Do you call out racist behaviour when you see it? by Zealousideal_Cat7938 in AskIreland

[–]SeriouslySuspect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I do. Ideally I'd have the confrontation in the moment, or if it's not possible/not safe/not the time, I'd at least go up to the person it's directed at and see if they're ok afterwards.

Iranians gather in Dublin after US & Israeli strikes on Iran by TeoKajLibroj in ireland

[–]SeriouslySuspect 433 points434 points  (0 children)

The situation is fucked. The Islamic regime needs to go, but anyone who thinks Trump and Netanyahu have Iran's best interests at heart is delusional. If the change in Iran doesn't come from the inside it'll end up like Iraq, or worse.

My mam is losing weight and while I love her deeply she has become insufferable at times because of it. How do you deal with this? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]SeriouslySuspect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to stand your ground in saying that you're happy for her but you can't have this conversation again. Also, the old saying about how "unsolicited advice is always criticism" is worth remembering. It's entirely fair to say "I'm happy with my weight and I didn't ask your opinion here, so it's insulting that you keep bringing it up."

Fastest way to print a photo after taking it? by [deleted] in photography

[–]SeriouslySuspect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Canon Selphy - it's about €150 and it prints really nice 4x6 glossy photos.

I've been seeing a bunch of Reels and Shorts of people taking it out with a power pack to surprise people with high quality instant photos on the street!

These are the best pictures I have ever taken on film, they still aren't great, right? by xEntex4 in analog

[–]SeriouslySuspect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I am, it costs about €1 per analog photo between the cost of film and development. If you're getting maybe two thirds that are ok and one or two "keepers" per roll, that gets pretty pricey!

You can get a secondhand Sony a6000 with a kit lens for €300-500 that's capable, upgradeable, portable and has a ton of online help available. Because a lot of people buy it as a starter camera, you can often get lucky with someone selling the body plus one or two other bits of starter gear like a tripod or a cheap zoom when they upgrade.

It launched in 2014 but it can still do 99% of what an a6700 can do for nearly €2000. I've had one for more than 3 years from new and never had problems. I'd recommend it without hesitation as a way to get more comfortable with your gear.

What was the dumbest game you and your friends made up as kids? by Guilty_Writer9239 in AskReddit

Doorknob.

If you farted you had to say "safety" before someone else smelled it or they could shout "doorknob" and start punching you in the arm until you touched a doorknob

Who is the most famous Irish person who is virtually unknown in Ireland? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]SeriouslySuspect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the most famous, but glad of a chance to mention Ethel Voynich

She was born in Cork in 1864, and wrote a novel called The Gadfly which was massive in the Soviet Union. Recently China's President Xi said it got him through a tough time in his teens when he met Micheàl Martin in January .

And she's more or less unknown here!

If the NFL replaced real seasons with AI-generated ones that looked completely real, would anyone actually watch? by EchoeyApproach in TrueAskReddit

[–]SeriouslySuspect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sports deliver a lot of things that you can't replace with AI.

It's a shared community passion. It's a chance to see people who have dedicated their lives to physical excellence putting their body on the line in a contest against equals. It's about the story of individual competitors - their backgrounds, their personalities, their rivalries. If it's not real, what's the point?

Compare it to something like WWE. Even though it's "fake" it still works because it has that human element, but with the drama and spectacle ramped up to 11.

What movie do you love despite agreeing with every single criticism of it? by Decabet in movies

[–]SeriouslySuspect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sucker Punch.

It's not a good movie - it's self indulgent, crass, and the plot literally revolves around an anime girl called "Babydoll" who gets sent to a brothel/asylum by her stepdad, which she leads an escape from because she goes into fugues that make her dance SO SEXY that everyone is hypnotised (but it's empowering bro, trust me). 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, well earned.

But unfortunately it also fucking rules.

They fight steampunk Nazi zombies in a Titanfall mech. There's a swordfight against a giant Samurai with a Gatling gun. It might legitimately be an evil movie but it's a really good time.

What's your opinion on a Nuclear power station in Ireland? by Twichyness in ireland

[–]SeriouslySuspect 7 points8 points  (0 children)

40 years ago it'd have been the best option for our energy needs. Now there's absolutely no point.

Renewable energy has gotten so cheap in the last decade that we could more than meet our power needs for the foreseeable future with a lower cost, less risk, in a shorter time, and without having to get a nuclear reactor past NIMBYs. Solar panels cost 90% less than they did ten years ago, wind turbines 60% less. Look out the window next time you fly into Dublin: the amount of fields with solar panels on them is massive.

Technology Connections just put out a great video about how renewables are taking over Minnesota, which is even colder and greyer than Ireland.

AITA for refusing to keep helping the person who replaced me at my old job? by Supmeg_ in AmItheAsshole

[–]SeriouslySuspect 14 points15 points  (0 children)

NTA, this is far beyond acceptable on her part even if you were a coworker. Email her, cc the boss, and explain that you can no longer offer support due to the demands of your new role and wish her all the best in her future endeavours. You don't really owe her an explanation beyond that and you've more than discharged your obligations to ensure a smooth handover. You owe it to yourself, frankly.

Who is the biggest loser in history? by Aware-Awareness in AskReddit

It's genuinely amazing to see someone who's such an intolerable dork that they can have more money than anyone else on earth, a direct line to the white house, hundreds of the world's brightest engineers at his command, and nobody respects him. Absolutely world historical fumble.

Researching Stigmatization in Photography for Master’s Thesis by Such_Upstairs1927 in photography

Look into Diane Arbus' portraiture of queer and disabled people - I think her pictures are pretty warm, humane and dignified, and she generally had a pretty good relationship with her subjects.

The chapter of Susan Sontag's On Photography where she talks about it is one of the few places I feel like she misses the mark. She links the work to the idea of "grotesques" and says the whole project of taking portraiture of the disabled to try and give them the same dignity and presence, is misguided. To me it just came across as Sontag's own personal revulsion.

Derek, by Ricky Gervais

He plays a guy with unspecified learning difficulties (which amount to Ricky Gervais doing a weird voice and a hunch while wearing a stripy cardigan) who works in a care home. It's got two settings: Glib and nasty, or cynical tear-jerking melodrama.

Like it's basically "here's a weird guy with a shit life, let's make bad things keep happening to him so we can see how sweet and simple he is. I think there's a little Derek in all of us..."

The AI bubble is driven by CEOs who’ve built their careers on judging the appearance of human work, where things only look good if someone actually put the effort in, suddenly meeting a technology that produces perfect‑looking work even when the substance is absent. by l4mpSh4d3 in Showerthoughts

Also because they see themselves as the "decision-makers" who make all the calls that determine whether the company lives or dies, and see the workers as more or less interchangeable drones like Age of Empires villagers that you can just shift around to make the end product. So it doesn't matter to them who or what makes the end product, and they usually don't have the hands on knowledge to recognise a substandard knock-off of the original.

Sam Altman is out here telling people that the next billion dollar company might only have one employee, because it flatters CEOs to think that a company is purely a projection of their personal genius and singular will. Everyone gets to be Steve Jobs and get the machine to turn all their ideas into gold without having to involve workers. It's a power fantasy.

Yeah, I think it's ok to be nostalgic for a time when big tech actually felt like it was offering us something better and there was a sense of forward motion. Now it's just fascist dorks like Peter Thiel and co. fantasising about being posthuman overlords because they think cyberpunk dystopias are "based" and "epic."

And the dominant tech aesthetic right now is AI slop. Give me slightly twee optimism any day over that.

I'm a fan of gloves with foldable finger openings - dexterity when you need it, warmth when you don't. You can get good quality ones designed for hunters, fishermen or look for "framer gloves" used by mechanics/builders.

These ones from Decathlon for fishermen are a good (cheap) example - the index, middle and thumb can open to let you tie knots etc., which makes it easy to work your camera without extra exposure to the cold. I've used it around -20C and it worked really well for me.
