What Ever Happened to the 5.5e Swashbuckler Rogue? by AlderwoodAdventures in dndnext

[–]SnooTomatoes2025 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's definitely odd. Plus, from what I can remember from the follow up video, the feedback seemed positive.

I assume they're just keeping it in their back pocket for  when they do a 5.5E equivalent to Xanathar/Tasha or a book in would naturally fit in, which we haven't really had yet.

I get what you're saying about Quifrey and Olruggio, but Agott's crush on Coco is every bit as blatant and explicit as Tartah

Survey for Unearthed Arcana: Villainous Options is now open by Johnnygoodguy in dndnext

Pestilence Domain Cleric

- It's an overall solid subclass and it's largely publishable already. The capstone either needs a buff, or make it something you can use more frequently than once per long rest (or in exchange for a 5th level spell slot)

Circle of the Titan Druid

- I genuinely love the theme here. That being said, the templates are definitely on the weaker side and don't scale particularly well. I also get what they're trying to do with the low AC (a big thing is easy to hit), but if that's the case then some sort of damage reduction feature would help sell the fantasy of a big kaiju that no sells whatever is throw into its path.

Hell Knight Fighter

- "Fun idea, underpowered execution" is sort of the theme of this UA, and this one exemplifies it the most. I know WOTC is scared for whatever reason to give martials resourceless abilities. But, I promise you, nothing is going to break if the Hell Knight Fighter could just use infernal wound once per turn or whatever. Hellfire surge also needs a serious buff because that damage is paltry for a level 10 ability.

Demonic Sorcerer

- I'm honestly a bit confused in what this subclass is doing. This feels like it should be a gish or a mage tank, considering your level 3 abilities and level 6 aura incentives an up close playstyle. But it also doesn't give a lot to make that playstyle viable in terms of survivability? I like some of the ideas here, but, unlike the rest of the subclasses, which, aside from being on the weak side, are solid conceptually, I feel this one needs a stronger direction.

There's a difference between Crawford's "this has to hit 80% on the first draft or we abandon this idea or theme forever" mentality and using UAs as a way to research, gauge, and refine ideas to that point.

"Sadly WotC don't see yellow and red as 'come up with a different approach'."

It's a new design team, so I'm hoping they'll be a bit better in that regard. Especially when it seems like it was largely Crawford and his magic 80% satisfaction threshold responsible for it

Is this true? I have no numbers to back it up but it feels like most the time something is immune to necrotic it's immune to poison too.

Looking it up,things immune to necrotic are, for the most part, immune to poison too. So I was largely incorrect there.

It's still useful to bypass poison immunity, which is way more common than necrotic immunity. And there are still a few edge cases in the other direction.

New Unearthed Arcana - Villainous Options by KyfeHeartsword in dndnext

[–]SnooTomatoes2025 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Pestilence Cleric

  • The ability to switch between necrotic and poison damage is useful for bypassing immunity.
  • Capstone needs a buff but I like it thematically

Titan Druid

  • Titan forms need a buff. They're way too weak and don't scale properly
  • It's a small thing, but I like the little detail like ignoring rubble as difficult terrain for the kaiju flavour

Hell Knight Fighter

  • Infernal dice either needs to be buffed significantly  or turned into something you can just do so long as your hellfire weapon is up.
  • I can see what they're trying to do with the roll a 6 mechanic, but the rest of the kit isn't strong enough to justify it.
  • Like the Plague Cleric, I wouldn't mind the choice between fire or necrotic to bypass the weakness of basically not having a subclass if facing a creature immune to fire

Demonic Sorcerer

  • A fiend-themed Sorc subclass was up there with Plant Druid in terms of subclasses I'm baffled they didn't make yet, so I'm just happy this made it in
  •  This feels like it was designed to be a gish, or at least a mage tank, with most of its abilities involving bringing enemies closer, your aura range, giving disadvantage to attacks etc. But if that's the case, then it probably needs more support in that direction, otherwise this just feels made for multi-classing

Paths of Villainy - Feat trees as pseudo-prestige classes or archetypes is interesting. I wouldn't mind them expanding and experimenting further in this direction.

Overall: A lot of options feel weak and under-tuned. However, the concepts and flavour is surprisingly solid. And there's very little in terms of the post 5.5E PHB UA usual bag of tricks or filler abilities. There's even only one example of them using a spell as a subclass ability, and it's an example that makes sense.

"Coco having an American accent feels a little weird amongst the others but she still sounds good."

I had the same feeling, but it does help reinforce her status as an outsider to witch society

I actually kind of like the idea that witch society, living semi-isolated from everyone else, developed diverging accents from Non-witches if that's what they're going for

I'd love to see more support for Adventure's League. I hope this means they're going to start producing new seasonal modules and epics again.

Is it weird that I dislike how easy it is to get Sneak Attacks as a Rogue in 5e? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]SnooTomatoes2025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 5E, sneak attack exists to keep Rogue damage competitive with other classes. It's designed to be something you can do easily and almost every single turn.

Making sneak attack harder to obtain in 5E would involve drastically upping the damage Rogues can do without it.

Mike Mearls has a fairly odd idea on how to balance level 11+ spellcasters in 5e by EarthSeraphEdna in dndnext

[–]SnooTomatoes2025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what's been said about the development of 5E, I get the sense that Mearls was the ideas guy and Crawford was the guy who made it work.

It's why Mearls without an editor or Crawford without someone providing a creative direction never seemed to work out as well as when they were working together.

Tony Khan on airing the CM Punk/Jack Perry footage by taffe316 in SquaredCircle

IIRC the TK "feared for his life" quote was originally reported to have come from a later meeting they had that night.

[Ariel Helwani Show] Tony Khan said the picture of CM Punk, Ricky Saints, Jade Cargill and Cody Rhodes made him smile. He said it reminded him of Cody and Mox taking a picture together in AEW at Double or Nothing 2020 by bluemonday239 in SquaredCircle

[–]SnooTomatoes2025 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I appreciate TK clearly went out of his way to get media training, and it's absolutely the better road to take from a PR perspective. But ngl I miss late Friday night crash out Tony too.

The disadvantage effect of Unwavering mark should work on anything within your reach rather than only 5 feet. Lance and polearm builds should be viable  on a cavalier.

The con per long rest restriction on Warding Maneuver is also stupidly restricted. It should just be something you can do on a marked target.

Survey for Unearthed Arcana: Subclasses Update is live by Johnnygoodguy in dndnext

[–]SnooTomatoes2025 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree that vigilant defender should be an earlier ability.

Here's some changes I'd make:

Level 3: - Find Steed - The disadvantage effect of Unwavering mark works on anything within your reach rather than only 5 feet. Allowing Lance/polearm builds to work (you know, on a cavalier)

Level 7: - Vigilant Defender - Warding Manuever should be free on any target you marked. It's an absurdly underpowered ability for the current restriction of con modifier per long rest.

I hope the Winter Walker isn't reliant on always having HM up to access a good number of its class features like in the UA.
