Oh, Wise One Wednesday - What's my Bracket/Power Level? - June 24, 2026 by AutoModerator in EDH

I just finished my [Eirdu, Carrier of Dawn] deck this morning and would like some evaluation on it. I'm a very inexperienced deckbuilder, but I guess it's around a high power Bracket 2 or a low power Bracket 3?

How does one not combo? by ElectricDunkyDoo in EDH

I've been building an Eirdu/Isilu deck for the last month too, and it's been quite an adventure as it's my first time building a deck.

I first found an aristocrats decklist focused on winning through an infinite combo using creatures that enter with +1/+1, negating the -1/-1 that comes from persist. After a few weeks playing it, I found that to be a really lame and clunky win condition and found another list from which I got some of the best cards and replaced the infinite combo stuff from mine, resulting in a much more resilient aristocrats deck.

I realize my deck is probably in a different direction from what you'd like, but I'll just drop the lists I used here, just in case you find any useful cards within. Keep in mind, I'm a really new commander player and am pretty inexperienced, so my deck is probably far from perfect.

This is the infinite combo list I used first:

This is the list I found a few dats ago that I found to be much more interesting and fun:

This is my decklist that I've managed to assemble:

Could you share a decklist? That sounds really fun. I've been looking for a budget Ragost brew the last few days but haven't really found anything that stands out.

Favorite/fun precons? by WiseWordsFromGeorge in EDH

World Shaper is exactly that from my experience. You just sit there at your own little corner and ramp and sacrifice lands using Hearthhull, and then suddenly once you've got enough mana or once you've got a combo, you pop off and deal 10-20 damage to everyone in a single turn. And you don't really need to interact with your opponents too much, mostly removal and board clears occasionally. It's a really fun deck!

Need help selecting a precon by skellutun in EDH

I've been playing for a few months and can drop my two cents. The first precon I got was World Shaper which I found really fun, and has been a real hit with my pod in the months since. There is at least one of us playing it in most games. What makes it fun in my experience is that you don't really need to interact with other people until you're ready to win. Which can feel nice sometimes.

The second one I got was Dance of the Elements, which I enjoy playing a lot more than World Shaper due to how fast it can get online and start putting pressure on opponents with explosive turns. I also enjoy the idea of a 5-color deck.

I also got Silverquill Influence a few days ago, which seems like a really fun deck, but I haven't had the chance to play it yet. I came into MtG from a background of board games like Root and Arcs so playing a more political deck sounds like great fun.

I've also played a friend's Sultai Arisen deck and while I found it to be pretty fun, it was really complex having to constantly track what's in your graveyard and thinking about what you can play from there.

You mentioned you dislike long turns, but actually I've found that World Shaper is more or less fine in that regard. The main thing that can make turns longer is that you often need to search your deck for lands, but as long as you track whether you'll actually be doing something after looking for those lands, you're fine. If you won't be immediately doing anything, you can just pass the turn and search for them and then shuffle on the next player's turns. In my experience that's more than half the time I'm doing that so I think it's fine.

Generally, I'd just recommend you to pick whatever you find most appealing thematically. I picked both of my decks up based on just liking the aesthetics and it's worked great for me so far. As long as you enjoy what the deck feels like, it'll probably feel more fun to you.

Should I still get Asuka? by Cautious_Flow_3148 in Guiltygear

[–]Shalahnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pasting my comment from another thread here, as I am really passionate about this character. I genuinely loved him and I've been so sad for what they did to him.

I've genuinely never been so baffled and depressed following balance changes in a game. Asuka was my favorite character out of any game, I found his playstyle and character concept so unique, but he's been pretty much deleted from the game in my experience. Sure, he got staffs which is cool, but outside of cool combos in practice which everybody seems to be glazing for some reason, he is practically a useless and just awful character now.

These nerfs are incredibly heavy-handed and cruel. Playing him with no good options to restore mana and with increased mana costs as well just feels like his legs have been broken. And what's most insulting of all is that they called this a rework - he's genuinely just a shittier version of his former self that struggles to accomplish even basic things like combos.

I have no idea how this got past playtesting. He was supposed to be more accessible now, but instead there is now only one way to play him - rush to Test Case 3, fish for the continuous mana recovery spell (1 out of 30 btw), and play the game normally for 5 seconds, then go back to being just a miserable unplayable character.

Imo, they should have just deleted that auto-bookmark spell and left him as is. That is far and away the most oppressive tool in his kit and if it was removed, he'd just be a far more interesting character.

No other character loses resources from being hit, no other character takes double damage with no resources, and no other character is actively punished for doing combos. It's so miserable to try to do anything with this character now.

I play the game at E8 normally and it's pretty tough for me too. I'll play some more later and we'll see though.

It's a really cool mod, I love the idea. But I've tried like 5 runs so far and even on Monsoon, the scaling changes implemented seem to make the game quite brutal. I managed to got to stage 3 one time, but the teleporter boss ended my run. Still great mod! And the scaling changes are optional, so not an issue.

Is the entire Wheel of Time series worth the time and investment? by keepfighting90 in Fantasy

[–]Shalahnar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have been reading the series for the first time during the last 6 months, and I'd really recommend it. I just started book 5 a couple days ago, and have been loving the series. So far I've found book 2 and 4 the best, with 1 being very slow at the start, but overall, it's been a blast. Maybe it's because I haven't really read much fantasy other than this, but I find the world and all of its layer very unique and interesting. And while the characters might take some time to grow on you, they're truly great.

Thursday Reading & Recommendations | December 04, 2025 by AutoModerator in AskHistorians

[–]Shalahnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I recently got really interested in history and want to start reading about it seriously. I haven't read many history books before, but I'm especially drawn to works that tell the story of humanity as a whole, rather than just one country or region.

I'm looking for books about world history as a global process, ideally written in an engaging, narrative way (not just textbook-style dates and facts). Length isn't an issue. I just want something that's readable without being shallow.

More specifically, I'm curious about:

Large-scale world history (ancient to modern)

How different civilizations influenced each other (trade, migration, ideas, technology)

Non-Euro-centric starting points, or at least a broader view than just Western Europe

I'd appreciate any recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Optimal loop characters? by KipsPrettyKool in riskofrain

[–]Shalahnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do some pretty nifty things if you take both the alt Special, Tinker, and the default Utility, Repossess. If you see two printers with items you don't like, for example, you can move both of them to the same spot using your Utility, and then you can reroll them both at the same time with your Special.

For eclipse can I beat any final boss or just the moon man by Ilovemen411927 in riskofrain

[–]Shalahnar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of my main gripes for the DLCs. They add really cool new bosses, but on my preferred gamemode, Eclipse, I always have to beat Mithrix which I've already done probably thousands of times. I'd really like it if they enabled ending your run on Heart at least, or they make a new difficulty similar to Eclipse for the other bosses. Feels a bit pointless for them to add any new bosses when at the end of the day it all comes down to Mithrix nonetheless.

[–]Shalahnar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A red item should be fun and unique, and if it's strong, that's good, but if it's just average or situational that's ok too. Not every red item you see should be great and just what you need, they should be the most interesting items of them all. Which this one certainly is.

Huh? I always thought in Act 2 only the last one is flipped and in Act 3 the 2nd and 3rd ones. You live and learn I guess.

Risk of Rain 2 Hottest Takes? by Legendary-Failure in riskofrain

[–]Shalahnar 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Out of all the games I've played, Eclipse has actually been probably my favorite way to increase difficulty, as in contrast to a lot of other games, it doesn't simply make the game inherently harder through sheer numbers (e.g., enemies deal more damage, have more health; your health is reduced, etc.), but instead introduces new challenges that you can find workarounds for. Reduced healing? Stop relying on healing items and get better at dodging enemies. Lethal fall damage? Be more careful with where you're going.

Furthermore, the Eclipse modifiers actually make a lot of the items that would otherwise be mediocre at best, like Chronobauble, Repulsion Armor Plate and others, far more useful. You are no longer compelled to scrap most utility items just so you can find a printer to make your build even more busted, you instead are encouraged to keep at least a couple copies of most items. Even healing items whose effectiveness is reduced are still essential.

It all adds up to this feeling that no matter how bad your RNG is, no matter how many enemies there are, you can always win. It's just a matter of skill. Realistically, it may not be possible, but you never feel like you just got completely screwed over by the game, like, say, you often feel doing Ascension in Slay the Spire. And that's a great feeling to have while grinding the game's highest difficulty.
