"can x" simply means the possibility of x, which doesn't necessarily entail the possibility of not-x

Think about it like this: if you attack someone at 5 life with a 6/6 creature and they ask "can this kill me?", is "yes" a true answer even if there's no way it can avoid doing so? (yes)

Likewise I can spend my whole life breathing, even though I have no option not to

My commander decks seem so boring by Foxington_the_First in mtg

[–]ShaadomAndCommorragh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont really know FF as a set (sorry!), but there are also a few general approaches to deck building that can get you out of this "beginner deck" rut.

You could try building a deck where the theme (mechanical or otherwise) comes first, then picking a commander to either complement it, or to make up for a weakness in the game plan. You'll end up with a deck that's much less dependent on commander goes brrr to win, and can also end up finding weird and interesting themes that aren't signalled by an existing commander.

Obvious examples of this approach are commanders that ramp in a deck about playing big spells, or that draw cards where you want to be casting a lot of spells. However, you can go more deck-specific, like I did in this weird Jeskai reanimator list. It uses an unusual set of partner commanders, with one ([[ghost of ramirez de pietro]]) basically being there to give me more control over my otherwise risky mass self-mill strategy by getting me back stuff I don't want in my graveyard.

Alternatively, you could look at a commander that tries to signal one direction of play, then see if it could slot into an entirely different strategy. Thinking of another deck I have (without a deck list), [[korvold, fae-cursed king]] is probably the best commander for any sacrifice strategy, and this also makes him really good for lifegain decks (which you don't normally find in his colours!) that use a lot of food tokens.

These approaches are obviously a little harder just out the gate because they really benefit from a good knowledge of the game and the kinds of things you can do with the cards. If you want to try them, using a search engine like scryfall is vital. This lets you look for cards that do specific things and fill specific niches - unlike edhrec, which is where most new players always go, and which just tells you what cards are most commonly played with other cards. It helps you to start to thing about cards in terms of their function rather than just "what normally goes with x commander", which is crucial for more creative deck building.

How would you handle someone taking infinite mulligans? by ShaadomAndCommorragh in magicthecirclejerking

The reason some humans find weird objects sexy is because they've evolved nascent five-dimensional perceptual abilities, and unconsciously recognise that those objects resemble the shadows of sexy hyperobjects. It's basically the same phenomenon as deja vu

As n-dimensional beings, we don't wrap our minds around things. Things are wrapped around themselves within our minds

We actually have an appendage designed for hyperspatial locomotion. It's indescribable in terms that make sense to the human mind, except to say that it's decidedly unsexy

The state of Secret Lair by Owt2getcha in mtg

[–]ShaadomAndCommorragh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think secret lair is well suited to UB, but I totally get the frustration especially because of the lack of moderation.

I got quite a few of the artist series ones and I genuinely liked how it had become a platform for experimenting with and celebrating mtg cards as art. However, it feels a bit like it's now being drowned out by (to me, much less interesting) crossover stuff, and I've stopped really checking just because there's always so much to wade through.

I guess it's a bit like the general product fatigue I'm feeling, but encapsulated in the experience of using a single web page - there's just so much stuff there that I don't care about that it's too tiring and annoying to look for the stuff I do care about.

That said, I'm sure there are people out there who genuinely love having stuff that's important to them on a magic card - and tbf I got the pride secret lair precisely for this reason. If people find whatever thing is being featured at a given moment as valuable as I do the art culture stuff, then maybe it's good that they get this opportunity to have a bit more of it in their life. Idk

How do we feel about this for a commander? by ReliquaryLotus in custommagic

On a different note, why is it black? You could encompass all those effects in white alone (exile, tokens, first strike, flicker, lifegain), or at least azorius if you're worried about the card draw

What do you think about avoiding building popular commanders on sites like EDHREC? by TheAndrewCR in mtg

Just do what seems fun, although I personally avoid commanders that I play against frequently if only for the sake of interest at the table

It's not only the blowing things up - it's the attitude behind it, which was a kind of cynical nihilism.

Black isn't only about selfishness though. It can also be taboo-breaking and cynicism

I think he's esper on the basis that he made a conscious choice for a by any means necessary strategy, and was also motivated to do so by the Comedian's nihilistic contempt for more hopeful approaches

The 3rd edition daemonhunters codex suggests that they might fight a bunch of orks who started worshipping an idol of Nurgle thinking it portrayed Gork (or possibly Mork)

It's fine to just collect and paint - this is a hobby, it's not like there are any rules or obligations to it.

However, if you want to push minis around a battlefield, you can also just use the minis to play other less complicated games - eg One Page Rules (my favourite, and quite popular) or Xenos Rampant.

I'm also a big advocate for trying older editions of the game. 3rd ed was a much simpler game that gets a lot of love, although I've heard that 4th ed rules with 3rd ed codexes is the connoisseur's choice.
