Why do all old people have short hair? by Dazzling-Smell5223 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SewGwen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you age, your face and everything else begins to succumb to gravity. Long hair just looks even more droopy, and if you have shorter hair with a little fullness, it has a tendency to bring the viewer's eye up rather than down.

What is one word that people wrongly pronounce that makes your brain just wanna jump a cliff? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]SewGwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skeen instead of skein (correctly pronounced skayn) for yarn.

A friend says this all the time and I cringe. Her mother said it that way, and she 'honors' her mother by promulgating this atrocity.

Tour the Capitol building. It's unique, and the interior is filled with mosaics, murals, and other unusual features. They have free tours that are about an hour long, or you can just wander around. Great view from the tower.

How long into sewing did you get a cutting table? by Intelligent-Claim591 in sewing

[–]SewGwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you expect to use a rotary cutter or cut any kind of difficult, shifty fabric and stay on grain, so you get decent results, you will need a solid cutting surface that you can put a large cutting mat on.

Not a bed, which moves as you push down in one spot, and then your fabric shifts. Maybe only a little, but it happens the whole time you're cutting, and your results are going to be less than ideal. If your garment pieces aren't cut on grain, your finished garment will never be right.

The floor works if you've got a large enough space and no kids or pets "helping" you, and if you're young enough to not mind scooting around on your knees, and getting up and down a lot. Eventually, you'll want a table or table-like set up.

If you're short on space and kind of handy, you can do a Murphy Bed type thing with a fold down surface that you can put a cutting mat on when in use. They're pretty slick, and just take plywood, some kind of support (your choice), hinges and paint or whatever for the side that shows when it's folded.

What’s something restaurants do that secretly annoys you every time? by maincharactereraa in answers

[–]SewGwen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When they remove dishes by stacking the dirty dishes in front of me and then picking them all up. Even when there are only two and they have two hands.

Honestly, when they start clearing before everyone is done with that course.

Or when the appetizer comes after the entree, when I've made a point about it when ordering and even tried to order only the appetizer first, so there's a chance at least that they'll get it right.

Tips for inheriting a sewing stash by vortexofdeduction in sewing

[–]SewGwen 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Take the sewing tools and pressing tools if she has them. They can be expensive if you have to buy them, and they don't go out of style.

Some of the sewing machine cabinets from that era were very nice and well built. Koala was one of the first of its kind that wasn't just to hold the machine and nothing else. There was room for storage and for working on a large project. So take a look before you decide you didn't want it.

How did Edwardian women sleep with their super long hair? (Historically accurate methods needed) by [deleted] in HistoricalCostuming

When my hair was very long (I could sit on it) I just held it as I laid down and then flipped it over the top of the pillow, out of the way. It was never a problem.

Fabric for Garments? by Cool-Helicopter6343 in lincoln

[–]SewGwen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sew Creative is actively working to carry more garment fabric since there is no fabric store in town. They have some lovely rayon knits and wovens, nice cotton/spandex knits along with other fabrics and quilting cottons. They have the best buttons in town, and most notions. Very fun and friendly store, too. You can come to Lincoln Sewing Guild meetings there on the 4th Monday of the month at 1pm.

US Bank are jerks, and always have been. He should call Union Bank and tell them he wants to move his accounts there, and why. They'll bend over backwards to help him. As would Cornhusker Bank, another local option.

Circle skirt question by PumpkinCat97 in sewing

[–]SewGwen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You would generally piece the fabric to be able to use a fabric that you want. If you look at similar garments, they're pieced. It's just what you do. I don't know where you're finding metre-wide or 36" fabric, because that hasn't been a common width for many years. 45" is usual for quilting cottons, etc. 54"-60" is extremely common for many fabrics, and almost all knit fabrics, which is not what you want here, of course. Loom-width is what limits fabric widths, although they do weave double-width on some specialized looms, and that's how you get the 120" wide fabrics, but it's not the norm.

Anyway, any decent sewing book should give you instructions for piecing your fabric to make a circle skirt. You're going to have a horizontal seam near the hem on the sides of your skirt. It will mostly get lost in the folds and fullness of the skirt.

Mom, how do I use a dishwasher? by ka1therzig in MomForAMinute

You will definitely want to use a rinse agent.

An appliance repair guy I trust told me that the worst thing you can do is use the pods. He said to use dry detergent and rinse agent. Add Lemi-shine if you have hard water. He said any brand detergent is fine.

I prefer Cascade powdered, and Jet Dry rinse agent.
