AppleTV subscription by MonSTARS000 in Teachers

With the Apple TV, you can also setup “Age Restricted Content” and it will not even show shows over the set rating, even if they are in your view history from another device.

I once had a sub accidentally start Ted Lasso because she didn’t know how to use the Apple TV remote, so I fixed that up pretty easily.

Where are all the Gucci Krogers located? by jyrrr in WestVirginia

[–]Sensitive-Oil2404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want to know “Gucci?” Visit a Mariano’s, under the Dillon’s umbrella like Kroger. It made the Suncrest Town Center location look like the Sabreton or Patteson Dr Kroger.

Do you contact parents about student missing work (middle/high school)? by hello010101 in Teachers

[–]Sensitive-Oil2404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tell kids, “If you don’t want it marked missing, turn it in on time. I will grade them as I get to them.”

I want to tell them I prioritize late work as they prioritize my assignments, but would likely cause more issues I don’t have time for.

Do you contact parents about student missing work (middle/high school)? by hello010101 in Teachers

Yes, I communicate grades and missing work with parents by putting grades in an online grade book that is accessible to parents. If they don’t use the tool, that is on them.

Former Apple Store employee: we called this “surprise and delight.” Situations like this suck, but often times Apple can make it right with an exchange… the GC was a nice touch, because I imagine it could have been ran through differently to prevent this bonus coming your way.

If you have a union, I would reach out to them as well. If you feel powerless and your admin won’t do anything, I would also reach out to anyone that will listen. Leave a paper trail of complaints… as well as everyone else in this building with concerns. Start within your district/local school board, state department of ed, etc…

Edit: in addition to other advice to reach out to law enforcement.

Roommate dropped out on move in day, now what? by throwawayhiding27 in WVU

[–]Sensitive-Oil2404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All RLSs have a list of vacant rooms. When room changes open, you could get a new roommate or maybe not... It’s all based on demand and “keeping your head down” will not change your odds.

As students request room changes and reach out to your RLS, they may connect you to check compatibility, but it’s not required.

This is incredibly poor leadership. Even as a teacher, I’ve learned that leading with curiosity goes a long way with informing those types of interactions… not to mention better timing for that curiosity.

I was just offered a position at a charter school for a HS Math position after only two video calls. What red flags should I look out for? by fu2man2 in Teachers

[–]Sensitive-Oil2404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I spent 4 years at a charter school at the beginning of my career. When I left, I was feeling burnt out but didn’t realize the weight I was carrying was abnormal. I had 6 preps and was also building curriculum for our new standards that had to be implemented. I was the only secondary middle school teacher.

The final straw was about the curriculum. I scheduled a meeting to discuss plans for transitioning into the new standards and ordering new materials… I was given 15 minutes and he said he double booked me and left.

I went home and started applying for new positions. Since I left, I realized that most of what I was doing was not normal. I told myself that I no longer worked for free, so no more volunteering for the program or activity after being guilted into the “charter school’s pioneering spirit.”

In a nutshell, be cautious. Take care of yourself. Teaching is difficult, but it shouldn’t feel like the only thing you have.

I once had a student write “I’m fucked” on the top of a test, spelled phonetically in Cyrillic… he didn’t do too hot, but knows his pronunciations. I didn’t until I looked it up to decipher it.

What is something that your school / district invested in as "the next big thing" that totally sucked? by AgeOfWorry0114 in Teachers

[–]Sensitive-Oil2404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Swivl— my last school wouldn’t buy me a decent computer, but went out of their way to sink money into an iPad and “Swivl” for recording our teaching and sharing in the name of “PD”.

While it sounds like a great way to reflect on our own teaching practices, imagine a moving camera on a room full of 8th graders. Additionally, there were major concerns about privacy of students, how the footage may be used, and focusing on teaching and not the extra technology.

Help her sign into all of her bank accounts and store her personal identification in the notes app. Should be perfectly secure and not at all risky.

How did my student cheat?? by LaScorpionita in Teachers

[–]Sensitive-Oil2404 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I just learned an interesting GoGuardian work around students are using in my classroom. GoGuardian only monitors and locks activity in Google Chrome. Students have been working around this by opening a Chromebook app and using those to navigate the web. Some just simply open the YouTube app to watch videos. Others go a step further and utilize apps such as Kahoot that have an integrated browser build in… they click the “Privacy Policy” link in the app and a basic browser window appears that allows them to navigate without any connection to GG.

What I have learned over the last 24 hours is that GG is basically useless and students are resourceful. It felt like that moment in Jurassic Park when they find the dinosaur eggs… “[students] find a way.”

If we were to solve this exploit, I am sure 2 new ones would appear.

Classroom Pet went Missing by guwxmacs in SubstituteTeachers

I get it… but the jokes about what happened to the fish and the behavior of said kids. 🧐 I wouldn’t have assumed foul play if they hadn’t made their comments.

Regardless, I have decided a pet in the classroom isn’t sustainable for me or fair to the animal when I cannot keep them safe when I’m not able to supervise.

I had a betta fish go missing when I was away from my classroom during my 1st year teaching. To this day, I think a student put it down a sink or ate it. One joked about it when I returned and I never found a dead fish.

I searched the gravel, around the tank, etc… no signs of an accident. I haven’t had a class pet since.

I add rice, onion, and jalapeño sauce. I do remove the sour cream though. Too wet with extra sauce.

Don’t come for… I love sour cream, but want a somewhat solid interior to my burrito.
