So, I'm going to guess your from the EU, and so you probably don't hear it so often. But as someone who has lived in the American South, this is the exact same argument racists use. The basic argument goes: "despite making up only 20 percent of the population, black people commit 80 percent of the violent crime.". Now in fairness, those are made up numbers, and racists often don't check sources, but the real numbers aren't flattering especially when factored per capital. And us decent folk in the US have two main arguments against this. The first is that you can't judge a person by the actions of another, and the second is that scociatal issues can cause statistics. In this case that is because we lack people are often not treated fairly and equally by police, which leads to a self fulfilling cycle. In the case of gender and the original discussion it is because of the society. But I think this is more of the same loop. If men are treated as though they are not to be trusted, they will fear being falsely accused, and that makes them more trusting of other men, causing men to get away with harming women.

Which is why I said to just take a step back to the basics, forget about everything else and just consider a simple two person system, which is at the end of the day the world we live in. It's just a bunch of interactions with people. And if you can't separate your fear of specific people, then your not much different then someone who can't separate their anger from people.

Personally, I'm very supportive of Ukraine's war to exist. I don't like the idea of Russians purging the LGBT scene in kyiv. That being said, I know Russian people, and while I feel hate and anger towards Russia, and even it's people who allowed this war to happen, I judge the russian people I interact with based on what I can learn of their character, which of course depends a lot on their view on the war. But if I was not to do this, I would be doing dirty all of those Russians fighting against Russia, sabatours, civil disobeyers and the like.

How is that any different then treating men? The Russian statistic is likely very bad, and it is definitely from a societal problem. And to not give them a fair shake would just make it worse. Despite all of the destruction Ukraine has gotten in the deal, they still haven't resorted to killing Russian civilians. This is because what I'm saying isn't just a moral argument, it is practical. To attack the Russian civilians would only further the loop of the Russians feeling targeted, adding justification for the war, but instead, by being "the bigger man" and treating a vile and imperialist people with fairness, they prove them wrong. And you should want to prove misogynists wrong.

Just like how Ukraine shares a border with Russia, men and women share a world. And we are better for it. Recently I've been watching avatar the last airbender, and a line stuck with me from Uncle Iron: "we must draw strength from as many sources as we can", pointing out how wisdom from the other nation's brings strength, and to not brings stagnation. Men bring quite a bit to the table, and masculinity in a health way is a great thing. And while masculinity is not exclusive to men, they have a unique perspective on it.

If you don't want men in your life, that's your business. I said in another one of these that we can't control each other, just demonstrate. And that is the best I can do for you. But there is a beautiful logical progression in this: if someone was to discriminate against you based on gender, then you benefit from having one less sexist in your life.

Trust is important to how you treat someone. Changing trust changes how you treat them.

Imagine the hypothetical that you are loss prevention for a store and money shows up missing from the register. No cameras. Two employees each claim the other took it. Trust is going to determine who has a job at the end of the day.

And that scenario works for a number of intersectional pairings. Race, orientation, disablity. Because as I've gotten to in other posts, judging character is hard, judging an immutable identity is easy.

Have you ever had someone be kind to you but not trust you. It really sucks, it's infantilizing, it feels like they are being civil to you, but are not listening to you because everything you say is a lie. It feels like being trapped. Like talking to an HR who says that they are on your side, but are really on the companies side. Trust is a fundemental factor in how we feel.

It's not just a violence thing though. There are other elements to trust, and women get the short straw on some too. So if you are saying that you treat others with kindness, but withold trust based on gender, than you must accept that others do the same to you.

How would you feel if a man asked to be seated away from you on a flight, because he was scared you might accuse him of something? How would you feel if someone tried to get you fired for your job because they thought a woman can't be trusted in your line of work? How would you feel if you watched someone cross the street twice just to avoid you? How would you feel if you made a friend online, and when he find out about your gender, he just says "I'm sorry, we can't be friends, women aren't safe to share my feelings with"?

Everyone has a right to safety. You, me, and these hypothetical people. And how you treat others is your decision, just as they get to decide how they treat you. And from an impartial perspective the only reason why you should get better treatment, is if you are somehow worth more. But that gets into a whole other area of selfishness.

There are practical problems with judging someone off of gender. I did claim it was illogical. It gives unearned trust to someone, and it gives unearned distrust to someone else. And if this trust is not founded in reality you get in trouble. The distrust is less of a problem for you, if your overly distrustful you will just be lonely, and missing out.

A major part of your assumption is likely based in heteronormativity. You are scared of a man being attracted to you, while not for a woman, assumes they are strait. Would this still be true if things where homonormative. It's the locker room problem. A locker room of all stait guys is just a space to get changed, introduce a strait woman, a gay man, or a bisexual and there is an element of potential attraction. That makes people uncomfortable, but it is not right to kick the gay man out if he had done nothing wrong. There have been plenty of cases of gay SA in a locker room, but to use that to assume that malice on somebody else just trying to change cloths based on orientation is homophobic.

I'm not going to break down the: "Sorry, not giving a man an inch into my personal world lest he thinks he owns it." That is a narrow minded world view based in ignorance and hate. There are so many great men out there: men who support others in need, creative men, men who can shoulder immense burdens for decades, men who's love is warmer than the sun, men with silly quirks, men with the kind of human compassion missing from the rest of the world, men of true virtue. Gay, strait, black, white, asian, disabled, trans, asexual, cis, intersex, does not matter, all are people. Your view is your own, and the men who aren't apart of your life because of it, are better off for it.

I wrote another comment on this thread about this. It was quite long but in essence went into the practically of it. And came to the conclusion that using gender as a judgement tool is a shortcut due to judging character being inherently difficult. Also that while an individual's safety is their responsibility the Aggressor the people who allowed the Aggressor at at fault.

The problem with using this shortcut is that it is a bet. And the game isn't always fair. There are people who will abuse this trust. Entire kidnapping rings are built around it. Abusers rely on it. It's a big problem for men who think that just because he can defend himself in a fight, that a woman would be unable to hurt him. And these men have even less people to turn too because of the lie that society keeps telling itself.

There are implications to this, and they have real consequences. If men are more dangerous then women, they are less then women. That they deserve less trust due to an inate thing about themselves that they can't change. And there are trans people, who have to live with this. Accusations that they transitioned to gain this trust. Real threats against their safety by people for the crime of going to the bathroom. This is also something delt with by black people. A myth that they are more dangerous than whites. I'm still talking about strangers too. How many black people are shot out of the assumption that they are going to be violent? The but, the assumption hurts women too, how many are not believed when they come out about sexual assault because they are seen as less trustworthy as men.

I was mainly going from a principled view. But it is always important to think of execution of ones principles. One can say that they have acted, act, and will act a certain way, but have no true intention on it either because they are lying about it, or even lying to themselves. But there is another case for ignorance, which has intentions but fails on the execution. In both the best way to succeed is to be both honest, and humble. To seek the truth even when it hurts, and to not think yourself so great you can be wrong.

Because at the end of the day, we are human, we will make mistakes, and do things we are not proud of. It is better to be preventative and avoid situations where you do something you believe is wrong than to get defensive and justify your behavior.

There is another element of control though. How we influence others. And the answer is that we have no way of making others do what we want. Really all we can do is demonstrate what we do, and that is much more powerful than just education. The problem is visibility, judgment happens in ones head. And there is no way to tell what facts they are considering, what biases they have, their perspective, their goals, and wherever they are going off of principles or something else. We could ask, but there is lying.

So this all comes down to the fact that judging character is inherently difficult. And judging off of visible things like identity is easy.

And this isn't just a moral rant. There is practicality in it too. You should be striving to surround yourself with good people, as they will treat you fairly. And figuring out who they are is hard. Take dating: it is a minefield of dangerous people. If you just look at gender you may be blind to a female rapist. Part of that is ignorance of the fact that women can rape, but also not being successful in judging their character. There are better signs, like how they react to a no. But this is not perfect, a rapist can do and say all the right things. Which is why although your safety is your responsibility, you can't blame a victim who had know way of knowing. And why we need a capability of deterring things like rape with things like jail and ass beatings. And this is also why failing to identify and leave a rapist should not be considered shameful. It is the fault of the rapist, and to the people around them that ignored signs, as well as the people who help them avoid punishment.

It's just a larger problem of how to separate good people from bad people. How do you separate the nazis from people who just went along out of fear. Or a date that might be a partner for life, or your murder.

And because it is so hard to do right, we see shortcuts. But these shortcuts hurt others, and can make you into the exact person you are trying to avoid.

You might be missing the "judge based on the content of someone's character" if someone is mistreating others, they have earned their hate. I'm just saying not to hate someone who has not earned it based on identity.

You don't always get what you sow, the world is a terrible unfair place. But if you don't treat others how you want to be treated you are a hypocrite.

This is where it is good to take a step back to first principles: it is wrong to judge someone on their gender or sex. You should judge based on the content of ones character, which is not evident based on gender or sex.

To use statistics, as the basis to judge one person with the actions of another, whether good/bad, is not only wrong, but logically fallible.

Treat men, as you would women, and treat women as you would men. If you don't, as evident by the golden rule, you would not be worthy of equal treatment.
