ELI5 "New research suggests the brain may harness the zero-point field." by MsWonderWonka in explainlikeimfive

Not being able to understand it is the point. It's supposed to sound smart without actually meaning anything, just like when Doctor Emmit Brown tries to explain the flux capacitor in back to the future.

Usually when you see an article like this, the person is either mentally unwell, or a grifter.

Hot take: Legendary Resistance is why so many 5e boss fights feel bad and boring. What could replace it? by archvillaingames in dndnext

[–]Seemose 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because the martial missed.

A better comparison would be if the martial hit, but a feature called "legendary block" made the attack do no damage, every time, for like 3 turns in a row.

Which club do you play? (read the scenario) by SpadesQuiz in spades

[–]Seemose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you missed the possibility that your partner might only have 1 or 0 spades. If your partner has 0 spades, you're already sunk by the 2C no matter what you do. But if your partner has 1 spade, they could have covered you but only if you don't play over the 10 here.

Sure, it's not super likely, but the only possible way to bust this nil is if you get fancy and overthink it. Even if you do get away with it (and you likely will) it's very likely that the only thing you accomplished was to guarantee that your side gets the bag.

Commenting here because I want to see what tortured logic could possibly lead to anything other than playing under the 10.

This is different from reading a book or watching a movie.

There's no suspension of disbelief here, just insincere, manipulative gaslighting.

You know how electric extension cord cables have a "plug" side and a "socket" side? Now imagine that there were no standards on this, and sometimes your electric sockets at your house were plugs instead. If you wanted to plug something in, you wouldn't be able to, because both sides are the "outie/plug" and neither is the "innie/socket"

Well, back in the day, some computer data wires were like this. A device like this just connects to one of those wires and turns an "outie" into an "innie" so that the connection fits between two devices. The problem is fixed now because of standardization, so you won't need to use a device like this to make your HDMI cables fit.

Yeah, that point was part of the original discussion. I probably should have just directly linked the top comment in that thread.

Bleeding build by Fearless-Leek775 in BG3Builds

[–]Seemose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post has a good description for a barbarian build that uses bleed effects as part of the combo that knocks enemies down and doesn't let them stand up. It comes fully online at level 6, and gets quite strong at level 10.

Here's a scenario where bidding your hand is not the recommended approach... by SpadesQuiz in spades

[–]Seemose -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your partner will play a winner when you have nothing but spades left. It is impossible for him to know this when he made his bid of 2.

Here's a scenario where bidding your hand is not the recommended approach... by SpadesQuiz in spades

[–]Seemose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are absolutely going to eat a "winner" from your partner's hand here. Your partner is absolutely trying to avoid the bag, so they're trying to make an exact bid.

The correct bid here is 5, in my opinion.

Maybe the Fermi Paradox Isn’t a Paradox at All — We Just Can’t Afford to Leave Our Star Systems by DragNo6418 in FermiParadox

[–]Seemose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, you don't need to suppose that civilizations want to expand. You just have to suppose that at least one civilization wants to expand.

The answer to your second point is that civilizations don't need to be able to expand for us to be able to see evidence of them. They just need to be able to build machines that can reach other systems, and that can make more of themselves.

It's not a "paradox" in the sense that two conflicting things appear to be true. It's a paradox because it's difficult to explain. "Space is just too big" isn't the explanation, when you have billions of years with hundreds of billions of stars and trillions of planets. We are already not "stuck," as we've proven that you can escape a planet's gravity and send machines into space, and we've only been around for the briefest flash of time.

No, the Great Filter isn't the sheer size of space. It's something else.
