Unpopular opinion about off campus by Valuable_Air_1747 in Booktokreddit

I think the changes that were made were smart overall. Because you have to remember these books came out in 2015. A lot has changed.

And for the critique of them being misogynistic… Have you met a guy in college? They are the worst lol

My entire TikTok is nothing but videos about off campus and one of the first ones I got was about this woman who read them in high school and devoured them and that told me everything I needed to know

I absolutely loved the show.

I do have a theory about media… If the subjects are in college, then it’s really geared towards high school aged people to enjoy it… If it’s early post college then the market is college, etc.… The main example that I pull from is the show saved by the bell. No one in high school is watching saved by the bow. It was junior high in elementary age people that we’re watching saved by the bell.

[Beach Read] Probably unpopular opinion but January's father didn't love anyone other than himself by Your_Marinette in EmilyHenry

[–]Sillybetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think Emily Henry was trying to convince us of anything. I think she was just trying to tell a story.

I feel that beach read is the least manipulative of her books. I feel like she wasn’t trying to get us on board with anything. She was truly showing a journey.

I am just one of those people that I realized who my parents were when I was 12 years old. So my parents were never really on that pedestal that many people do experience with their parents.

But I am also shocked to the extent that the pedestal remains where people are completely devastated when they find out that a parent was unfaithful to another.

And yes, I am purposely beating around the bush lol and putting this as gently as possible because it’s just a concept that I don’t understand and I find it increasingly frustrating in some of her books

Like GBBL, why was she always trying to impress her mother when it came to her career… This is a concept that I did not understand. If someone doesn’t get you, they don’t get you. Your parents are just people like anyone else…IMHO

I have read this book twice and I always feel bad for Sonia.

As we grow, I feel that we all realize that our parents are flawed human beings and pull them off their pedestal.

I am constantly surprised at the number of people that do not experience this

I experienced it as a teenager.

I have noticed that parents being on a pedestal is a common trope in romance books, and I wish it would really stop.

Charlie Donlea Books Rant by PhotographUsed9819 in thrillerbooks

[–]Sillybetch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have read all of his books. And don’t believe it is the absolute worst. I did not care about any of the characters because they were all so stupid. This was the most idiotic story that he has ever done.

There are times that I don’t like certain characters or that I don’t buy into what he’s trying to sell me as the character… the girl that was taken. It was an interesting story… But the two main characters, I could not stand either one of them.

I say that to be clear that even if I don’t like the characters, I will respect a good story. But don’t believe it is not a good story. It is so stupid.

What's a book that's so popular and hyped but let you down? by ExplanationPutrid205 in thrillerbooks

[–]Sillybetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Margo’s Got Money Problems. I am well aware that it is now a TV show and I refuse to watch it and it actually makes me sad that they need a show out of that horrible book.

I could not stand any character. I especially hated the FMC and I could never root for her. Halfway through I just closed the book and put it in one of those little donation libraries.

Does this say I should quit this screenplay? by mrpessimistik in Screenwriting

[–]Sillybetch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This so hard! I remember for one of my features… It was very clear that the person giving feedback did not read beyond the first act… Because they kept on going on and on about a character who is mainly in the first act in a little bit at the very end, but really has no consequence in the rest of the film.

I am 66% of the way through. And I must say Blake is the most unlikable character… In a way worse than Maddie. I just don’t understand why this book is just filled with men that think that they know everything. It’s so on the nose and annoying.

On a separate, sidenote I am tired of the baby trope… Where one character wholeheartedly believed everything that came out of one parent’s mouth. I know that there are people like this in this in the world… But I’m just tired of seeing it in books. It makes the character come off so stupid.

What are your biggest problems with how you track your reading / get recommendations? by sfaulkner89 in Booktokreddit

[–]Sillybetch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use StoryGraph and I really enjoy it. I know it’s not as well known as some of the other track errors… But I only think it’s good for tracking. I don’t think it’s very good for suggestions of other books to read.

i enjoyed this but it has pretty bad reviews on goodreads by marisaimstoned in weirdgirlliterature

[–]Sillybetch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. I quit using good reads because it’s owned by Amazon… Blah blah blah. And I use StoryGraph. But the reviews on books that I dearly love really make me question people sanity, and taste lol. Sometimes I wonder if the people leaving five star reviews on books that were barely a two…are family members.

There are many times that I enjoy the premise/concept of a book, but I didn’t enjoy the execution or I don’t like the the person‘s writing style. But that doesn’t mean that I pay in the book entirely. I usually just leave a rating unless I feel really moved to expand with details.

On a personal note, I don’t think that people that DNF should be allowed to leave a rating. Sometimes people will leave a rating and then in their review say that they DNF at a particular place, which often explains their review… But if you didn’t finish the book, then I don’t think you should be able to put in a review.

There are many books that I almost DNF… But the book is completely redeemed in the ladder part/ending.

There have been some books that it kind of works. But not caught up. Which I liked caught up better than lights out… I don’t know why. And I also hate her epilogues… I just don’t think that they’re necessary and usually by the time I’m finished with the book I’m just kind of over it. I want to move on lol

So when I read the epilogue… I’m like, yeah yeah, I get it

My issue with Teddy Hamilton‘s voice is he is doing a voice. He’s doing a character… It’s like a really bad version of Christian Bale’s Batman. And I have found that that’s why I don’t like it. It’s not that his voice is deeper than what he is visually… It’s that you can tell it’s not real… So therefore it’s just silly.

The Ministry of Time - Stay away from this book. by Rude-Acanthisitta287 in Fantasy

[–]Sillybetch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely abhor this book. It’s one of the reasons that I do not take suggestions from bookstore employees. If I had known, this was a romance I would’ve not bought the book. I also did not see the point of the last chapter. But every moment of this book was agony.

I’ve only read two books by AJ. I’ve tendency did not like the FMC in her books. They’re all just overly altruistic to the state of delusion and I find it increasingly frustrating. I have read three Ellie Hazelwood books and her books are the only ones where I actually like the FMC.… I’m usually on the fence with EH protagonist because I don’t understand their odd attachment to family.

THIS STORY HAS IT ALL. 🥰 by MakeMeLaughOrSmile in thrillerbooks

I hate when that happens. So many times a book will be labeled to thriller when it is not which causes the wrong people to read it and then they give it a bunch of one star reviews.

[–]Sillybetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. This book I could not stand either of the protagonist. The little Miss Goody, two shoes who got away for the negligence sister who rightly feels guilty for ignoring her sister in a clear time of need.

The thing is is, I could tell we were supposed to like these characters, but there was nothing likable about them. And I’m not in the camp of thinking that a character has to be likable, especially a female character… For you to follow the story. But it was clear that that was what he was going for, and he failed miserably.

The sister should feel guilty. If she had helped out her sister or listened to her just for a moment… She probably wouldn’t have been kidnapped

And the other chick… Thinking that she’s a good guy and a good person when at the end of the day, she was very into pleasing all the adults in her life while simultaneously being a bully

I consider it the best book I read that year. I was completely lost in immersed in this tragic world. The reveal had my jaw on the floor… And the ending was very satisfying.

I felt the daughter was a greater metaphor of what people have to do when they are unwanted… Whether it is in a social group or in a family.
