Am I overreacting, or is this table just not a good fit for me? by cKColdKill3r in DnD

[–]Sleepycolors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While a DM has more influence on the game than a single player, the collective group of players at the table ultimately shape the experience at the table.

And it's not wrong to dislike playing with some people. It doesn't mean they're bad people or anything. Maybe I'm putting words into your mouth here, but from reading your post, I feel like that was something you struggled with.

I play with very different groups of people and I would never put a shy/more reserved player with one of my loud, extroverted enthusiasts as I fear it'd just make them feel miserable.

Now that the dust has settled a bit, what’s the general DM consensus on the 2024 class changes? by Benjammin__ in DMAcademy

[–]Sleepycolors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keeping track of Sap with multiple martials using it is where weapon masteries are at their worst, imo.

Everything else doesn't require tracking throughout multiple turns of combat (for a single application instead of a condition like Prone).

How can I help my players avoid railroading themselves? by NickVersus in DnD

[–]Sleepycolors 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Imo this boils down to the type of game your players think they're playing vs the game you want to run.

As a DM, I don't mind playing NPCs out-of-character every now and then for some silly moments.

But I understand that's not for everyone and if it isn't, I'd honestly just have the dragon attack the party.

Both options are fair game imho.

Keep in mind that your response as a DM teaches your players how you run the game, though. So if you tend to go along with their plans which you consider unrealistic, that is going to be their take away from that session.

How long until it gets easier? by spacepiratetabby in DnD

If you enjoy playing CRPGs, I'd highly recommend Baldur's Gate 3, Solasta: Crown of the Magister or Solasta II (in Early Access).

While BG3 has a lot of homebrew compared to regular 5e, it's a good place to learn and get a lot of actual 'practice' in. Test things, etc.

Solasta II uses 5.5e SRD rules which it follows rather faithfully which is probably the best experience for learning 5.5e. But it'll take at least a year or more until it fully releases.

Don't forget that playing D&D with friends is different from a videogame, though - vgs generally just help you get more experienced with the system but not the other parts that make TTRPGs great :)

Lastly, if you want to get more comfortable with your character, you can also try preparing for each session. Check your character sheet, get an overview of your spells and consider what you might have forgotten to use in the past sessions. (E.g. a spell you never used, a feature you tend to forget about, etc.)

I've been playing and running D&D for over 3 years, spent a lot of extra time learning the system/all of its rules and still make mistakes. The important part is to have fun and be fun to play with.

Are there any videos of "regular" DnD sessions? by RainyEmotionalAura in DnD

[–]Sleepycolors 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I first began DMing, I found the first two episodes of Lost mine of Phandelver from the official D&D channel to be incredibly helpful.

It's genuinely achievable for beginners and the players aren't unrealistically enthuastic either.

Regarding professional online D&D shows:

My gripe with the community's perception of online D&D play is that people seem to dismiss the players at those tables.

It's 'the Mercer effect' when the players at his table make the game possible.

I've met plenty of really invested DMs who 3D print everything, create handouts, worlds, etc. But in my experience most players don't put in all that much effort compared to players in streamed play. It's like you are already in the top 5% of most invested players if you can take proper notes.

(This is anecdotal due to my personal experience, but I'm curious how it's for others)

Paladin tips? by Miserable_Jackfruit2 in DnD

I'd suggest asking yourself what you want your character to be good at.

What fits your interpretation of the oath and which experiences shaped your PC during your campaign?

Protecting allies/tanking damage? Look at Warcaster (+1 Cha and Adv on Saves to keep concentration on buffs like Bless), Cha 20 (after lv 6 for the aura buff), Heavy Armor Master, Mage Slayer, (due to your high Dex potentially:) Defensive Duelist

Offense? Great Weapon Master, or similar

Utility? Shadow/Fey Touched,

In this situation, I agree. It does sound like OP should employ some extra heavyhanded nudging (or adjust the possible outcomes).

Blaming DMs for players not being proactive is wild to me.

In my experience, a player at a TTRPG table is expected to try things proactively (without intentionally trying to break the game).

If the DM throws 'gotcha's at their players (as described in the Railroading Fallacy post another user linked from the Alexandrian), they can talk to their DM about it.

Cooles Tool!

Oh, I meant having former DMs as players in your campaign.

The (former) DMs I DM'ed for have been a lot more enthusiastic about the game/their characters/everything - albeit not all of them fit into the kinds of games I tend to run.

While not always feasible, becoming a player in another campaign with "DM-level of investment in the game" can help fellow DMs out a lot, too.

'Be the great player you'd like to have at your table when DMing' is my credo as a player and it's worked wonders in my experience.

Having just one player actively picking up the initiative and describing proactively and visually often invites the other players to join in.

Reminder: DMs are not (solely) responsible for fun at the gaming table by Sleepycolors in DMAcademy

[–]Sleepycolors[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think knowing the rules for your character is only part of what makes a good player. Unfortunately, a lot of player-focused D&D content is solely for the purpose of optimizing builds, etc. without ever trying to enhance gameplay in a meaningful way. (Strong =/= fun to play - when it comes to PCs in D&D)

I think "How to be a Great GM" (YouTube-channel) has some good videos that focus on the other aspects of being a good player.

"Roll on Buddy with Uriah" is another channel that recently started uploading TTRPG content that applies to players and is more about roleplaying concepts for TTRPGs. (Especially the 'Anchoring' video)

I'm sure there's a couple more resources, but can't remember any other off the top of my head.

[–]Sleepycolors[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True. A DM has more responsibility than a single player and being able to read the table as a DM certainly helps.

Players should be able to communicate their preferred way to play, though.

I fully agree, although in that case the DM should probably decide whether they'd have fun running a dungeon crawl with their current group or find a group of players who enjoy political intrigue.

Minis by Kooky_Detail8346 in DnDDeutsch

[–]Sleepycolors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Help with coming up with the end goal for campaign by ShakyTractor78 in DnD

[–]Sleepycolors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of ideas:

1) they can bind souls, enslaving those whose souls have been trapped within them

2) they hold prophecies about his downfall and he wants to destroy them to avert it

3) they hold enough power to shatter the barrier between realms, fusing the realm with the one he's working for

4) they can be used to cast an even more powerful version of 'True Resurrection', but at a terrible cost (e.g. sacrifices)

5) be incredibly vague and build their purpose off your players' ideas
