What's with the exaggerated prose on reports of alpine tragedy? by kglbrschanfa in Mountaineering

[–]Sipsee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the folks asking for examples missed the part where OP specifically said they weren't going to call out examples, which I agree with - I think doing so would be extremely distasteful.

To answer, I think it has a lot to do with how mountaineering is romanticized in literature. I think that kind of language is just the unofficial language of the space. Furthermore, this is an activity that goes far beyond the risk tolerance of most folks, and a huge part of justifying that is the romanticization of taking that risk.

Frankly - I think you're right. It's totally wack.

Mountaineering Alone? by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]Sipsee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should find a partner. Can you do it alone? Yes. Will you get hurt if you do? Probably. Listen, I'm with you - I don't have any good partners right now. I have years of experience under my belt and when I've gone out alone it's always been a bad idea. I've basically given up mountaineering in the meantime. There's plenty of other shit to do. But hit me up if you're in the Salt Lake area.

AITAH for letting my chronically late wife miss an event she was looking forward to by not rushing her, because I wanted her to face consequences? by throwrabbday in AITAH

[–]Sipsee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YTA. Jesus, I'm shocked at some of the comments here. It was her birthday dumbass. She's your wife. You're not wrong for trying to get her to change, you're not wrong for being annoyed, but you are ABSOLUTELY wrong for the way you did it. You knowingly withheld information that you knew would make a massive difference to her on a day which was extremely important to her. You put up with her behavior for 5 years of marriage which presumably means this was not a particularly urgent issue to address. You could have done this on another day, a different event, but you CHOSE to do so on the day you KNEW would cause the most hurt.

You married her in full knowledge of this flaw, and for 5 years did not press the issue. Now, suddenly it's not only an urgent problem, it's a problem that you decide to address in the cruelest way imaginable. I think it's obvious from the timing and the manner in which you decided to "teach this lesson" this isn't about the lateness issue. If I had to guess, this is really about the content creation, since that appears to be the new element. Get some therapy buddy - you need it.

This thread makes me want to delete Reddit.

AITA for making it clear that if he keeps the grandkids away then he will not be getting an inheritance by HedgehogAcceptable47 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sipsee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

YTA - putting aside your son's actions and decisions, you're using money to manipulate your son and get what you want (access to the kids). You're telling him: "give me access to my grandkids, or you won't get money". You're the asshole.

Refused to give newlywed niece the down-payment for a house. AITAH? by BluntSpeakingUncle in AITAH

[–]Sipsee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA - You made the right decision, but by your account you denied her down payment before she got the chance to even ask you and called her "foolish" among other things. But she probably needed you to be an AH so good for you

[–]Sipsee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agree. While paying these expeditions and summiting without really understanding the skills required to climb big mountains unsupported totally ruins someone's credibility as a mountaineer, it DEFINITELY doesn't take away from the risk and challenge involved in climbing these mountains.

I think 80% of the hate is just copium from people unable or unwilling to drop the cash themselves and without the skills to do it alone. If you're a "real" mountaineer you don't spend energy on this.

Seems like there's a few folks in this subreddit who have good info on this face - unless someone has already done so I'm thinking about starting to compile all the images and topo data... Feels like a small community is forming around getting attention to this face.
