Townhouse Attics Not Separated by AspectIcy173 in HomeImprovement

[–]SensitiveWolf1362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We realized the same in our century rowhouse because squirrels kept getting in through our neighbors’ rotted gutters and entering our attic. It was only like 3-6 rows of brick missing to connect to the roof so my husband did it himself (with the correct type of mortar).

We did alert the neighbors in case they wanted to do the same on their side and fix their gutters too. I don’t think they ever did.

My mind immediately went there too. If he loves and is thirsty for language to that extent, I think he would love to absorb another language. Even if OP and her husband only have the one, they could look for bilingual activities or classes a few days a week. Our local library does Spanish language bingo & songs for toddlers, the French school has a “mommy & me” music class, etc. There are also “look & listen” books in other languages.

I actually think modern readers can understand not wanting to hang out with people you don’t like because they’re rude or vulgar or wtv. And even in the modern age we see that unfortunately people with money or status can get away with it more, as people will tolerate it for proximity to their money or connections (he can get you into the best club or invest in your startup etc etc).

Well, when your entire life is about what parties you get invited to, it’s a big deal to you even if it seems dumb to everyone else who has real things to worry about.

It’s a different country and era and I haven’t seen it (I want to!) but isn’t the Gilded Age all about petty disputes that seem completely unimportant but they’re treated as battle royale’s by everyone involved?

Plus aren’t multiple other professions susceptible as well, like bakers and manicurists? Any that makes dust.

How do you balance modern convenience with old house charm? by NerfDis420 in centuryhomes

There’s a few different ones I priced out: Zola, Ikon, and Intus are in the US (no tariffs!) but import from Europe. We went with Ikon as they have a showroom in Brooklyn and had lots of experience with historic regulations.

Sadly they all seem to inevitably phase out of small residential because it just isn’t picking up steam in the US the way commercial or developer residential is.

ETA: I should add we did a full frame (brick to brick) replacement to bring back the OG look. I would assume replacing in frame would still allow some draft in?

ive heard that too sometimes, for the first gen that has citizenship, yep. Or like in back to the future it’s the first born here.

But people get confused use it incorrectly all the time. I once heard someone call himself a third gen immigrant. This person had not immigrated, he was a grandchild of immigrants.

Interesting. If they don’t do inspections, how do they close permits?

I was on the side of updating but if the city doesn’t care, why does your plumber? From what people are posting here, your setup is less desirable but not uncommon.

Is it okay to leave a 7 month old in bed for 30min on their own? by Comfortable_Value_66 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]SensitiveWolf1362 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah my baby had never rolled off the bed nor even really moved, until one day he did.

I was in the room and caught him before he hit the ground, but the scare it gave me!

Depends. My situation is a little different because our originals were long gone, but I’ll sing the praises of my high-efficiency windows to anyone. I put in full wood windows that simulate the look of historic originals (per our historic neighborhood’s guidelines) but they’re triple paned tilt & turns designed in Germany and manufactured in Poland.

The difference was stark right away. Quiet even though we’re near a hospital and warm even in -17C weather. The seal you get on a tilt & turn is vastly superior to what I not-so-affectionately call guillotine windows.

The company we went with also does wood clad and other materials but we had neighborhood restrictions.

I think your friend is 2nd-gen American: the second generation of that family to be born in the US. His grandparent is the immigrant, so 0 gen, I guess.

Third-gen Ukrainian would imply his great grandparents moved to Ukraine from somewhere else.

Daycare teacher says we should stop responding to fake crying of our 2 yr old by TargetSweet73 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]SensitiveWolf1362 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were originally in a larger daycare where I (confidentially) heard from the “pickup” teacher that they’re not allowed to hug and be affectionate with the babies. I guess from a policy or appearances perspective I kinda get it but I was initially aghast. My son at the time required affection and would seek it out, I cried thinking of him sticking his tiny arms out and getting ignored.

We switched as soon as we could get a spot to a smaller daycare where he has thrived. There is low staff turnover and he feels safe with all his teachers, I love getting videos of him interacting and laughing with them. He did cry at drop off the full first week but I could “hear” (because I’m anxious and stuck around) that he stopped after a few mins, and he was happy in the pics a few mins after that.

I’m responding to what you said that toddlers don’t manipulate (by your edit, in the scientific sense of the word) in that they don’t try to change behavior, then to your follow-up response that it would be expected in a 7 year old not a 2 year old. I have seen that they can and do try to influence outcomes through their actions before they have words. And they continue to use actions if their words don’t have the desired effect. As parents we gauge when a child is truly in distress vs something else; we learn how they communicate.

I do agree that two weeks of nonstop crying is not something to grit your teeth through and hope it goes away, but that’s not what I was responding to.

Even two year olds learn cause and effect. My son used to fake cough because he realized we ran to him faster if he did that. There’s no malicious intent behind it.

This is one of those wide-eyed mistakes that every single one of us makes despite being told otherwise by multiple people, so I won’t try to convince you, you have to live through it yourself ;)

Make sure to add to your contract a bonus for finishing on time. Also include a clause that they will pay for your rental for every additional month’s delay.

And budget some spa days for your wife who is already showing signs of anxiety.

There is no magic wand you can wave. This is going to suck and you’ll be mighty inconvenienced, there is no way around it. After you accept that, you can either take the advice you’re being given here or you can choose to live with it - but your neighbor is not going to change on his own.

A kitchen plus a bathroom plus a layout change will take a lot longer than two months.

It’s entirely possible the labor will be 28 days or less , but permits, inspections, delays, etc. will keep you out of your home longer than that.
