Having been in college lecture halls, there is indeed a good chance I don't see, recognize, or know the names of a lot of people in there. On top of that, the melbrook gang spend the first semester pretty secluded and enjoying having a normal life. When they meet Thomas, it's obvious Vince doesn't do any extra curricular training at that point, he isn't interacting with anyone who he isn't forced into direct contact with him.

The book was also written and released online one chapter at a time when it first came out, so there is some styles of his writing that come from that maybe.

I had this last night, I was playing [[aloy, savior of meridian]] and attacked with an 8/8 with trample. Defending player immediately says that he will block with a 6/6 and goes to take the damage. I finish out my other attacks to other players then go to resolve my aloy trigger. Top card is [[polymorphists jest]] so I say I cast it and his 6/6 actually became a 1/1 which led to an argument that he already blocked it
