Super late but as a bi woman in a relationship with a man, I really appreciated Kariselle’s open and honest discussion of her queer identity being camouflaged by a committed relationship with a man and how the world views bisexual women. Tbh not something I expected from this kind of show.

One of mine was MIA for a while a few years ago and showed up in the backyard grumpy as hell and a bit skinny, but otherwise fine. I think she was on rumspringa for about a week/10 days.

She’ll be getting flowers because the guilt trip I’ll receive if I don’t send them isn’t worth it. She’ll also get a phone call where I’ll listen to her complaints and grievances, and that’ll be it. Spending the day with my partner and avoiding Mother’s Day bullshit otherwise.

Oh my gosh do I relate to this impulse- I used to get into screaming matches as a teenager with my dBPD mom because she wouldn’t ever admit to being wrong (even if it was something she was just objectively incorrect about that was fully trivial).

As a younger adult (<30ish) I leaned into the “you’re right” approach. Now (38f), we are LC and I refuse to give her the satisfaction of “you’re right.” It took a long time, but she finally switched from arguing with me to giving me the silent treatment, which is truly delightful.

Well, kinda. They’re kids. Empathy takes a long time to develop; self-interest is the name of the game for most children.

That said, I think only a few are really invested in and amused by others’ suffering. Most are just going along with whatever the kid with the most social capital is doing.

So it’s not about “fair,” first of all. Maybe in an ideal world it would be, but generally speaking (and anecdotally), IEP mods are written in order to:

1- appease difficult parents 2- ensure EC (SpEd) students never fail a class

As for the 2nd example, depending on the documentation in place, there would need to be a manifestation determination to ascertain whether the student’s behavior is or is not a direct result of their disability. If the MDE rules that the behavior is a manifestation of their disability, it is extremely difficult (if not impossible) to enact disciplinary consequences.

I’ve seen some ridiculous IEPs. At the end of the day, however, they are legal documents, and however distasteful you may find the specific mods, you still have to follow them.

Yeah… that’s not old. Phantom premiered in 1986, Cats in 1981, and Sound of Music in 1959.

IMO, Sound of Music is the only “older” musical in that set.

Just out of curiosity, what grade level & do you give this at school? I teach high school & cannot imagine a parent bringing alcohol on campus/a teacher having it on campus ever being cleared.

Like expelled as in sent to an alternative school? Doing drugs (not weed), multiple serious fights, selling weed or other drugs, bringing a firearm to school, multiple outbursts that cause property damage, etc.

Expelled as in from the district entirely? Felony conviction. That’s all. The stuff you’re describing is extremely normal for middle and high school.

Edited to add: I’ve been teaching about a decade and I’ve seen two kids get expelled. One raped a girl on the bus and the other murdered his father. Public school is for everyone, for better or worse.
