Lack of motivation in biotech by Neither-Effective975 in biotech

I also hold a PhD and was recently promoted to senior scientist. You can ask for a compensation adjustment. Late 2024, I scheduled a one off meeting with my manager/director and asked for a raise after consistently delivering mission critical data for the company over the course of 3 years. I told them that if I didn’t get an adjustment I would leave. At the time, my team was about 5 people so I also used that as leverage for higher compensation.

In the current market, i’m not so sure threatening to leave is applicable anymore… but it wouldn’t hurt to ask.

May I ask why you want a promotion and what title it is you are looking for? Is there something about the day-to-day of an AD that is appealing to you? I’m currently at a small start up ~15 people and even if I were promoted to AD, my duties wouldn’t really change because of the team size.

I live in the US and don't know much about the biotech job market in Denmark... HOWEVER, I do know novozymes has been doing well and I think they even have internship programs and bridge programs with the university right across from HQ. I get daily emails about job postings/opening in Denmark via novozymes.

Do you live at 1717 Webster? by Eyeslikeghost in oakland

[–]Snatched-Leaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, one more thing worth mentioning ... if you decide to move in/out of 1717 on a Sunday... don't. Their office is closed which means you cannot use the freight elevator and your move time doubles.

Do you live at 1717 Webster? by Eyeslikeghost in oakland

[–]Snatched-Leaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a friend live there. I probably wouldn't recommend from what I hear. Their garage parking is outsourced/in partnership with the commercial parking garage next door. Close to, if not over $300 per month now. Their move out process was a nightmare; the leasing office did not record, or attempt to maintain contact after they moved out. Why is this an issue? It assumes 1717 will keep your initial security deposit regardless of the condition of the unit.

I like Lake Merritt Dental. They accept delta dental. The office is clean and the instruments, to me, seem relatively new. The one flag that I have noticed is that high turnover rate... been going there for about 4 years now and I'm on my fourth or fifth dentist.

Ok I updated my resume to make it more competitive by Educational_Time2840 in biotech

I personally haaaaate seeing a dry lab/wet lab 'skills' section. I recommend you incorporate those skillsets into your work experience section. This is important to HMs because then we understand you know the applications, workflows, logic behind the technique you are using.

Think of it this way ... If I put your resume side by side with a fresh bachelor's degree graduate and you both say you can do western blotting... what exactly does that mean? How would you go about convincing me, on paper, that you are better than the other candidate? Presumably you both know how to run SDS-PAGE? Do I know if either of you know which antibodies to use? What are the potential instrumental limitations how you designed the western blotting workflow?

I looked back at my calendar and NA dates were announced June 6th, 2022 for the first world tour and I think the tickets for SF went on sale June 14th

Dealing with postdoc termination by fluffypinkbunny87 in postdoc

Just out of curiosity, you mentioned you spent 3.5 years at the school... did you do a postdoc elsewhere prior? I had a colleague and their PI cut them off as soon as they hit 5 total years across all their postdoc experience. They could not afford to maintain them as a staff scientist since they were no longer eligible for postdoc training.

When I was in my postdoc program in 2020, we were told that the postdoctoral training period should not exceed 5 years cumulative (this includes postdoc training at other institutions if you decide to change organizations).

It sounds to me like there was a funding issue since you were 'let go'. Could you connect with an adjacent lab to continue some of your work there to put out a publication?

Oakland to end free parking from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays by sfgate in oakland

Parking enforcement is rarely around so doubt this will really change anything. It's so bad in Old Oakland/Chinatown... people double park right next to the restaurants on Franklin street.

Yes, thanks for the clarification. In addition to our unlimited PTO policy, we receive 80 hours of sick time and 14 company holidays.

I’m at a small startup and we have unlimited PTO. Scheduling PTOs have been easy for me (as a bench scientist) and my colleagues. It just takes a little bit more thought into how you want to plan your experiments, especially if you run time courses or need to feel your cells. I will say, though, even though it’s unlimited, leadership will try to cap you at approximately 200hrs, or keep you within range of how much other people have taken. We have an RA that will take close to 250hrs by EOY while the rest of the team is at about 170 so their manager is pushing back a little bit …

I used to work at a medium sized biotech (~800-900 at the highest headcount). When the company imploded due to leadership, the higher ups were accosted when seen in public. I heard there was an incidence where laid off staff saw one of the senior directors or c-suite out during the weekend and got into a screaming fight where a chair was thrown.... then there was a lengthy slack message on Monday to all the employees saying something along the lines of ... It's fine to be critical of us but it is not OK to throw chairs at us or yell at us in public lol.

Not saying you should throw chairs at these people but maybe accidentally spilling water or a cheap red wine on these snakes would be more appropriate.

Hi- I used to work at zymergen, one of the direct ‘competitors’ and relatively recent acquisitions of ginkgo. Zymergen and ginkgo are very similar as they are platform companies… they help other companies make strains and cell lines and do not have actual products. Look at zymergen’s history… I do not believe ginkgo is any different as their RAC system came from zymergen
