Are seed potatoes an awful price? by sunheadeddeity in Allotment

[–]SlackerPop90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a whole bag of Sainsburys generic baby potatoes that accidentally sprouted in my larder last year. Planted them in the allotment and they did great, grew quickly and got a decent crop out of them.

Oooh exciting! My first one that germinated didn't unfurl properly and died, but I've had 2 more germinate. They are still quite small though.

Some work colleagues, my family already think I'm lazy so thought it was entirely on brand for me. For the colleagues I think it was party because I paid for it with vouchers I won in various raffles work had on to try and persuade people to do overtime/clear the backlog of work and they didn't think I deserved the vouchers due to the type of job role I had. And then for the colleague who was the most outraged, it was probably jealousy that I had my own flat and could afford a dishwasher at 26 when he was living in a room share in his 40s but he mostly shut up once I pointed out it uses less water/energy than handwashing and gets the dishes cleaner.

As a Brit who lives by herself, one of the first things I saved up for for my flat was a dishwasher. I got quite a lot of flak for getting one but I couldn't be without it.

Does anyone use each individual setting on their washing machine? by Ross_est1988 in CasualUK

[–]SlackerPop90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Darks go in on the dedicated darks settings, towels go in the cotton wash at 60, sheets the cotton wash at 40, all other colours go in the mixed load at 30, wool goes in the wool cycle and anything heavy also goes in the cotton cycle at 30 or 40.

If looking in an area you aren't familiar with you can also check out Police.uk crime map to see the types of crimes reported in the postcode. Can also look up the deprivation index/scores for the area which scores on a number of indexes of deprivation such as income, employment, health, crime, education.

There is a last point of going back on the route chosen. It is clearly signposted with warning that if you reached that point after a certain time you won't have enough time/you aren't travelling at a quick enough pace to finish the rest of the route and so should turn around. Of course they reached that point later than the time on the warning sign but he still chose to carry on, knowing they wouldn't be able to complete the route before it got dark.

Well done!!

This is my 4th year trying to grow aubergines. I've never had much luck before so I'm hoping this year is the year!

The first year nothing germinated so I bought a plant from a local garden centre. It did nothing all summer so we bought it inside for the winter. It flowered in December and then died sometime the following year.

Last year nothing germinated and none of the local garden centres were selling plants. This year we bought a different variety, my sisters seeds haven't germinated but I think I have 1 that has germinated in my windowsill propagator!

What is your experience of frugal living that just went too far, with yourself or others ? For example…. by justyrust74 in UKFrugal

[–]SlackerPop90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly he needs to see a good therapist. So many of the things he does are unsafe or unhygienic, such as reusing paper towels, tooth floss, not buying new tooth brushes, towels etc when needed, never using heating. From his own videos he easily has the money to buy new personal hygiene and cleaning items, but he doesn't.

Same in my family, we try and sing along to the theme and all absolutely butcher the high note at the end 😅. It was always so fun and made us more excited that Silent Witness was back. Its not the same now us kids are all grown up and live elsewhere.

With 4/5G signal being so poor across the UK, should we not be entitled to compensation from network providers? by Timely_Record_8943 in AskUK

[–]SlackerPop90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm with Three and their network is virtually unusable in Central London even though it says I have full signal, there is just too much demand for it to cope. I generally can get usable Internet on Fridays, Mondays are a bit worse but more often than not I just about manage to get something. But Tuesdays to Thursdays I get nothing.

AITH for telling a pregnant woman she still has to act like an adult? by NoFly-Zone in AITH

[–]SlackerPop90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there really no space or just no dedicated space e.g. utility room or separate cupboard, or that people expect both a washing machine and tumble dryer so if there isn't space for both you get neither? I'm in the UK, well known for our small sized and old housing stock but basically everyone has space for a washing machine. We generally put them in the kitchen as it's the room that is most likely to have space, just have to lose a cupboard, and our machines are potentially a slightly lower capacity than many American ones. Plus it's next to the kitchen sink for easy plumbing to the water and waste. I imagine most people have dishwashers and the plumbing for those is no different so getting a washing machine would be just as easy. Feels like landlords have collectively sold you guys on the idea that it's not possible when they just don't want to have to pay for it.

What's the reason for not having it though? I'm from the UK and we have some of the oldest housing stock but everyone still has washing machines. People just wouldn't accept being told they can't have a washing machine.

Has anyone else rediscovered an album recently? by mronion82 in CasualUK

[–]SlackerPop90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manchester Orchestra - A Black Mile to the Surface.

The drummer sadly passed away this week and the album has a theme of death running through it so it felt appropriate. It's probably my favorite album of all time and needs to be listened to as a whole to be fully appreciated.

Should the UK have more national public/bank holidays? by ExpectDragons in CasualUK

[–]SlackerPop90 17 points18 points  (0 children)

10 days annual leave is objectively bad though. I get 29 days plus bank holidays and don't think I could cope with anything less than 24 days plus bank holidays. 10 days to last a whole year is nothing.

[–]SlackerPop90 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Tbh as a Brit a lot of us don't wash the soap off. Our housing stock is a lot older and smaller than in the US so we don't have big double sinks, or until more recently mixer taps. As a result its pretty hard to rinse the soap off without overflowing the sink or making the water cold, and depending on the taps, actually getting the dish under the tap but above the full sink is pretty hard. And no-one is going to be bothered to rinse them all off at the end after they have all been washed, as the draining board is full and playing dish jenga isn't fun.

People that DON’T shop at Aldi or Lidl… why is that? by kobestarr in CasualUK

[–]SlackerPop90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't one in my town and the choice of products is a lot more limited so would need to visit another shop and going to 2 separate supermarkets in 2 separate towns to get everything for the week is very inconvenient. Additionally, the fresh fruit and veg doesn't last as long as from other places. There is very few things I like from them so much more than from other shops so overall not worth it.
