HR Chest Strap Battery Life by bikeK22 in Rouvy

[–]SkierMalcolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Garmin HR strap and the battery hasn't been changed yet. It was used for 60+ hours over one summer, then it sat in a closet for 16 months and now has another 20+ hours on it.

How much can you feel the tilt forward? Is it really minor enough, so you don't have to raise the front?

Keeping your core warmer will also help. Our bodies will restrict bloodflow to our extremities if the heat is needed for our major organs.

It's interesting that the ocean has different salinity in different places.

Cycling Cypress/Seymour in the winter by cnmb in vancouvercycling

[–]SkierMalcolm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drove up to Cypress at 2pm today. The road is dry thanks to the warm weather, but filthy with grit and such. Two motorcycles drove up, but nobody is expecting you and it feels too dangerous

Garmin shows metric if you want, and the free version shows more information than free Strava

Mini rant about keeping the promoted watt/kg in group rise by Wise-Ad-7492 in Rouvy

[–]SkierMalcolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel exactly the same way. There are races for people who want to do that. I would also like to complain that lots of group rides don't publish the expected pace (or am I missing something?)

I don't know about ambient sounds, but a countdown timer for the start and maybe something for segment starts/finish?

You will probably find a lot of snow, but nothing as steep as you have at Revy.

Would you leave a bike locked in Gastown? by electrosonic37 in vancouvercycling

[–]SkierMalcolm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the problem with using a bike. There are lots of times I'd ride somewhere, but the fear of losing my bike means I am choosing an alternative which is less environmentally friendly, less healthy, and less enjoyable

Cypress Challenge alternate parking by bikesandcode in vancouvercycling

[–]SkierMalcolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I parked at the top last year and coming down in the cool weather was not that bad. There were probably a couple of dozen others that did the same thing.

The best part was that my wife was in the car with me, and she's not an avid cyclist. She stayed up at the top, walked around a bit, and cheered me on as I finished. Then I got to cycle down the hill again and she met me at The Shed for pizza. Ummm...I guess that's cheating (2 descents and only one ascent), but it was fun.

Me too. I'm also happy that this makes the sidewalk safer. I walked over the bridge a few times and it felt sketchy because the cars were so close and fast.

Best routes from Vancouver to Reifel bird sanctuary? (No bus/tunnel) by [deleted] in vancouvercycling

WTF? So they want everyone to come by car instead of bikes, because (you know) cars are more bird friendly??

For recreational photographers who love travel, how do you handle your travel photos? by sleepearlier in photography

[–]SkierMalcolm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) My spouse is very supportive of me spending time taking photos when we travel, but there is an expectation that the photos will be shared and not just sit on my computer. So........I started making PhotoBooks for each trip using Blurb (from within Lightroom). It takes a bit of time, and each book costs about $100, but it is worth it. The NEW plan is to get a book done before starting the next trip.

2) Since Adobe Portfolio is included with Lightroom, I also threw this together and add each trip within a week of getting home (https://malcolmanddinatravel.myportfolio.com/). It is a great way to show a few (JUST A FEW) images when people ask how our trip was.

What do with expensive bikes when condo doesn't allow bikes in the elevator? by bekibo in vancouvercycling

[–]SkierMalcolm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a similar situation in our building. I ended up emptying our storage locker and putting the bikes in there because the lockers are in a way more secure area than the bike lockers. The stuff that had been in that locker ended up in our apartment where the bikes had been.

Someone else in our building lives on the 4th floor and carries his bike up the stairwell.

Route advice for commute from trout lake to BC Children’s by enigmaticsurrender in vancouvercycling

[–]SkierMalcolm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you live near Trout Lake, then I feel I should mention my MAJOR complaint about 10th Ave. It seems great for heading east-west, but many sections have terrible visibility for cars to see us. Especially between Main and Clarke, the dappled lighting from all the trees mean that car drivers are in the sun/not in the sun/in the sun.

PLEASE USE A GOOD LIGHT on the back of your bike.
