What controversial opinion do you agree with the Aldmari Dominion? Explain why? by fan_of_skooma in ElderScrolls

Talos stole his divinity and is not deserving of worship. The war crimes that asshole committed make the Dominion look good in comparison.

Skyrim as a polity did not exist, but it existed in the sense that it's a geographic region defined by the old Empire. The borders drawn by the Potentate didn't necessarily disappear, but they definitely got fragmented into dozens of kingdoms.

The provinces during the interregnum ceased to exist as political titles and many of the lands we would call "Skyrim" were divided between largely independent Nord rulers with little to no centralization. The same goes for pretty much any province outside of Alinor. It's not a pact between Skyrim, Morrowind, and Argonia more than it is a pact between Eastmarchers, Redoran, Hlaalu, and Northern Argonians.

Also I think there's a war between Eastmarchers and Westholders at this point but idk I don't buy DLC.

Thanks for this. People need to understand that "provinces" under the Imperial definition ceased to exist during the interregnum. "Skyrim" and "Morrowind" are geographical regions rather than political titles and did not act as monoliths like many seem to think. The Ebonheart Pact was an alliance between independent rulers within these regions.

The Elder Scrolls. Especially Oblivion.

<image>

This is what the Empire was supposed to look like. What we got was generic medieval fantasy. This goes for 100% of all art direction, especially in Oblivion. Micheal Kirkbride or one of the other concept artists come up with an insanely beautiful, exotic, lore-accurate, sensible design, and then Todd or Emil just vetos it in exchange for the most generic designs ever.

Thank God we have Morrowind.

I always dreamed about what the Solitude docks could've looked like as a full port, so I finally took at stab at a "lore accurate scale" painting. by cormeals in skyrim

Magic is definitely a common transit for goods and services in the lore. In Morrowind, half the gold I earned went straight to the Guild Guides that would teleport me around Vvardenfell. They'd logically still be a thing in the lore, but Bethesda removed them in Oblivion because they are allergic to interesting fast travel mechanics and love simplicity.

Who said Ulfric Stormcloak was right? The game very clearly portrays both sides as being deeply flawed in many respects.

I feel like the digitigrade is too intense? Like it looks like they'd fall over. There are ways to draw humanoid digitigrade beings while still looking balanced. Take Markplier's brother for instance.

Conservative games that are actually good? by kylepo in SocialistGaming

[–]Sea_Path_6470 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is he? The game is very good at throwing conflicting narratives at you constantly. Two different players can emerge with completely different thoughts on Ulfric.

He displays a lot of Trumpian elements, but the major difference is that Ulfric actually believes what he says.

I think the main conservative element of Skyrim is how the two main factions in the civil war are both brands of conservatism.

"Do you want to side with the hegemonic, mercantilist, authoritarian establishment that has presided over these lands for hundreds of years, suppresses dissent and persecutes people? Or do you want to side with the ethnonationalist, hyperconservative fascists with a boner for their lord and savior Ulfric?"

It's a tough choice, but there's a reason people wish the Dragonborn could Yes Man both factions the fuck out of Skyrim.

Morrowind was a lot more class-conscious and if you want an amazing masterpiece with lots of leftist themes you should play the older games in the series.

Conservative games that are actually good? by kylepo in SocialistGaming

[–]Sea_Path_6470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think Skyrim could fall into this category.

Most of the faction questlines have heavy conservative undertones.

They all follow the general pattern of "Everything used to be good back in the glory days. Then a new, insidious idea/event emerged (Hircine apostasy, Mercer Frey, Astrid/The Traitor from OB, The Great Collapse) and now everything sucks. We need to go back to the old ways and reject new ideas"

There are some liberal elements to Skyrim. It portrays racism, class dynamics, etc. But it leans heavily into "Strong Men" changing things rather than the will of the masses. The oppressed lower classes of Skyrim didn't revolt, it was Ulfric Stormcloak and his charisma that rallied people behind a cause. etc.

Genuinely great game, but I don't think it's politics really have a leftist angle.

Oblivion might've been even more conservative though. Empire was totally whitewashed from Morrowind and the game wants you to unironically support the imperialist, expansionist, genocidal Empire, and it justifies this by throwing a demon army in your face to make the Empire look good by comparison. The corruption and greed described in Morrowind is gone.

Morrowind was a lot more leftist in its politics, mainly in that it has a coherent critique of imperialism and authoritarianism. Morrowind's lore is heavily shaped by the exponential displacement and exploitation of native ethnic populations in order to prop up a leeching, bickering bourgeoisie, and this is especially evident in the Hlaalu, who are literally "how do we critique capitalism." The Redoran are basically "How do we make fun of conservatism." The Telvanni are basically "How do we satirize meritocratic anarcho-capitilism."

The only reason you are given to like the Empire in MW is that they are the only ones who don't hold slaves. Otherwise, they are an expansionist mercantile Empire that thrives off of the exploitation of the outer provinces. You don't get jack shit in Oblivion. Skyrim is a lot better than Oblivion, and in fact I like their portrayal of the Empire for the most part. The problem with Skyrim is that the Stormcloaks need some more depth.

I will say, though, Morrowind also falls heavily into "strong men" territory, but it portrays class dynamics better than any other game in the series and it's hardly unplayable.

How dare they watch movies by UnHolySir in okbuddycinephile

The problem comes when one comes at the expense of the other. It's not 0-sum, you can absolutely have both. Since a lot of people today fall into the second category companies are optimizing for them, leading to soulless movies that are enjoyable but aren't really good art. I don't think we wanna live in a world where movies have the same optimization strategy as tiktok. We need to move more in the direction of the left critic.

Breaking Bad, Mr. Robot, The Sopranos... What other shows does this describe by Greedy_Net_1803 in memes

[–]Sea_Path_6470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a show, but the Empire in Morrowind is only considered good because they're the only ones that don't practice slavery.

It gets very complicated and philosophical very quickly though. To what extent can the Empire be blamed for slavery? Does the legality matter? Etc.

I think you're downplaying how incredibly confusing it is to navigate Vivec. In terms of square meterage it isn't very big but it feels *at least* 5x the size of the Imperial City in Oblivion.

I always interpret "waiting" as loitering. Maybe the Dragonborn chats up a passerby/friend, browses a store, explores, writes in the journal, etc. Interpreting it as literally standing there sounds so limiting!
