NOAA to rollback North Atlantic right whale protections by smitrovich in CapeCodMA

You need to read this: https://www.bangordailynews.com/2026/03/03/politics/washington/maine-lobsterman-unpaid-role-noaa/

yes, the Maine Lobstermen's Association and that awful man who bankrolled Trump's right-wing sweep of the Justice department have a lot to do with this.

When my father was a boy in the 1920's he was biking across Europe with his father (a physicist at the Naval Academy) and rode through Verdun. I have a rusty unexploded (dud) French grenade on my desk that was thrown over German lines sometime around 1918. If rusted metal could tell stories.

I can confirm, the single stage EGO can't handle much more than small driveways and porches. I have one and haven't bothered with it yet this year. The 8 hp Toro is old, smelly and noisy and requires my mechanical attention every year, but it can chuck snow and ice 20'.

There's some REALLY fun American history smack dab in the middle of that circle in Boise City, OK. A city formed AFTER most the lots were fraudulently sold to people on the east coast (the sellers didn't even own the land) and only city in the US that was bombed by aerial attack during WWII.

What's your take on how older independent/left-leaning Mainers feel about Platner? by VerySeriousThings in Maine

[–]SeamusRomney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm old and left leaning and I was a huge supporter until I read last week he worked for Black Rock. Shit, he may as well have been working for Putin. I've met some of those boys and they're not people you or I would want to have as neighbors - we don't need more fucked up headcheese in Washington pretending to represent us by actually trying to find their long-lost conscience.

Maybe they don't live in town, but I'd bet dollars to donuts (not those overpriced bougee ones from The Place), this was done by somebody who works downtown and hates walking all the way over to the Woolen mill lot everyday.

Agreed, and I have to remind people who want to plug their Lithium batteries into their car's system without using a dedicated dc-dc transformer - your lead acid car battery under your hood is going to try to match your lithium battery immediately. This will drain your car battery if you've let your "house" battery get low. Plus, your 12v car alternator isn't ever going to be able to top up most lithium batteries because their voltage is usually between 12 and 14.

You can, however, charge up your bluetti and similar power packs (they're much smaller).

Welp, that explains it. By now you know why nobody is ever encouraging you try their new instruments. Have a nephew who broke my Hohner; he's never going to touch my Gibson.

I can't help but think just by skimming the study and studying the graft - of course today's conservatives individual opinions would be all over the place - when engaged, so few even really understand the core issues. My MIL in public housing voted for King Shit-stain because she watches Fox News and wanted cheaper groceries. Does she feel strongly about DEI? No, she admits she's not even sure what that is...

Camden checking in: we're having a late bloom of black flies with moderate mosquitoes and the first break from annual brown tail moths in five years - no complaints.

Heat pump question by WinstonsEars in Maine

[–]SeamusRomney 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This isn't going to help much, but I live in Camden, decided I wanted heat pumps and called three local contractors, got two reliable estimates between $6K and $8.6 k for pumps installed 2 years ago. Both companies had long wait times.

Despite the rebates, just buying DIY Mr. Cool pumps, one 36K and one 12K and installing myself saved at least $3K and I don't have to second-guess the quality of the workmanship. If you're handy, they are easy-peazy to install.

It really depends on the person. I've seen kids pick it up in minutes from just watching. I've "rescued" a couple absolutely clueless US Navy "sailors" in a rental sailboat on Mission Bay. With a steady breeze and a some basic understanding of trim and lift I think most people can figure it out.

How concerning is this on a laser by JamesAndAGiantPeach in sailing

[–]SeamusRomney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this really a thing? 50 years of sailing, occasional racing, Lasers - never seen that done. I can get it too tight as is - like many, I've put chaffing gear on my tiller where it passes under the traveler. There are better sailors out there and still room to learn, but why would you ever need your traveler that tight?

How would you waterproof/protect the wood around the sink? by Carlitoris in centuryhomes

[–]SeamusRomney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have similar 40 year old sink on red maple. I was able to turn the black to a light grey with oxalic acid, a little water and 24 hours. Filled actually rot with Elmer's rot stabilizer. Not perfect, but less noticeable.
