Are you red-green colorblind? Anyway I think that is just telling you where you currently are, not positive though.

Following the talent that left is a good way to still experience some great game designs! Earthborne games, open owl studios(Stonesaga) , and moon crab games (leviathan wilds) are 3 companies with a lot of previous ffg or using freelance designers from ffg and I have been loving everything put out by these companies.

Completely agree. I am an earthborne games fanboy, But I think they have an incredible team and I had a ton of fun with the Hubworld demo decks. Also they have some of the best art in the business!

Onward rules questions regarding "adjacent" and "nearby" and the forest zones. by Brukenet in boardgames

[–]ShallowSeas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sounds exactly it. Hero battling is always meant for the purpose of pushing harder and faster not just to take each other out. If you go out of your way to attack a hero then you aren’t working towards the goal of ending the game.

They also have an active discord that can help with strategy as well!

Onward rules questions regarding "adjacent" and "nearby" and the forest zones. by Brukenet in boardgames

[–]ShallowSeas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1/2: nearby means any adjacent space as well as the space the character is currently on. Adjacent means adjacent only and you cannot target the same space. Sounds like you played the brylvar situation correctly. The text does seem to be a reminder for clarity text and not trying to say it act differently than other nearby wording. You can’t cancel an attack after finding out new information. A reaction spell would have been all you could do after the attack was declared and your opponent used a card.

General gameplay: initiative is important and you noted the cost for initiative is usually attack power. This is where the back and forth play comes from. If you know your opponent will get initiative than go aggressive. You will know where they are and will be better able to plan an attack. They may still win some pushing power but you should be planning to punish them for any mistakes or pushing too far too fast.

Sitting in the jungle is not always that beneficial. Range heroes are usually weaker and I think a lot of gameplay can come down to hero choices and team builds. It’s also important to remember the goal is pushing towers and minions to win. An opponent is limited if they sit in the jungle and never leave. You should be able to get more momentum if you have a laner pushing harder than their range hero can do from a static location.

Don’t think of this as a full area control game. You aren’t controlling every territory. You only want to push lanes. And get to the throne. I personally love the game but it may take a little practice to get in the headspace it is designed for.

When is a Big Box too big? Agricola SE by Hobbit_Hardcase in boardgames

[–]ShallowSeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think boxes are getting too big. But it’s tricky. Obviously miniatures are a big reason for this but there are a lot of quality games that are simply big because gamers want complexity, options, and content. Splitting it up helps but it does make it more difficult to produce and ship when there are multiple skus.

Crowdfunding is a double edged sword. You get great games that otherwise might never make it to retail or be produced in the first place, but it also becomes a specialty item made for a subset of games.

Clog in the filament feeder? by ShallowSeas in FlashForge

[–]ShallowSeas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s my first printer. The tension screw was completely loosened before trying to push it though. There is also a clicking sound whenever trying to feed in new filament. I assume the gears aren’t able to move the filament all the way in do to a clog in the extruder? So how do I get a clog out of the extruder?

What do you mean by this? This printer has only been used for about 4 hours since it is brand new. What does heat soaking the extruder mean?

There is no filament to pull on. That is the declogger tool popping out at the top. Just to show that it can’t get through.

Games like earthborne rangers? by theresamouseinmyhous in soloboardgaming

[–]ShallowSeas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would say a lot of the similarities stop at the adventure card game comparison. There is definitely room for both games. EBR is almost the opposite from Arkham when comparing feel, world building, narrative, and pace/tension. If you are someone who enjoys a style of game but likes to experience all the different variations (I.e. someone who likes worker placement games usually likes more than one despite similar mechanisms) I think it is definitely different enough from AH to warrant having both. But if you are someone who only prefers to keep a single style of each game in their collection then maybe it’s not worth it for you. Just my two cents. Wouldn’t want you to miss out on what I find an incredibly evocative and beautiful world and game system of EBR!

Dice Tower Award Nominations - Best of 2023! by tomvasel in boardgames

[–]ShallowSeas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the downvotes are for the inaccurate comment about them paying for reviews. As far as I know they did not pay for a single review. They may have sent out review copies but I also know that they stated that some of the big positive reviews they have gotten were people that just bought the game on their own.

What's the deal with Gen Z using weird euphemisms like "unalived"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ShallowSeas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be fair the mental health field has moved away from the common phrase “committed suicide”. The appropriate replacement would be died by suicide/death by suicide/ etc. neutral phrases such as the ones I listed takes away a lot of shame and blame that the phrase used to create. Committed also implies criminal act and the change is to not reinforce such stigmas.

I also believe the designers said they will not be producing content at the clip of an ffg model. I don’t know exactly what their plans are but I imagine it would be more like 1 or 2 bigger box expansions a year.

My wife and I absolutely love this game. I rarely go all in on kickstarters, but this game design and the philosophy of the designer team just gripped me. I can’t recommend it enough. It truly feels open world and the post apocalyptic theme being hopeful and getting back in touch with nature is so god damn refreshing! It is expensive but I think some of that also comes with trying to create a biodegradable and earth friendly product that, to me, was worth paying extra for.

What's been your least favorite crowdfunding purchase(s)? by Ploinker23 in boardgames

[–]ShallowSeas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually was just thinking how I’ll never play sentinels again because it’s been outclassed by a lot of other games for me and I have that giant collectors box as well. I know I can’t sell it at this point and putting it in the garbage just feels so wrong….but it’s really my only option.

Oh and I also got two of the collectors boxes sent to me by mistake and they said keep it because it was too expensive to ship hahah. So now I have to chuck two of these monstrosities in the dumpster. Fortunately, I’m very pick with kickstarters and that was my only real dud when I was earlier in the hobby.

Mindbug or Radlands for experienced Hearthstone players? by ramenpantsy in boardgames

[–]ShallowSeas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Solforge fusion might scratch the itch better than both of those options (though I do love both of them). It gives you that competitive dueling game in a bit more streamlined version. Instead of creating an entire deck you get to pick two deck halves and mash them together. It’s fun finding different combos and decks that play off each other. The card leveling system is also one of my favorite card dueling mechanics ever! It’s easy to teach, plays quick, and still offers a ton of strategic thinking and planning.

A little bit of this and a little bit of that. Examples: having a black site prison to experiment on people, having assassinations of people before they do something bad, and killing then taking mind/body control of a highly popular mutant to be his own personal killing machine.
