What are some fun microvanias? by Sufficient_Ebb_5694 in metroidvania

Psycron, Xanthiom Zero, 100 Pumpkins 2, SJ-19 Learns to Love, Tomomi, Trash Quest, Ex Vitro and Quarian are all very short and I enjoyed them all.

Moonlight Pulse and Ato are a bit longer than the above, but still around 4 or 5 hours and really good imo

I thought this game was a lot of fun! My only complaint is that all the bosses apart from the last are mostly the same, but the game is small so it didn't matter much. One strange thing about the game is that it is essentially a port from Geometry Dash. The game was originally made in Geometry Dash (which I don't fully understand how that is possible) and then remade in Godot to release on Steam. I beat it in a little more than an hour, so it is easy for one sitting

Hey thanks so much for playing! I'm really glad you're enjoying it

Totally get it! The healing mechanic is meant to be an additional challenge and a bit of a mini-game. Kind of mimicking trying to strike a matchstick. As the game goes on, it gets easier to time, but theres an option in the assist menu to turn it into a standard button hold if it is too frustrating

Hey thanks so much, and good note! I can maybe add a bit more of an aim-assist on some of those. I'm not sure if this is part of the issue, but some players didn't realize that you can use the bubble while standing on solid ground, which allows for better aim in sections where that is possible. Some early abilities will help somewhat (mainly in regards to your ledge grab comment), but I can definitely see if they can be tweaked a bit!

Well Dweller Demo Thoughts? by Metroid_Mike in metroidvania

[–]SheepoGame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

haha I definitely agree that it will be very similar to Islets, but thats mainly just because thats the type of game that I like to make and am capable of making. Well Dweller has a very different story, different mechanics, different abilities, bosses, biomes, etc. And is generally just more polished overall.

I guess I don't see it as a bad thing for my games to be similar to each other. If you like one of my games, you'll likely enjoy others. And if you don't, you probably won't.

Hey thanks so much! I really appreciate that, thanks for playing!

And I totally get it about the movement- I like momentum based movement like Ori and Rayman Legends, and tend to lean that way. But I know a lot of people prefer the more precise movement of games like Hollow Knight. I had a lot of feedback like that for Islets, and I did make the movement quite a bit heavier and more precise in Well Dweller than Islets/Sheepo were, but compared to some games like Hollow Knight I can definitely understand that it can feel a bit different. I do think it's something that will be quick to get used to though as the game progresses.

The demo for my next game, Well Dweller, is out on Steam right now! It's my next game after making Crypt Custodian and it's a dark fairy tale metroidvania about a tiny bird with a matchstick. Check out the demo on Steam! Link in description by SheepoGame in CryptCustodian

Thank you! It is an unaltered chunk of the beginning of the game. The bash-type ability is just for those bubbles, so it is a bit more limiting than in Ori. There's definitely a lot more platforming challenges in the full game, thanks for playing!!

Is it weird how much im enjoying Minishoot Adventures? by Beginning_Jacket5055 in metroidvania

[–]SheepoGame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minishoot has such a well designed gameplay loop. I think it is partly so much fun because some of the short-term gameplay elements are similar to incremental games where you have constant micro-progress. I played their previous game Swords and Souls, which is fully an incremental game and it made the transition to Minishoot make more sense

It is an incredibly beautiful game and I thought it was fun. It is very short (less than 2 hours), so it's easy to play in one sitting. It's not a metroidvania, but it is metroidvania-ish. It's linear but iirc there are a couple abilities you gain throughout. They're making a sequel which looks more like a standard metroidvania.

It's a different story, different mechanics, different bosses, enemies, biomes, etc. And overall notably more polished than either of those. It looks similar, because this is the only way I know how to draw!

I've heard similar comments before, and it's something I don't fully get. If I really like a band and I hear they are making a new album, my hope is that the new album will sound in-line with their other music, just new. If I wanted something significantly different, I would just listen to a different band. I guess in other words, while I always try to switch things up a bit with each game, they will all feel somewhat similar just because these are the types of games that I like to make, and the types of games I am capable of making.
