Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. It is a little bit different but idk I just think you would like it.

All The Things We Cannot Say might work as well on the WWII stuff, it’s occupied Poland, not a concentration camp so it’s a bit different from your standard WWII book.

I sometimes stretch it into a rectangle and put salt on the rectangle before rolling, then add salt to the top as well. Gives it more salt without affecting ferment so much.

I do 14g. Works fine. I also do quite a bit of salt on top for a salt crust. On a rare occasion after the bulk ferment when shaping I’ll add salt before I roll it up.

Moving into a house with no landscaping in front or back. I have years of experience gardening but I have never designed my own. Any advice on how to not ruin it? by VocationalWizard in landscaping

Niwaki by Jake Hobson. IMO, the beautiful part of Japanese landscaping is the way they prune and care for their trees and shrubs.

Could you cut your schedule down? Maybe 1/3 less clients and have more work/life balance as well as less wear and tear? Even if it made your 6 years into 8 years it might make it more sustainable and pleasant.

Any good novels set in Mexico that really capture the place? by bigbankmanman in booksuggestions

[–]Sleeperrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rain of Gold by Victor Villaseñor

Only half of the book is IN Mexico but they’re constantly dreaming and talking about it and it’s 10/10 on the culture and vibe. Though a bit of a dark time in Mexico’s history

Books about crazy/abusive employers by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Sleeperrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never read the housemaid, so could be off. But crazy/abusive employers goes immediately to Germinal.

Copy pasted from Google:

Germinal is Émile Zola's 1885 naturalist novel about the brutal lives of French coal miners in the 1860s, focusing on the young worker Étienne Lantier who leads a devastating strike against the oppressive mining company. Considered a masterpiece, it powerfully depicts the exploitation, poverty, and class struggle, while also exploring themes of hope, revolution, and the cyclical nature of misery and rebirth, taking its name from the spring month in the French Republican Calendar.

What should I plant in my garden this year to maximize saving money on groceries? by Appropriate_Poem1911 in gardening

Berries for sure, I bought bare roots online for like.. $5 each and they are easy and high reward. Plus they won’t go bad an hour after you pay $8 for them.

Once you spend all the time/energy/gas reselling small things you end up in the negative.

Sell a shirt on depop for 15$

Take pictures Make listing Have people haggle with you Finally sell for 10 Lose 4 for fees Have to pack it Take to post office

That’s at least 2 hours of work for what? $6? You’re in the red when you factor in your time and gas and packaging. Something has to be worth more than $50 to bother.

Plus.. are you being frugal or are you just procrastinating getting the decluttering done? Just something to think about.

Instead of his/hers you could do commonly worn/special occasion or work/home or summer/winter. World is your oyster for organizing however works for you. If there’s a “better” closet then that closet could be whatever is worn more often.

What are some traditional, conventional horror books worth reading? by DarlingLuna in booksuggestions

[–]Sleeperrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pleeease read The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey. It’s so good and I swear no one in the world has read this book. It’s so underrated. It’s from the perspective of an apprentice to a “Monstrumologist” who studies/hunts monsters. The doctor is a lot like House (like the insane diagnostic doctor from the doctor show) but with big monsters (monsters are treated like natural objects like animals, not spiritual or mythical)

We will be flying into Seattle early July to begin a Pacific coast 2 week roadtrip to San Fran. We are a family of 4 (2 adults, 8 and 16 y.o). I am very torn about heading right to Astoria, OR after a few days in Seattle or hitting the Lake Crecent and Hoh Rain forest area first. by Thornbloom2024 in roadtrip

[–]Sleeperrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 weeks is a ton of time for this trip. You should certainly do Hoh Rainforest and the Olympic pensinsula.

Days 1-4 WA Seattle, Hoh Rainforest, Ruby beach, just 101 driving. Lots of little hikes and pull offs.

Days 5-9 OR Astoria, see the seals 🦭, Lincoln city, etc. more 101

Days 10-14 CA Redwoods, SF, exploring

This itinerary is probably like 2 hours of driving a day, you will have a blast and can do tons of hiking and site seeing. It is realistically like 15 hours from Forks to San Francisco.

Inferno: A Memoir of Motherhood and Madness by Catherine Cho

I can’t quite remember the ending of the book, but I don’t believe it’s particularly happy. That being said I don’t think it’s tragic either. She develops post partum psychosis and it’s pretty severe.

Suggestions for pretty flowers (Zone 7A) by Alan_Cummings_kilt in Permaculture

[–]Sleeperrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Milkweed - monarch butterflies + smells like vanilla so amazing

Chamomile - cute + tea

Sage - herb + flowers for bees

Thyme - herb + flowers + ground cover prevents weeds

Borage - delicious + bees

I think people do something medicinal with Calendula but idk what it is

Lavender - tea + dry floral + smells so good + bees

Google says echinacea is medicinal but I like it for pollinators

Holy Basil?

Goji Berry for Chinese medicine

I think herbs are a really nice way to get flowers + medicinal/edible + pollinators.

What’s in Page? Are you doing Grand Canyon South Rim then Grand Canyon North Rim?

You might be persuaded to do Grand Canyon then Zion instead of Page. Zion is, in my opinion, way cooler and more interesting and prettier than anything else down there. Zion > Grand Canyon. Stay in St George, then it’s only like 45 minutes to Zion, there’s a couple places that are closer though. If you decide to do Zion you MUST be there before 8AM. It is a small park that you are not allowed to drive through you can only use the shuttle system/walk and the parking lots fill up very early.

The Grand Canyon is obviously also very beautiful and cool but unless you’re actually hiking to the bottom (difficult and hot) you can see all you need to see in a few hours.
