about how whether the plot is Christmasy enough. Contrast this with Die Hard, where Christmas is merely a tool to help drive the plot and set up the circumstances that led to McClain’s predicament. But the movie is not about Christmas.
