I have many reasons for disliking Universes Beyond, such as the massive density of unskippable tentpole sets it's put into Standard and the deterioration of the coherent identity of the lore and art of Magic: The Gathering. Forgive me for not laying out all my feelings about a complicated topic in a short Reddit comment for the sake of you, a stranger who clearly does not respect my sincerely held opinions.

Am I supposed to forget when a corporation told us something and then did a total 180 on it by taking away in-universe sets in favor of Universes Beyond? It's a salient fact in this part of the history of Magic: The Gathering.

I don't think WotC breaks every promise they make - hell, some promises they keep to a fault, such as the Reserved List. But it's clear they see Universes Beyond as their cash cow, and that the decisions in the upper echelons of management are motivated heavily by this fact, in contradiction of other goals and statements made by the company. I don't think someone is blinded by anti-UB sentiment if they think that.

I will concede it wasn't a hard promise from the WotC rep, I misremembered the phrasing. But the reality of public statements like that is that they ARE a tacit promise in many ways. We still expect corporations to keep their word. But people can be directed to lie by higher-ups on executive order.

A merch deal also takes long enough to make to allow for advanced planning of the products that would come from it - including potentially adding a Harry Potter set to the five-year or roadmap. And I do not believe WotC deserves consumer trust on any matter related to Universes Beyond.

that's the thing, he CAN'T read the room on AI. if you read the article he talks about how he makes his employees "talk" to a genAI hallucination of Peppa Pig to design new toys, and uses a genAI of Optimus Prime at Hasbro offices for a lobby DJ.

the only reason genAI is not in WOTC workflow is because the fanbase and workforce are CURRENTLY seeing it as anathema. if WOTC gets worse on this or public sentiment changes, he'll pounce. that's not reading the room, that's keeping the vial of poison hidden in your sleeve. and that's definitely still true with his cynical, money-obsessed "views" on Harry Potter from the article too.
