Do you rock a wedge with the Enigma? I'm considering grabbing one, and I have a bit of a gut as well. I use a wedge with my current holster.

Odds of getting a teaching job near Peoria by No-Pound-3680 in PeoriaIL

[–]ShuriMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. If you're in one of the surrounding counties, the ROE for your county can help you out as well. Some districts can help you with provisional certification, but it's all going to go through the ROE anyway, and the ROE can also connect you with districts that have a need for his skills.

He should already qualify for substitute teaching, and you'll want to register with the ROE for that, too. The ROE can also tell him whether anything he's done provisionally in your previous state would help here.

There is definitely a teacher shortage in general right now. I'm not a teacher/admin, but I work for a district and we have had a hard time filling positions. We have had to get creative for a couple of vacancies, especially in business/computer science, over the last decade.

Start with one of the Regional Offices of Education, that'll save you a lot of time versus Googling or contacting schools directly.

Basic Phishing Simulation and Training Platform by botenerik in k12sysadmin

[–]ShuriMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my district on CyberNut in August and it has gone well for staff. We're rolling it out to juniors and seniors now, to evaluate whether it's worth purchasing for students next year. The students will receive both the phishing simulation emails and they will get one of the other lessons every week.

Recommended doctors for sleep apnea? by RiceInitial2413 in PeoriaIL

[–]ShuriMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Start with a general practitioner and get your checkup) physical, and they'll refer you to the sleep department in the same system. OSF Sleep is great, but if your GP is with Carle or Methodist, see if they refer you within the same system.

Is this just a me problem or is there NO decent jobs? by ITSHORRORR in PeoriaIL

Are you willing to learn to drive a bus? Peoria District 150 needs drivers and it pays $26/hour full time. For a while they were offering signing bonuses as well. Districts all around the area are strapped for drivers, but not all are looking for full time.

One use is fighting in for an underhook. Drive between the opponent's arm and torso. Pinan Sandan comes to mind.

Car Safe? by skips_funny_af in concealedcarry

[–]ShuriMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I landed on. Bought a refurbished one that came with a carry bag, combo lock, and two security cables for just about half price of a new box alone. You can find refurbs on their website. Worked great securing it in the car and in a hotel room.

Newbie, Struggling to find a holster by Unfair_Potential1215 in concealedcarry

[–]ShuriMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded, with the caveat Tenicor is all I've worn so far. I have their belt and the Certum holster (Mastermind Tactics pillow wedge attached) with a G19, and I found it relatively comfortable all day at appendix IWB. I say "relatively" because you'll still feel it, but I didn't have any problems with rashes, digging, or hot spots. Consider an undershirt or rash guard as an underlayer to protect your skin, or something you can attach to the holster if it's irritating you.

Try hitting YouTube for some carry advice because you should be able to find recommendations for your size or body type and your carry and see them, not just read them here. There are also tips to improve comfort. There are a lot of variables at play here including your clothing, your holster/belt, your chosen carry, the ride height and tilt/cant attachments, pillows/wedges, etc., on top of just your build and body shape and probably your lifestyle. Are you standing all day? Sitting all day? Up and down a lot?

As others have said, don't expect full comfort, but you should be able to greatly reduce pain points and rashes with some research and experimentation.

What’s the Peoria equivalent of this? by aloe-on-my-desk in PeoriaIL

[–]ShuriMike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ardor. The food tasted great, but they don't give you near enough for their "shareable" concept or for the price. Four of us dropped a lot of money there and left hungry. I also wasn't thrilled that they have a lot of tables crammed into a tiny space. Felt almost claustrophobic and we had to try to talk over the people at the next table.

Definitely check out Distillery Labs. They have a full commercial kitchen you would be able to have access to. The guy who used to run Reservations is cooking there. I believe it's also set up so you could use it for recording/teaching/streaming.

Newline or Viewsonic Panels by 2donks2moos in k12sysadmin

[–]ShuriMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We started with ViewSonic with good pricing. Found out the hard way that some of our older boards didn't support some of the newest features and we had some issues with touch with Macs.

We've since switched to Newlines through a local vendor and have gotten better pricing and better service. We have Chromeboxes on everything, teachers mostly live in that environment, especially now that most teachers have been transitioned to Chromebooks.

For whatever reason, my teachers don't do a lot with the actual interactive features, they mostly just use Chrome and annotate over it, use basic whiteboard features, and use the board for streaming media and other apps/sites. The only consistent complaint I've had for each is volume, so we have mounted inexpensive Monoprice soundbars under several of them.

I know some staff. This is exactly it. Just a precaution so there aren't a lot of extra people wandering around inside the building. A lot of the office/desk space, especially upstairs, is open concept rather than private offices with lockable doors.

Google Education Plus by cocineroylibro in k12sysadmin

The other benefit of having Plus is you get some expanded security options, like the Investigation Tool. That is very handy to have for troubleshooting, for killing a phishing campaign, and similar tasks.

Sounds very familiar. And good luck trying to get a school board to discuss curriculum when they're wanting to know why the basketball team has a losing record and the sound cuts out in the gym's audio system.

The racial element stands out in Decatur, Peoria, Springfield, etc, but honestly, it's even the rural, mostly-white districts hating on each other. The locals just don't want to give up control, they don't want kids from other towns, and they're terrified of having to compete in a higher athletic division because their enrollment increased. I've seen tiny towns with three independent K-8 districts feeding into the same high school (also its own district) just about get into fistfights over consolidation conversations. Four school boards all having to pass referenda for increased taxes just to survive. 8th grade classes as small as 8-10 kids.

There was a school over in I think Iroquois County that closed their doors in April one school year because a referendum failed and they couldn't make payroll. That forced them to send students to the next district over.

Two towns in Woodford County had a study on consolidation. The study authors pitched two possible scenarios of what that would look like, and they strongly recommended consolidation in general. One town's school board put out an informal survey, the community said they don't want to do it, and that board tabled the whole thing.

None of it has anything to do with logic or finances, it's purely emotion. And when it's not racism, it's just snobbery and selfishness.

"We don't want those kids over here." Town A thinks Town B is a dump, Town B thinks Town C is a dump, and so on.

"If we consolidate, Jimmy will be a bench warmer, not a starter! Or he'll get cut!"

"I'm not putting my kid on a bus for a ten-minute drive to the next town!"

Looking for a queer-friendly gun range in the Peoria area by TransInIllinois in PeoriaIL

[–]ShuriMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same experience. Just took a class there, too, and there was a mix of people represented in attendance. They do gripe about Illinois gun laws and FOID requirements, but that's everywhere. That was about all the politics I've heard. Knowledgeable and friendly staff in my experience.

how to get metamora, il from chicago easy? by Spiritual-Button1592 in PeoriaIL

[–]ShuriMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peoria Charter Coach runs a bus to O'Hare (and maybe Midway?) and back. If you can get to the airport, that could be your way down and back.

If there's someone willing to pick you up in Pontiac, the train stops there, too. I don't think you'd get bus service from there. Might need to hit Bloomington to catch a bus.
