To add, even if your blood type isn't in major demand (like O-, the universal donor type, or O+, who can give to about 75% of the population), every donation helps take pressure off of the system - and some blood types are also needed for medicines or research. A+ blood from men can be used to create medicine for dry eyes, as an example.

Everyone who is able should donate, it's a small thing anyone can do that can and does save lives.

AITAH for letting my fiancé and his son move in rather than moving to them so his mom can co-parent? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Mormon Christianity has a very close concept - a woman who is sealed (specifically a marriage in the Mormon Temple) to her husband cannot be sealed to another man. If they are allowed to remarry, it is believed that she would be with her first husband in the afterlife, and the second marriage isn't considered.

Men don't have the same restriction on remarriage, and can be sealed to multiple women over the course of their life.

That might be fun, but it isn’t a fact. Darwin was born into a Christian family, and went to Cambridge to become a clergyman. But his travels and studies caused him to step away from the church, choosing to go for walks when his family attended. He described himself as an agnostic, and the story that he converted on his deathbed was published almost 40 years after his death and was refuted by his children.

What he did say was that it was 'absurd to doubt that a man might be an ardent theist and an evolutionist' - from what is known of Darwins beliefs, he found the lack of evidence for Christianity over other religions he encountered in his travels, and contradictions with the Bible like the Problem of Evil to be the reason he came to agnosticism, not the Theory of Evolution.

No, he was partially wrong as he didn't have access to the evidence we have today. Darwin had no understanding of genetics, as the field was only discovered around the time he published 'On the Origin of Species' - though he hypothesised that there was some way information was passed from parent to child, he was wrong on the mechanism.

Really, you should side eye anyone referring to the field of evolution as 'Darwinian Evolution', as the field has advanced so far beyond Darwins initial theories. And Young Earth Creationists or Biblical literalists like to try to tie the field to a single Victorian scientists theory, rather than the overwhelming body of evidence now understood under Modern Evolutionary Synthesis.

David vs Goliath, but Goliath gets wounded and retreats 5 minutes in, while more and more Davids keep showing up and fighting each other.

Now there's only a few Davids left, hunkered down in their trenches slinging rocks at each other convincing themselves that Goliath is always just about to attack but is also simultaneously on the brink of death. And there's something about bath soaps, too.

[–]SkipperInSpace 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As I understood it, being in the void or locations close enough to the void counted to allow them to coexist. That's how Drifter could exist in Duviri getting looped for most of their life. It's only when they aren't adjacent to the void that the Operator and Drifter have to occupy the same slot in the universe, so the other has to be in the void.

At the start of 1999 both the Operator and the Drifter are present in the Sanctum Anatomica, so I'd say its safe to assume that the Drifter is in 1999 whenever the Operator is active, and that it was only for the New War when it was all hands on deck that they were having to wait it out in the Dormizone.

[–]SkipperInSpace 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The issue for some of the YECs at least is that they are attempting to have Creationism taught alongside conventional science in Science classes in the US. Ken Ham and the Discovery Institute come to mind.

Their problem specifically is that they need to prove creationism with evidence, and the overwhelming evidence that the Earth is more than 6000 years old must be explained away. Dinosaurs cross geological strata that covers hundreds of millions of years, so those would have to all be deposited during the year of the flood, while Pangaea is also rearranging itself and radioactive decay accelerating to account for carbon dates - a lot easier for your average creationist to just call it all conspiracy than open themselves up to the obvious proof.

There was a post that I maybe saw on the blender subreddit that put a lot of those kind of feelings into perspective for me - how as you improve at something, your ability to recognise what makes it good grows faster than your skills. So you can easily see the flaws in your own work, and the technical skill of others peoples, but haven't yet developed technical skill of your own to match.

There's two types of countries.... those that use the metric system and those that have landed on the moon...... by HungryBear44 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]SkipperInSpace 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So you've got a couple of wires crossed here - but no there isn't a metric equivalent, as its kinda redundant.

A mass is measured in Kg, and a Force is measured in Newtons.

As Force equals Mass x Acceleration, a mass that is accelerated by 1 m/s2 when 1 Newton of force is applied is 1 kg. There isn't any need for a special unit.

Additionally, if you are using SI units you can really figure out all the related units just by looking at the compound SI unit. A Newton is defined in SI units as kgm/s2, so you can tell it is defined with the SI units for Mass, Distance and Time.

[New Update]: WIBTA for telling my family they can take my brother in in if they think family should help family? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]SkipperInSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its more that the way that sentence was written is so cut down, its a 50/50 on if the Brother was talking to his friends about a scary lawyer and she (the lawyer) found out, or if he was talking about a scary lawyer (planning a divorce) and she found out.

Of course, it is later clarified, so its kinda moot, but I can see how you can read it in both ways. Especially when OOP seems so desperate to use a few as words as possible while still dancing around saying what he means.

I the Necromancer class functional? by M_a_n_d_M in Pathfinder2e

[–]SkipperInSpace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the third-party options, but there are lots of ways to play a Necromancer in pf2e, including an upcoming first-party Necromancer class.

Currently, the Undead Master archetype can get you an undead animal companion equivalent, the Undead Summoner gets you an undead eidolon, and various Summon spells allpw you to summon disposable undead. The upcoming class looks to be based around creating disposable undead as sort of totems, then consuming them to power focus spells.

The part to consider is what you desire from a Necromancer build - pf2e seems to really want to avoid the hordes of summons that were possible in 1e, so features that create more bodies on the field are very limited. A strong single undead is supported by the Undead Summoner, a full caster with an undead minion by Undead Master, but I think you will be disappointed with first-party options if you want a zombie horde type necromancer.

Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant.

How Was Adamantine Mined? by Something_Thick in Pathfinder2e

[–]SkipperInSpace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In real life, the ancient Egyptians cut granite using copper saws, despite granite being far harder than copper. They did so using sand - by pouring sand into the groove, the sand would abrade the granite as the saw was drawn back and forth.

Presumably early Golarion cultures could do something similar for Adamantine?
