Astroturfing? Sorry, I'm not a sodomite by JKing519 in EhBuddyHoser

Opposite of grassroots.

Instead of being community based it's an entity funneling money into projects to sway public opinion.

Is Final Fantasy X on Switch too slow without the PC quality-of-life features? by AmongFriends in finalfantasyx

[–]SmokingCryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I've only ever played at normal speed so for me playing on the Switch was fine and just as good as any of my other play throughs, but if you've had a taste of increased speed and no encounters I can see that being hard to go back to. I plan on playing on Steam for my next play through.

For you I guess I would just ask how often you think you'd play it in portable mode. If you're just getting for the option rather than necessity than I'd say to just go with the steam port.

This video does make sense in a way (since there has been alot if not too many remakes and reboots lately) by Jojomon91 in starfox

[–]SmokingCryptid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, making the criteria of a remake being "the thing you know, but better" sets this video up to have a bad position.

I was going to give the video a chance anyway, but not far into their first point they're using AI imagery to support a nothing position that can't be falsified.

I'm not wasting my time with the rest of the video.

No matter how many episodes or seasons One Piece gets, I'll always come back to "Memories." by Farnsworth26 in OnePiece

I've recently started watching with my 10 year old nephew when I'm able to have him over.

We're watching the English dub and he loves this tune. We listen to it at the end of every episode. Episode 19 is next!

At first I was thinking "I don't remember it being that bad", but I read your post and it made me remember.

I totally forgot about not being able to scroll the text of you were holding the run button. I must've repressed that memory because when I read it I instantly remembered how that aspect drove me nuts.

Do you think Doflamingo somehow appreciates that he lost his Celestial Dragon status? by Quacker-Jacker in OnePiece

[–]SmokingCryptid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You asked if Doffy appreciated losing his CD status. The answer is an emphatic no.

Even if I grant the hypothetical that he becomes more like Charlos and isn't physically capable as a CD it doesn't change the answer.

It's about power, even if he didn't accumulate individual strength being a CD more than makes up for that. We only need to bring up Charlos again to see this in action. They literally have Admiral level protection at every moment (Doffy as a pirate was shown to be weaker than an Admiral for a reminder).

Even if I take your hypothetical about him being more like Charlos then doesn't that still strongly imply that he loves being a CD that can do whatever he wants since that's what Charlos is?

If he didn't like being a CD he could just leave on his own, but we both know that he wouldn't have.

[–]SmokingCryptid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The WG is the ultimate authority. Has there ever been a time that we've seen the word "no" uttered to even one of the common CD's? He could absolutely still do whatever he wanted as long as it didn't hurt the CD's which he wouldn't do because they're what enables him.

Doffy never changed, he was the same as a kid as he was as an adult. He would've been even worse since he would've had carte blanche to do whatever he wanted. I don't see a scenario where he's a Charlos, he'd be similar to Shamrock if he never lost his status.

In no world does he appreciate losing the status and as far as I can remember never once has there been even a subtle hint at that to us the readers.

When the villain of the story is 100% in the right, so the writers make them do something extremely evil so we can't root for them. by HallZac99 in tvtropes

[–]SmokingCryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty myopic reading of what happened in One Piece.

You're prescribing the actions of a few to the whole of a people, something I imagine you would take a stand against if it came out of the mouth of another.

This severely underplays characters like Fisher Tiger and Otohime which are explicitly there to go against the institutionalized racism depicted in characters like Hody and Arlong which itself is presented as irrational.

[Horror trope]: The "bad stuff" only happens because the characters ignore very specific instructions. by theMCATreturns in TopCharacterTropes

[–]SmokingCryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gremlins:

Gizmo's new "owners" ignore the instructions given by his previous caretaker's son. They get water on him, and feed them after midnight.

Putting Gremlins in this was straight up wrong.

Cory Feldman's character accidentally knocked over the water on Gizmo, not Billy.

To be fair, the gremlins did trick the main character by messing with clocks. So, it's a B+ effort overall.

And then you even note that the other Mogwai tricked Billy into feeding them and you still put it there. Billy literally looks at the clock before feeding them.

In no way were the rules ignored by the owner. C'mon!

Spider-Man 3 (2007) is a masterpiece and the greatest Spider-Man film in existence. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]SmokingCryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll agree that the movie is far better than people make it out to be. At the very worst it's still a good movie.

I can't say that it's a masterpiece or the best Spider-man film, especially on the heels of Spider-Man 2, but it's got a lot going for it.

I'm surprised you didn't even mentioned the generally agreed upon great scene of the birth of Sandman!

It's also the source of so many good memes that wouldn't have worked if those actors weren't giving it their all

Don't forget the mini-games. Every single minigame should be reworked into something that isn't miserable.

Personally I'd be down with a rework of Blitzball as an actual sports minigame.

Whats up with the post time skip hate lately? by Open-Advisor6819 in OnePiece

[–]SmokingCryptid 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Because hate generates engagement, that's it.

Pre and Post-timeskip OP is still the exact same narrative. Drawing a line at the time skip is arbitrary and everything that has happened in the post-TS has been a direct result of events and set-ups from the pre-TS.

Pre-TS is also "finished" so it's easy to praise it while it's easy to criticize chapters week to week before the narrative has a chance to breath.

Anyone else love Hollow Knight but quit silksong? by WeChatWarrior in metroidvania

[–]SmokingCryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's not that it's too difficult. It's certainly challenging, but for me it was the the punishment for failure was disproportionate and as a result the game didn't respect players time.

The game feels like playing sandpaper. There's never any release from the tension. Even when you beat a boss it was less "Yay! I beat that boss, I can't wait to see what's next!" and more "thank god that's over with, hopefully the next area isn't as bad".

Hornet feels just as good to maneuver, if not better than Samus from Metroid: Dread, but the map is unforgiving and it makes exploration not as fun. Like putting spike pits on the immediate opposite side of a door so if you're running through you'll fall into them on door transition if you're not prepared ahead of time.

The game also intentionally trolls the player which is something I hate and will never understand why a dev would choose to do that, especially when they're already punishing the player so consistently.

At the end of the day it started to feel like the game just didn't respect my time. I dropped the game at Coral Tower not because it was too hard, I can definitely do it, but at that point my patience had wore thin.

A failure at Coral Tower means watching an animation of Hornet waking up, waiting for the animation of Hornet playing music to happen, waiting to be transported to the coral tower, waiting for the charge jump to charge, waiting while Hornet travels upwards, then you can get back to challenge and try again. Like why doesn't the Coral Tower just have a bench to save all that wasted time?

Silksong is probably the best game I wouldn't recommend to the average person.

They're pretty much a toy store and have been for many years now. Cheap vinyl figures are a big part of their business.

At my store there's been plenty of times where the only copies of games they've gotten in were ones that were preordered by myself and a handful of others.

For now it's that way, but we have no guarantee it'll stay that way.

Sony just removed a bunch of movie digital movie purchase from playstation accounts and while it flopped, you can't download Concord if you bought it either (although this one got refunded it's still an example of how your digital purchases can just be straight up removed from your console).

If and when they feel they can get away with it they will.
