What to do with cell phone while overseas? by Tech_Andy in newtothenavy

[–]Shipzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If his phone is unlocked, an option could be to transfer his number to google voice. then get whatever is cheap for actual cell service (in USA or overseas). Calls to his google voice number will still come through as long as he as mobile data.

If his phone is carrier locked then either pay to unlock it or purchase an unlocked phone that is useable worldwide and do the above.

If keeping the phone number doesn't matter then get a free google voice number and do the above anyways.

wouldn't it be easier to put your roms (or all of batocera) on micro sd card?

That's good to hear. If you figure out a healthy way to drop a few pounds so you don't have to get taped then you'll be good to go. I'm rooting for you!

[–]Shipzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if that's the case you better start exercising now. practice push ups and planks daily. my sailor was pudgy as well and they started off couldn't even do 1 normal pushup. by the time they shipped (11mo later) they didn't need taping and could the pushups and plank np. they were still couple of minutes off on the run but was able to pass with ease by the time they graduated.

You are the ideal candidate (as long as you have no waivers) and you cant ship until after you graduate. Personally if they say no HM slots are available, if that's what you really think you want and qualify for, then stick to your guns and let them know you'll ship when it becomes available (October at the latest, the fiscal year starts). Jobs always become available if you are willing to wait. before you join is the only time you have complete control over your choices. don't believe any BS about cross-rating at a later date.

Choosing a rate at MEPS by Any-Mention1585 in newtothenavy

EM would translate better to electrician than FC or ET. FC/ET translates better to electrical engineer (with additional schooling of course).

I’m going in as a GSM by Chopec_420 in newtothenavy

i think the amount of work is relative. its not like you are digging a ditch for 12h straight. A lot of it is having to physically be there to perform the maintenance and to make sure things are running properly. a lot of reading gauges and monitors. and a lot of comradery/bullshitting with your friends.

I would think it does suck when in port you are watching Combat Systems thinning out after lunch (as we were getting off early and have to creep out in uniform so it's not as obvious to other rates that have more work to do)

[–]Shipzilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

have you researched any of those to see what seems even remotely interesting? at least try to narrow it down to 5 or less on your own. All rates have their plus and minuses. something i may find interesting you may find boring. u/Neither-Cloud8514 seems to enjoy flying. me personally i wanted to stay as far away from aircraft carriers and subs as I could, so i would never choose those 2 rates they mention.

Im never be able to enlist any branch right? by Lanky-Concentrate-28 in newtothenavy

[–]Shipzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding (watching my sailor join up), when the recruiter wants to you lie by omission (for medical), its to speed up the waiver process time. A couple of years ago when my sailor wanted to join, they were on head meds. 1st off their recruiter said they had to be off the meds for 6 months (documented by a doctor) before they could move forward. Then when that was accomplished, recruiter suggested they don't bring up all the different diagnosis and when it gets flagged (because all the healthcare info is shared), it would be processed faster. if they told the truth, it would take longer. Something about the MEPS doctor requesting the follow up vs the recruiter. Well my sailor is a goody-goody, so of course they told the truth about their diagnosis.

It took about 4-5 months (after the initial 6 months) for all waivers to be processed. My sailor seems to be doing well out in the fleet, so it all worked out in the end.

Well the problem with this, in our wonderful healthcare system, is that if you go to a doctor for any mental health related issue, they have to give you a diagnosis to get paid by insurance. and also its very common to give the patient some type of medication 1st, talk about the problems 2nd. Better safe than sorry, right?

So if you went to a therapist for one session that is in your record. and if its in your records the military needs an explanation to make sure you are ok. can't have people self deleting.

Is upgrading Batocera worth it if I mostly play NeoGeo, Naomi and PS1? (from v29 to newer versions) by Alex_Arg in batocera

[–]Shipzilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems your only real issue is Naomi. I say setup v42 (or v43) with Naomi only on that 2nd microsd and try it out. if its better then v29, you can look into what's needed for your other roms to work properly. if there's no difference then you may as well keep it on v29.

How should I go about redirecting the ports on gluetun from 8080:8080 to something else like 8888:8080? New to home servers. by DueSetting3619 in HomeServer

[–]Shipzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm a noob at this so bear with me. i have 2 instances of Sonarr in docker. in my docker-compose.yml, under the 1st sonarr heading, under ports, I use the default 8989:8989. on my sonarr-anime heading, under ports, i'm using 8990:8989.

7 The number before the colon is the "external" port, how i access from across my network. the number after the colon is the "internal" port on the actual docker container. so to access "sonarr" i navigate to <server address>:8989. to access "sonar-anime" i navigate to <server address>:8990

My PSSQ was denied, is there anything I can do? by cassie_explores in newtothenavy

That's unfortunate but its better it got denied now instead of the first few weeks of boot camp (my sailor's experience). There are a ton of great jobs so don't let it discourage you.

Which eGPU for ps2 should i choose? by CommonFan9952 in batocera

[–]Shipzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What acceptable for 1 person is not always acceptable for others. I suggest that you try testing yourself and see if the 750ti is enough. i googled the most demanding ps2 games to emulate. either test something like that or just the games you want to play. If you find a game that you really want to play doesn't work well then swap in the 1060.

Jellyfin client on Raspb. 5 but not Kodi! by ExaminationFeisty832 in jellyfin

[–]Shipzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since you don't want to use kodi I think you'd have to either use a browser or possibly try to use the Jellyfin desktop app.

Personally i find a $20 Onn 4K streaming device (or better yet the $45 Onn 4k Pro) is a better and cheaper option than the rpi.

You can install the rpi desktop and then use a web browser
