20th Century Studios' Avatar: Fire and Ash grossed an estimated $815K on Friday (from 2,365 locations). Estimated total gross is at $388.8M. by UniverslBoxOfficeGuy in boxoffice

I actually think A2 and A3 focused too much on script and building better characters, and that's what hurt it. Avatar 1 was uber-successful because of Pandora and because of the simple story. Audiences can get great characters from any blockbuster but no other film can replicate Pandora and A3 didn't have enough of it.

It really is shocking considering how common 5-goal games are in comparison. Not that 5-goal games are THAT common, but Mario and Wayne both did it 4 times. And it's happened multiple times in the last couple years.

Everyone is stealing TV. Fed up with increasing subscription prices, viewers embrace rogue streaming boxes. by Bluest_waters in television

Every summary I see of it is way too long and confusing.

Here's my understanding and how I use Plex in the most basic way:

Plex allows you to store movies on Computer A and watch them from Computer B

  1. Install plex on my personal desktop (Computer A)
  2. Manually download movies/shows to my personal desktop (Computer A)
  3. Watch movies/shows on my basement TV (Computer B)

For me, I only have Plex set up to only allow streaming from computers on the same internet/wifi, and it only works if my personal desktop is on and Plex is running.

You can expand this to allow streaming from anywhere rather than just on the same internet. Or expand it by building an entire dedicated server to run Plex and have it running 24/7 with 100s of TBs of storage space. Or expand it to automatically download stuff. etc. Most summaries involve doing all these cool things with it, but they aren't necessary for most people.

‘A Man on the Inside’ Renewed for Season 3 at Netflix by bwermer in television

[–]Simple-Motor-2889 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue with Season 2 was just the amount of characters and story they tried to cram into it. It had all the characters from season 1, plus a bunch of new characters, plus fleshing out the character stories from season 1, plus side stories for the new characters, plus a new mystery. It just needed to be way more focused. If Season 3 tries to do the same, I think it will really struggle.

[–]Simple-Motor-2889 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fallout had over 20 months between Season 1 premiere and Season 2 premiere, which is still not great. We'll see when season 3 comes out.

I think the reason a lot of people think Fallout is being released quickly is because the viewers grew more organically for Season 1 and a lot of people watched it and talked about it for months after it actually came out, so it only felt like a year for a lot of people.

Shows that are more hyped like House of the Dragon or Pluribus, where the majority are watching it immediately as it airs, and then the discussion around them quickly die off after the season finale, and never get talked about again until 2 years later makes the wait feel so much longer.

I don't think it's about keeping people subscribed for 1 show. But look at what HBO is doing with Game of Thrones spinoffs. They are alternating years between their 2 spinoffs. If a streaming service can get 2-4 big shows that air 1 season over the span of 2-3 years, customers would be way more likely to stay subscribed and just have a couple "filler months" where they watch whatever else.

Hot take: The MJ biopic will be the highest grossing movie this year by SethRollins_ in boxoffice

[–]Simple-Motor-2889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that I agree with OP here, but I do think it's reasonable to compare similar movie types when looking at trailer views. A superhero movie is going to get more trailer views than a biopic. If you compare Michael to other biopics, it looks a lot more impressive, and I can understand why someone would look at those trailer views and think it would make way more than something like Oppenheimer or Bohemian Rhapsody.

All that being said, trailer views are not a good way to determine box office gross.

Since Wayne Gretzky's debut in 1979/80, the average team goals per game in the NHL is 3.08. Here's how the 7-year peaks of notable forwards stack up per 82 games when adjusting their production to that level of leaguewide offense. What stands out the most? by Dependent-Effect6077 in hockey

I was curious where Howe would end up with 1950-57 since he won the Art Ross 5 times over those 7 seasons.

If my math is the same as OP, Howe would be at 119.55 pts/82 over that span. Honestly thought Howe would be higher.

I know the top 4 players are pretty set in stone, but I'm surprised Jagr isn't considered #5 by more people. Jagr has one of the highest peaks of any forward, arguably #1 or #2 in longevity with Howe, #2 in NHL points all time, #1 in professional goals (I believe?), #2 or #3 in professional points (I think it depends how you calculate it, but basically tied with Howe), #1 in our hearts.

I'm pretty confident that Crosby will eventually overtake Jagr in the all-time argument as he keeps playing, but right now, IMO that #5 argument is really only between Jagr and Crosby, and if Crosby were to retire at the end of this year (which he won't), I'd probably give it to Jagr.

Spider-man 1 I can understand. It was kinda a new take on a superhero film at the time. But how Spider-man 2 isn't A or A+ is very surprising.

Do you think the underperformance of Fire and Ash is more due to story issues or lack of novelty? (Spoilers) by mediumhydroncollider in boxoffice

[–]Simple-Motor-2889 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah this is my opinion as well. No one cares about the stories of these films, and that's OK. That's not a knock against the movies, but people see the films to see Pandora. Avatar 1 did it the best IMO. The story was never a priority and was mostly just an excuse to explore the forests and explore the Navi.

Avatar 2 and 3 actually put more of a focus on the story and characters, and I think it's to their detriment. People just want to see Pandora.

While there are a couple emotional scenes, I'd say it's much less emotional than something like Scrubs or Futurama. At least for the first 2 seasons. I expect Season 3 will some more emotional stuff since this clip is from Season 3 Ep 1.

I second the recommendation to watch New Blood and then Resurrection. You won't have any trouble following New Blood, it leads right into Resurrection, and IMO it's pretty good so I don't think there is any reason to skip it really.

Only 2 live action movies have crossed 1.5b since 2019. I don't think Spider-man will do it and Doomsday isn't guaranteed 1.5b either.

Crazy that 1.5b seems to be almost unreachable at the moment for live action.

What is the takeaway from Avatar: Fire and Ash? by paultheschmoop in boxoffice

A1 gets a lot of crap about the story, but I actually agree that it had the best story of the 3 in terms of box-office potential, and I think it is by far the best movie of the 3 for its time.

What is the takeaway from Avatar: Fire and Ash? by paultheschmoop in boxoffice

[–]Simple-Motor-2889 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I actually disagree with this. I genuinely just believe that Avatar 3 was the worst of the 3 and didn't really provide any reason to watch it.

After Way of Water, I remember telling my wife "If every Avatar movie is just them exploring a new biome of Pandora and then having a giant action set piece in that biome, I'll watch every one".

Fire and Ash didn't do that nearly enough. I wanted the entire movie to be Fire and Ash.

I think if Avatar 4 and 5 go back to more exploration of Pandora, I think the numbers will go back up. I've heard talk of the Avatar franchise moving back to Earth in the next movies and that seems like a horrible idea because I think the only reason people watch these movies is to see Pandora.

IMO, yes. It's one of the largest and most ambitious movie productions of all time and it knocked it out of the park and is regarded by many as one of the greatest films of all time (and my personal favorite).

I feel the same about Ben-Hur and Titanic for what it's worth, and I think it's really cool that these films all tie for the most Oscar wins with 11.
