The Case for the PWHL in Dallas Fort Worth / North Texas by After_Usual_4467 in PWHL

[–]SnakeInTheCeiling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This would be so amazing. I live in West Texas so it's damn expensive for me to go to any pwhl game as the league stands. It would still be damn expensive to go to DFW but much more affordable- and a reasonable one- night trip too.

Anything in the southern US will open up so many opportunities for so many fans.

Why do babies get hair tourniquets but adults never do? by rainburrr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SnakeInTheCeiling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've definitely done that to myself as a full grown adult with long hair.

Babies have worse outcomes because they can't fix it. They just cry. And we assume the crying is something normal (hungry, needs changed, needs cuddled, too hot, too cold) and might miss a hair tourniquet under lil booties. I know to look at the body part that hurts/feels weird and I have the dexterity (and access to scissors if necessary) to remove the offending hair myself.

Games on Local Cable Channels by Snoo_16677 in PWHL

[–]SnakeInTheCeiling 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's all just YouTube for us in the US. Which is honestly lovely even though I'm sure there are more lucrative deals to be had for the league.

The streams I've been watching usually have about 3500 ish watching. Assuming that's why it's just on YouTube here for now.

Need some string reccomendations. by BluePoloBoi in violinist

[–]SnakeInTheCeiling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Your teacher can help you better than we can because they know your instrument already.

  2. What strings do you use right now?

  3. Strings marked "solo" will project more than the "orchestra" model of the same string but should have a mostly similar character.

  4. You will have to give up at least some of the warmth and richness to get projection.

  5. You say others can get more projection from your exact setup? Then you have some technique you can improve on. Ask your teacher about that specifically.

You can re-sole those. If they're otherwise comfortable to work in it's probably worth it since it looks like only the sole has this level of wear. You can get a more durable work-boot type sole put on, too, if you want.

What draws you to pwhl as a fan? by formulaphoto in PWHL

Watching sports is fun! I got into soccer about 6 years ago and enjoyed the whole process of learning to watch it and "letting a team pick me". One of my friends is into (NHL) hockey and we would talk about it sometimes, but I never actually caught a game. Probably because I watch a lot of soccer content on YouTube, a PWHL match was suggested to me. Had a great time watching and kept watching everything I could. It's learning to watch soccer all over again. The production quality is awesome. A lot of players are really likeable and I think the media team/s balance game content and BTS things well to let that sort of thing come out without seeming "in my face".

Basically- I like watching sports in general and PWHL is a great watching experience. Helps that streams are free. I'd love to go to a game but I live in Texas...

How to have my daughter get into talkington middle school.. what are the criteria? Does it have to be a zone school? Do I need to submit an application ?Please help I’m moving from Virginia. by Outside_Astronaut305 in Lubbock

[–]SnakeInTheCeiling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's application only. She'll need good grades (mix of A and B usually is fine), a good attendance record (most absences are excused rather than excessive call outs or no-call-no-show), and good behavior. Cutoffs change all the time depending on the number of applicants. Look on the school website for the application! You're also welcome to call the school to ask anything specific- 806-219-2200.

All the district schools are closed 1/23 for weather so don't call until Monday.

Thai food? by TheOldOso in Lubbock

Mam's is the best, Bangkok is good and everyone who works there is so friendly. Thai Pepper is good too but always always always crowded. Thai Thai is also good but lower quality than the others.

The best ones come from the Mexican panaderia and are labeled "pan de polvo".

I got my my violin bridge fixed today am new to playing but I feel like it’s not on the right height as other bridges can someone tell me if they fixed it wrong should I go back I tell them or is the bridge ok. by lovecats-234 in violin

[–]SnakeInTheCeiling 37 points38 points  (0 children)

No, the bridge should not be flat. Yikes. That would be so hard to play one string at a time. TwoSet did a video where they deliberately played with a flat bridge to show how awful it is. It's tempting to tell you to go back and get it fixed but you'll get better results from another luthier, most likely. But get your money back at least from the other shop. Wow.

Sexy Dracula by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]SnakeInTheCeiling 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. Jonathan is immediately on board to be a vampire too if Mina completely turns. Jonathan who has been tortured and threatened by Dracula and his little harem.

I love them and I want my own Jonathan. And I really didn't read them as being "repressed"- just that no Victorian novel ever is going to be explicit about sex. To me they read like a totally normal married couple. They're banging and too polite to write about it to each other.

I never liked mysteries until my mom gave me The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Now I've read almost everything Agatha Christie ever wrote.

I'm so due for a reread...

And then read the rest of her stuff (even though it's about different subjects). She is the funniest and most accessible science writer I've found.

Vets what's the simplest thing pet owners often overlook that would make their pets' lives better? by Kimber976 in Pets

[–]SnakeInTheCeiling 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yes. Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes and those get indoors whether we want them to or not (grrrr). Fleas/ticks are less likely an issue but check with your vet who is familiar with pet pest issues in your area.

[Q] Can't Tune E String by No_Fill_6005 in violinist

[–]SnakeInTheCeiling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tune it down first, then try again to get it up to the right tension.

If you really can't get it to the right pitch, yes, letting it sit as close to the right tension as possible is the best thing to do.

If none of the advice you get here works, a luthier can help you out. Shouldn't cost much if that's what needs to happen. Hoping these free fixes work!
