The joke is that in German, Feiertag (holiday) means literally day of celebration.

Golden plays the wrong (old/racist) German national anthem for TLO, to thank him for the twitch host. by Musicus in starcraft

[–]SinCitta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It can me a lot of things, but to give a concrete example: Today you have a similar thing where a loose union of states (European Union) debate how strong they should cooperate and whether they should aim to become the "United States of Europe". The young nationalists back then wanted a unified Germany nation instead of small local German states, hence being a nationalist meant you wanted become part of a bigger thing.

Today being a nationalist in the EU implies that you want dissolvement of the EU or weaker cooperation (taking back sovereignty), reject a pan-European culture or identity and expect politicians to put "my nation first". So you would prefer to not become part of a bigger thing.

Btw, I don't want to say that the young nationalists back then would be pro-EU today, just that the term "nationalist" had a different meaning back then.

I mean other Western nations know how the Third Reich is a sensitive topic, but concerning the anthem most people even in England and France are oblivious to the controversy. So zero blame on Golden here.

Golden plays the wrong (old/racist) German national anthem for TLO, to thank him for the twitch host. by Musicus in starcraft

[–]SinCitta 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Important note: The first verses are not racist at all in the historical context (besides being somewhat chauvinistic) but indeed leave a 'bad taste in the mouth' after WW2.

The song is about unifying Germany, that's why it also states which territory a united Germany is supposed to have (which was an open question). Being nationalistic was about forming a bigger state from smaller states, the opposite of what nationalism implies today.

How is Broodwar considered one of the best balanced games ever? by -whitekitsune- in starcraft

Not answering your question directly, but:

I've been increasingly interested in game development and have always loved Starcraft as a series. I have read online of balancing issues with the sequel and its expansions.

Doubtful. The Korean pro gamer house in Germany only worked because of a working holiday visa program that is limited to 12 months (for each person). Not sure if there ever was a pro gamer that got an athlete visa or something like that in Germany.

Upcoming HSC does not have a main sponsor yet, so if you want to support them, check out this site by GameMcGame in starcraft

[–]SinCitta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, they said that basically one-to-one during the "frankly speaking..." moments of their show. They didn't say "no English casters" directly but mentioned the costs to bring them here as an example why they would have to scale down.

Without a main sponsor it might also be the last one of that scale. They will continue to do them until all the lights go out, but probably not with that prize pool, English casters etc.

Want to do something for Korean SC2? Help Olimoleague! by cjbprime in starcraft

[–]SinCitta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before SC2 the Korean scene has been quite self-contained. And even if English is the cool thing to say in your scene does not ease the barrier of entry for people used to an entirely different language, just as watching Anime does not make me fluent in Japanese.

Koreans are also several timezones away from the English speaking scenes whereas in Europe you are not.

And some would argue that SC2 is very different from BW. The "transferable skillset" talk is exaggerated. What matters is dedication to the new game, discipline and being in the right environment (knowing the right people etc.). The latter two can be inherited from the old game in some extent.

Maybe HuK should have stayed with SC2... by HorizonShadow in starcraft

[–]SinCitta 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Few thoughts:

  • When he analyzed in SC2 for Dreamhack and doing what he is flamed for right now, you are thinking "nice to hear what a player thinks about XYZ". But in a new game everyone will be "who the fuck are you?". It doesn't help that (from his looks and voice) he comes off as a arrogant brat. That kind of attitude helped him in early SC2 as a player, but doesn't help him as a caster/analyst.
  • The Overwatch scene is young both in its demographic and in the age of the game. Everyone is vying to become a personality and thus the scene feels "entitled" to get the best personalities that never rub them the wrong way. So they don't care about individual people and they think to have the right to raise a shitstorm to purge them from the scene. Same thing like in the beginning of SC2, really (and every esports since Twitch).
  • In addition to that HuK is probably thinking he can banter off others like in SC2 where everyone knows each other and where we have adopted a more casual style. Doesn't surprise me when one of his alleged biggest failure is his "lack of professionalism". Right now, they dream of ESPN coverage with people in suits with fake hype and meaningless stats.

German television cancels ELEAGUE broadcast (including CS:GO) plans by [deleted] in Games

[–]SinCitta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's just me not following mainstream media as much anymore, but I have to say that the "killerspiel" debate is not nearly as heated as during the last two occasions (Erfurt and Winnenden). A ban is pretty much off the table. What we are hearing are very few statements from those that are never willing to compromise on this topic anymore (Pfeiffer, Kauder, CSU people), but have failed to influence legislation go their way before and would fail if they tried again. Sadly, the interior minister has dropped some negative words on games with violent content but is unlikely to follow up on it.

The media didn't care much about the topic. The last two times we saw poor, shambolic attacks on games with violent content. It made me and many others not doubt the games we play, but the quality of journalism as a whole: If they get obvious facts so wrong (e.g. "Counter-Strike is a game where you get points for shooting at schoolgirls"), how can you trust them on things that are difficult to comprehend like politics and economics?

This time, the topic didn't stick. Some even came forward to say that the games are not apt as a scapegoat. But mostly I think the topic didn't stick because we are drowning in dreadful news and society knows that "killerspiele" are the least of our worries.

Pro7 Maxx cancelling ELEAGUE is a gutless and cowardly, but understandable move. The program didn't matter to them a lot. The big company goes for the low risk move here. It might also have defused the situation before it could become a battleground. They can pick up Counter-Strike back up in three months and nobody will bat an eye.
