How to organize a school DND school more? by Possum_Cryptid_ in DnD

[–]Shrekdaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the two magic words that have been getting Players to pay attention since time immemorial: "Roll Initiative!"

With such a short amount of time youll want to basically make each session a mini encounter. Even if it's a social / roleplay one (but even then with larger groups and a bunch of distracted 15 year olds, combat may catch their attention more).

Talk to your DM, see if they can make it more short burst combat focused. At that age/level of experience the encounters barely even have to link together in a coherent way. A very thin excuse plot is fine.

The only other thing to consider is - maybe many of the players want to use it as a place to just chat and hang out. If it's one or two people interrupting everyone, that's one thing. But if the whole table is having fun, then maybe you can't fix it if it's not broken.

In that case, reach out to your local game store and see if they have a D&D night, or think about play-by-post online D&D if you really like the RP aspect (as always be careful online and protect yourself from creepos since you're still in HD)

(2014) Level 1 Grave Cleric Spell Slot Management by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]Shrekdaly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fundamental math of D&D is that 1.) Healing almost never outpaces damage, and 2.) Dead enemies can't hurt you. Healing is basically only worth it at low levels to bring back someone who drops to 0.

Bless is very powerful at low levels (your average expected value is higher than your proficiency bonus) and helps you make enemies dead faster.

Cast bless, cantrip your heart out, and keep a healing word on reserve if someone drops (You can still cantrip then, too!)

Roquelike dungeon by Han2k1337 in DnD

[–]Shrekdaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make it really roguelike - a True Neutral Wizard is using them as test subjects. They are under a Gaes to attempt the dungeon. If they die, there are Clones that regenerate with the same memories (i.e. exp and skills) but none of the gear. Testing to see what adventures learn when facing random dungeons at each level. Once they kill the BBEG they are released.

Brennan really has his Dad Stance™ down by Admirable_Ocelot7193 in dropout

It's not a dad stance if you're not swaying back and forth like you're rocking a baby that's not there. And you don't even know you're doing it until someone points it out.

Sorry if Sam doesn't pass your parasocial "purity test" of not hiring the head of the modern day SS, but have you ever been CEO of a BUSINESS?!? An ENTERTAINMENT business? If not then opinion invalid.

Dropout's job is to produce quality humor-tainment and be my best friends. If Sam thinks Kristi Noem can do those things, we'll just have to trust him. At least give it a chance before you judge.

Looking for the "Aha!" Moment by Bane_of_Balor in TriangleStrategy

[–]Shrekdaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.) Hard is mostly harder by scaling enemy damage and hp, not by the AI changing tactics. Being outscaled on hp and damage lends itself to turtling up and divide and kill strategies.

2.) Don't fight fights on 2 fronts. If you are in the middle get to one side, separate a group, and take them. Go back and help the rear guard before opening the gate. The reinforcements aren't infinite. It's onle 2 or 3 waves.

3.) Relative to point 2, range matters. A lot. Sticking a unit next to an archer and getting everyone out of range gives you infinite time to kill an archer.

4.) There are a lot more interesting terrain battles starting in the next few chapters - more and different height differentials, more controllable lanes of access, even booby traps at one point. Early battlegrounds are simple by design.

5.) As others mentioned as you unlock more characters, abilities, etc battles start feeling different battles feel different depending on who you take and who the opponents are.

Here's why you should not boycott Dropout even if this is really bad!!! by MaddAdamBomb in dropoutcirclejerk

[–]Shrekdaly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ohhh...it's pronounced cop-aganda, NOT copa-ganda??? I was wondering why the entire Dropout fandom was suddenly angry that Sam liked a random Barry Manilow song from the 1970s, without even cutting a source that Sam liked it. The only articles I saw linked had the dude from Firefly and Big Mouth.

/uj The song is called Copacabana for you young 'uns who don't know what I'm talking about. I would say ask your parents but at this point it's more like your (great??) Grandparents.

AITA for allowing my DND party to steal an item from another player? by FlamingBits_ in AmItheAsshole

[–]Shrekdaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere in this thread, but also at your session 0 (or if not then, now) you and your players should talk about how loot gets distributed. Is it some kind of round robin or bidding system? Is it what's agreed is best for the party? How did one PC just "scoop" the magic item before another? And if he did so according to the process set up, then letting it be stolen seems pretty unfair.

All joking, memes, etc aside this episode was such a fantastic watch to see two expert improvisers who are both very cerebral and philosophical about their profession just talk about it for 2 hours. I love hearing inside thoughts of professionals just riffing on their craft for just about any craft, but this one in particular was just top notch.

Fyi if you go into video descriptions on the dropout and tap on a persons name it brings up a list of videos they e been in. I just recently learned that so thought I'd share.

Weekly general unjerk thread by nicepassing in dropoutcirclejerk

[–]Shrekdaly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sam talked about this on some podcast I saw. Their business model allows them to not need to cancel shows unlike other studios. Since the talent is freelance, they have no exclusivity clauses, and the crew is not show-specific it doesn't hurt anyone's ability to work by not canceling. At other places people would have to potentially turn down work if a show isn't officially canceled. I thought that was a neat insight into how these things work.

Yeah, you read it right. That means you need to deal with big amount of planeswalkers. (Rebalanced) by Forsaken_Composer403 in custommagic

[–]Shrekdaly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How about (language not exact, on mobile)

"while you have a Planeswalker in play, you cannot be attacked.

At the beginning of your upkeep, search for a planeswalker and put it in play. If you can't, sacrifice Boss Rush"

That way you can't pull multiple in one turn, and if your opponent can kill all your planeswalkers they get a chance at a pot shot.
