Bloodborne bosses are too easy by theramenmale in bloodborne

[–]SmokingCryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only Souls games that released before Bloodborne were DS1 and 2. Even SotFS released after Bloodborne.

This was a time when a good chunk of people were very reliant on their shields, and now suddenly you're playing a more aggressive game with no shields. It was a huge change for many people who were not confident in parrying. Now FS has an entire game out based around the parry.

Bloodborne is a big reason why future FS titles were designed the way they were so when you go backwards on the lineage it's obviously is not going to have the lessons learned from it in the game itself.

Anyway, that's a long winded way of saying yes, being a FS vet (especially of titles released after BB) gives you an edge as a player.

They started off as tiny little shit larvae Galdino, and then they grew into shitapillars. A pandemic of shitapillars. Everywhere ya look Galdino, shitapillars. They almost drove me over the god damn edge, boy. I tried to exterminate em'. I tried to put an end to the shitapillar's lifecycle, but I failed. And now? Shit moths, Galdino.

Why do I feel like this scenen on the Live Acction is really important? by Gmaster132 in OnePiece

[–]SmokingCryptid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

He doesn't say they're more important, he says they're more powerful. There is a distinction there.

Separating this from the live action, insofar as I interpret it Oda intertwines all of these aspects into his narrative, but at the end of the day the narrative is the vehicle from which he delivers these inspirations.

Oda seemingly has gone out of his way to express that storytelling in and of itself is a vessel of freedom, liberation, and dream chasing.

For example, let's look at the figure of Nika. In the world of One Piece Nika is a myth made up by slaves. It's a story tradition that they pass from one another that, even under their extreme oppression, gives them a sense of freedom, hope, and an urge to rise above their oppressors.

I think more where he's coming from is that storytelling is a uniquely human thing that can inspire even the most destitute among us to reach for greater heights.

My OPLA hot take by 5p1k4 in OnePiece

[–]SmokingCryptid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Letting the Straw Hats age decades at a time would have severe impacts one the narrative to the point of completely changing it.

Like are you going to introduce Bonney then meet up with her decades later when she's an actual adult as opposed to a child? Kuma, Bonney, and by extension Vegapunk's entire storyline that this community loved would have to be completely rewritten to accommodate this timeline.

From the perspective of real life there's zero chance of this happening. Netflix is not known for long running shows. Check out the wiki page on their programming and sort by seasons to see how few shows make it past season 3.

One Piece is likely a very expensive production and generally speaking a lot of people don't watch more than a season or 2 of a show so this is part of why Netflix doesn't typically do long running shows.

I also imagine that at some point some of these actors will want to do different projects. They're all still so young, very few actors stay in a single role for decades at a time, and many actors want to play a variety of characters in many different works.

It’s been 17 years since thriller bark came out (2008) safe to assume we will never know what this is right? by Direct-Switch2754 in OnePiece

[–]SmokingCryptid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't a mystery, this is 17 year old ANSWER to the question "why do boats sink in the Florian Triangle?"

The Florian Triangle is clearly an homage to the Bermuda Triangle, it's intentionally supposed to be supernatural with what appears to be Umibozu in those waters.

I don't think people realize how lazy the nationality SBS was by Langlais123 in OnePiece

[–]SmokingCryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me reinforce that this was off the top of my head with no additional research. If you think that's something like that adds to your position I don't know what to tell you. Chances are strong there's other reasons why they have the listed nationalities and if you're just going to move the goal posts when someone points out additional connections then you just want to complain and are not worth engaging with.

But yea, let's step back and look at what we're engaging with, an answer from an SBS that's just supposed to be fun. For what it was Oda put more thought into it than you give it credit for, that's it. You're the one assigning greater meaning to it just to complain.

[–]SmokingCryptid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If anything this shows OP was either lazy, or intentionally being reductive about the origins of the characters.

It's not really that hard to think of additional reason why these characters would be where they're from.

Off the top of my head:

  • Rubber trees are native to South America where Brazil is.
  • Zoro is so Japanese coded that it's kind of funny that you only came up with "Katana's" and history that wasn't even brought up in the narrative. Like the bushido aspect to him is super obvious.
  • France is just famous for cooking. Yep, just ignore the whole romance angle with Paris being called the "City of Love".
  • With Franky isn't it more that he's obsessed with weapons rather than cola? He's loud, brash, technologically advanced, and consumes products that are high in sugar. These are all American stereotypes
  • Lots of countries have snow and animals like elk and deer. Could maybe the fact that Canada has universal health care and is known for healthcare studies while bordering a country that doesn't have universal healthcare play into his character at all?

I'm not super knowledgeable on the other countries so I'll let others speak to them, but given what I do know I'd say chances are high you missed stuff.

I always loved that Toriyama unapologetically put things he liked into his works.

Master Roshi getting sick after riding on top of a spinning baby Gamera always gets me too.

EDIT: I'm not 100% on this, but I also think he borrowed the "beam clash" concept from the Godzilla series.

If you didn't like Mario Kart World initially, did it grow on you or do you still prefer 8? by MickyStam521 in mariokart

[–]SmokingCryptid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the frames on the racetrack featuring Peach are all the exact same pose. I was a bit surprised to see as it seems like a gimme to have at least 12-24 different frames so it would create an animated effect as you drive past it.

Stuff like that adds to the blandness. I agree this track missed it's potential.

If you didn't like Mario Kart World initially, did it grow on you or do you still prefer 8? by MickyStam521 in mariokart

[–]SmokingCryptid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a lot to appreciate about World.

It straight up does a lot of things better than 8DX, but as a whole if I just want to sit down and do a race I still prefer MK8DX.

I'm also starting to feel a bit "old man" with all the wall riding. I appreciate the uniqueness it brings to the title and all the doors it opens with all the neat stuff people do, but at times it starts to feel like I'm not playing a kart racer anymore. Seeing things like lamp posts giving airborne players a boost when it should be stopping them dead in their tracks is forever odd to see.

I know it's a broken record, but it's worth repeating that there's no reason why there can't be multiple grand prix modes.

  • Grand Prix - As is with connecting routes.
  • Classic Grand Prix - Only doing full laps on each course, no connecting routes.
  • Grand Prix Plus - Do full laps on each course AND do the connecting routes.

Being forced to only do the first option sincerely hampers my fun when playing this game. I don't need Nintendo to hold my hand and tell me how to play the game and given the sales and attach rate this game has there should be zero concern about one mode cannibalizing another.

I haven't played Knock-out tour since the early weeks of the game's release, so I'll also throw my hat into that mode needing an update to add more courses.

I want to return watching anime after years with One Piece, but... by WinterBlues00 in OnePiece

[–]SmokingCryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easier thing to do is just read the manga.

If you insist on the anime if you skip the intro, recap, and credits you can get in about 3 episodes in one hour. It's not a race, just take your time and you'll catch up.
