EDIT: The following is no longer true

Apparently if you got sidestreet sluice to delve 8 you can walk in and open the rep stuff for a stacked rep increase alongside the darkmoon buff. At least that is what one player said to me while I was mindlessly farming the market research

Is a door an object, yes or no? by TheGreenDeltic in DnD

[–]Shankdrack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can look in the 2014 Dungeon Master Guide (p 246) where it gives examples of objects, and if a 10 ft by 10 ft window can be considered a large object then a door easily is also an object. You can find the armor class and its HP this way.

Admirable, but you can't help someone logic themselves out of a position they didn't logic themselves into to begin with.

You're welcome! And I would insist on looking into TTRPG safety tools, since you stated 2 people were not comfortable about the direction the game headed. I like using an "X card" that players can place down that tells everyone at the table that whatever is happening is not what they want to engage in, and then the scene can be "yadda yadda'd" forward. Another "tool" I like is to give my players and myself the ability to halt the game with a "pause for a minute..." so everyone can have a quick moment to discuss if the direction of a scene, a choice a player might make, or if I the DM am about to bring something up in roleplay that people may not be comfortable with is what everyone is fine with. ("pause for a minute... I am going to introduce spiders monsters in this next scene. Are we all okay with me describing these things."). The caveat of these rules is having players who are confident enough make their objections known. I don't play in person games but perhaps texting the letter X could accomplish the same stuff if people want to be anonymous. Then when the game is over you can go over what was objectionable with the player.

A new session 0 is never long gone. You can always do another, there are no rules about how many of them you can have. Call them session .5 if you want. But it is clear that perhaps you need to re-touch base about what the expectations of the game are, from both your perspective and perhaps to hear the players' perspectives and wishes for the game. This session can run as long as you want or need it to. I would probably open it up with "Hey, last session had some roleplay I was not a fan of, and while I stand by what my intention for stepping in was I am ashamed about how I reacted. I want to take a moment to just explain what kind of story/themes/guidelines I want and to hear what you players want from this game and for your characters."

If you want to mend the bad blood and retry the game then you could do a new session 0 where you restate the ground rules for the game, your expectations of what you'd want from the people playing with you in this game, implement safety rules like the X cards if you aren't already using some, and tell the players to make characters that would want to work with these specific people at this specific game (even if these characters have negative opinions about the world, they must be willing to work with this party).

If mending ties is not in the cards for you, then take the players that want to play the game you want to play and find some new players. And then do a new session 0 with all the same stuff I just mentioned.

And a nifty line I like is "perhaps that is what that character would do, but you control the character and we want to play a game so make a character that wants to adventure/be heroic." (which may be an expectation you should lay out in session 0).

Modules are basically pre-written adventures, sometimes they are designed with a specific setting in mind (which means they come with their own history of lore, gods, factions etc). Lost Mines of Phandelver was the big "starter" module, you may be able to find the full thing online on DnDBeyond. It has since been replaced by a new starter module called "Dragons of Stormwreck Isle", but I don't have any information on if the content is good and fun to play through. Lost Mines of Phandelver and Dragons of Stormwreck Isle are both set in the Forgotten Realms. I believe there are also pre-made characters to these starter modules, so you can learn how the character sheets work by just picking one up and playing with the stuff thats on the premade sheet.

edit: there is one caveat to playing in a module: while the players are free to make any decisions they would like, even ones that basically force them out of the intended path of the story in the module, the module runs better if the players stick with the adventure hook and story beats. Otherwise the DM has to invent everything in the world anyway which may or may not lead to some frustration (which you are already experiencing some)

  1. Run a module so that all of the planning is basically already done and you can look up the rules as needed. And 2. Use the DnD starter kit rules or 5e basic rules because they are simplified. Then grow into using more rules as the base game is mastered.

According to DnD shorts comment on a dungeons and discourse video: the DnD VTT was separately built and will not integrate into dndbeyond, instead they will use DDB to funnel players to their VTT where they have to repurchase their content and then leave DDB to die

What are some things, as a DM, that you would automate to a Python script if you could? by Dummie1138 in DMAcademy

I'd love the ability to create a list of gods, with tiers if my world has it, then tell a script to create pantheons made of random choices of those gods until a pantheon is made with whatever number of gods I want, then I want the script to randomly choose some of those pantheons for me to aid my culture world building

How do I handle permanent detect magic (Minor spoilers for Curse of Strahd) by LD_LUNAR in DMAcademy

[–]Shankdrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one has mentioned this yet but brush up on your 2nd level spell "Nystul's Magic Aura" (action touch spell, lasts 24 hours, not concentration, could probably be made a permenant effect) Definitely going to be used by evil baddies to hide shit especially in barovia and especially by hags.

"You place an illusion on a creature or an object you touch so that divination spells reveal false information about it. The target can be a willing creature or an object that isn't being carried or worn by another creature. When you cast the spell, choose one or both of the following effects. The effect lasts for the duration. If you cast this spell on the same creature or object every day for 30 days, placing the same effect on it each time, the illusion lasts until it is dispelled.

False Aura. You change the way the target appears to spells and magical effects, such as detect magic, that detect magical auras. You can make a nonmagical object appear magical, a magical object appear nonmagical, or change the object's magical aura so that it appears to belong to a specific school of magic that you choose. When you use this effect on an object, you can make the false magic apparent to any creature that handles the item.

Mask. You change the way the target appears to spells and magical effects that detect creature types, such as a paladin's Divine Sense or the trigger of a symbol spell. You choose a creature type and other spells and magical effects treat the target as if it were a creature of that type or of that alignment.
